My grandparents had this exact type ... I have it now. Use it occasionally on Sterno / camping stove ... usually in hurricane chases now. My grandfather was pissed back in 1981 and nearly threw it. Luckily he didn't, just poured it gracefully in his "rage" :)

Inside the nearly calm eye of hurricane Nicole in Bermuda ... Their weather service launches a weather balloon in the eye. You don't get to do this often (from the ground) outside of aircraft dropwindsondes!

Note that all too familiar eerie fog in the air. I see this alot in the eyes of hurricanes (from sinking air). The famous stadium shots you see in aircraft pictures are from above this low cloud layer. Sometimes you get lucky and these low clouds break and you can see the eyewall.Updated Oct 16, 2016, 4:13 PM

Well it's been about a month or so since I wrapped up the Chicago job and I've been taking it easy here at my dad's place in Florida. But im wondering sometimes "what I'm really doing here"?

All my greatest and best friends are either in California, New York, or Illinois ... But not here close to me. Many are now married or continuing life in a good way.

Sometimes I feel as if I went "backwards" in a sense.

I was counting on moving out to Cali, but the cheap rental I was promised turned out to fall through. I still can go, but I'll get absolutely KILLED wirh rent.

Funny that the head hunters nagging the hell out of me 3 months straight "magically stopped" doing so AS SOON as I was unemployed.

As for unemployment, which was deduced out of my paycheck each week, was denied by both FL and IL (but they still made me claim all my weeks and paperwork for nothing) - Luckily I was smart enough to PUT MONEY AWAY before heading for new work soon!

I'm OK I guess, got to chase a bit and see the hurricanes. Just I feel very lonely here and wish I had someone here I can embrace...

Hey George, not as bad, but American pulled this on me back in 2009 and I missed most of the ChaserCon because of it.

Flight was full and ready to go (screaming babies and oversold flight) then hydraulic leak cancels it. The NEXT day, our "replacement plane" is being towed from the gate and KLUNK! Tow bar jams and bends the nose wheel.

Late in the day, I get into ChaserCon finally on a third plane in time to see video night, get some sleep, and fly back the next morning.

...AND paid $100 for the (rebooked) car rental for 1 day instead of $40 for the original 2 days!

Posted: Oct 13, 2016, 9:29 AM

The radar image is skewed a bit SW of the visible eye on satellite. This indicates the start of tilting of the storm core and onset of wind shear. Note the radar image shows a break in the eyewall to the SW.

Looks like the eye has passed and winds have shifted 180 degrees. Nice data log from Bermuda weather service! Also notice the warm core effect (80 deg in eye with lightest winds and 963 mb) :)Place: Bermuda (32.299, -64.7599)

Near the pressure centre of the eye. Awesome.

Posted: Oct 13, 2016, 8:51 AM

Notice that on the satellite, the eye is displaced far northeast of where the radar image is at that time. This is the start of some shear and tilting of the vertical structure of the core region of the hurricane. If you were inside the eye in Bermuda, most likely you would not see a "stadium" effect. Just lighter winds and brightening of the sky. Also note in the radar image that Bermuda is on the left side of the eye and the eyewall is open to the south and west.Place: L.F. significant southwest to northeast tilt between the low-level
center as noted between the radar and satellite presentations
of the eye, and the Air Force center fix that was located near the
extreme western part of the eye seen in satellite imagery.

Chris Collura commented on Margie Kieper's post.

Bermuda is actually lucky, and getting pretty much what Florida got with Matthew as the dangerous right side passed just east of them. The calm eye appears to be clipping the island now with winds at the airport dropping below 25 MPH. Before they had a gust of 104.

Wade Airport (11:44 AST) now reporting ENE at 21 MPH (G 33) with 962 mb pressure. Getting into the eye. Still overcast though.

Chris Collura replied to Charles Edwards's comment.

Two things ... The visible eye (from above) is becoming displaced to the east by the start of some shear, or the satellite graphic overlay is off by some distance. The radar imagery is what we need to go by, as that shows the surface eye structure, and more accurately the eyewall.

As of 10 AM EDT (11 AM AST) this morning, Nicole's eye collapsed and just missed Bermuda by a bit, putting the island on the weaker LEFT (western) side of the storm core. The satellite shows a "tilted" and smaller eye (shear maybe starting) and SE of the island. Based on the radar, however, the western edge of the eye itself appears to be over part of the island.

Hey Dave Lewison ... that would have been an option, since I have free points on SWA, could have flown there to JFK, then to BDA for the cheaper fares and avoid ATL altogether. But I realized that late last night, so that wasn't an option anymore.

Same here ... Until you check the price of tickets :)

In Igor back in 2010 prices were $360 to $450 ... Had I found those. I would be there.

Dropping anywhere from $1,100 to $1,600 on airfare alone, and still looking as if the storm may veer off (going by last nights info to make that decision) it didn't seem like a good gamble.

Oh, and once you get there, a hamburger is $25 and accomidations are like $300 a night (and UP)!

Stupidity and irresponsibility IN the family (and I thought I was bad).

All six gas cans were missing the spout / nozzles. Since that forms the seal when capping (spout goes where the yellow plug is through the black ring of the cap, with the nozzle inside for transport).

So filling up the cans, gas leaks everywhere through the cap (cuz the nozzle ain't there). I my dad where he put the nozzles when I gave him the cans a few years back...

"Oh, I use a funnel now, so I threw those all away".

...Okay, meanwhile he fills his up and gas is leaking all over the garage.

I spent hours trying to tape up the seal on the cans. Imagine the temper?

Now the focus changes gears from tornado to hurricane chasing. Never did both of those chasing "genres" in only a few days apart. Flying back to FL Wednesday to chase Matthew (anywhere from FL to NC)!

Very similar scenario up here in Wichita

This what I'm afraid of here. Stick with the primary target.

I'm sitting tight right here in Wellington, KS (just north of OK / KS border and I 35). Waiting to see how this will unfold. Either play tail end of line or blast south again. Still plenty of time.

Looks like an interesting day...

Well this week is going from nothing to crazy after quick business trip up north! Basically landed in Fort Lauderdale this afternoon, only to rush back to my place and pick up some gear, and fly out in the evening to Dallas for the tornado setup in OK or KS tomorrow. Late Wednesday I'm back in Florida (or SE coast) to deal with hurricane Matthew!

Good luck to those who are chasing in the Caribbean or Bahamas!

Now can I catch a tornado tomorrow AND a hurricane within the same week? Is anyone else chasing BOTH of these?

Damn ... I'm flying out for tomorrow's setup! I'll pass you at 35k feet I guess!

Then I'm back late Wednesday to deal with Matthew.

I think Joseph Barton Comstock is there, Josh Morgerman. I'm in Canada now on business and almost cut the trip short to go there. Glad I didn't after seeing the east trending, which should continue.

With the Atlantic trends the past decade, I suspect the more right eastern model solution (troughing "wins" more). I feel bad for those chasers who went to Jamaica, which ain't a safe place even without a big storm.

Hey Krissy Heishman. You got that right. And for hurricanes, many hit Cuba as a major hurricane, only to hit the USA as a minimal tropical storm. And we couldn't go, thanks to "politics" :(

Yeah, same here. Thinking Bahamas. Not sure if us Americans can easily go to Cuba yet.

That's right! Damn too bad you didn't get that all on video!

Are you heading there, George Kourounis?

Jealous! But be careful there, Jim Leonard and George Kourounis literally got mugged there in 2007. The storm is the least of your worries.
