That movie was total junk science. They mentioned the air was "descending too rapidly" and that the temp was -150 deg F. Even if it didn't warm up - The coldest part of the stratosphere is usually -80 deg. Hollywood :-)

Happy Thanksgiving to all ... Don't even think about Christmas or shopping for unrealistic discounts UNTIL tomorrow when you're all free to push, shove, or even stab your way through the crowds!

Enjoy friends and family, all the ones you love, and most of all be thankful for all we got. And most importantly just stop and appreciate those who don't.

Then eat well today and "exercise it all away" busting down the mall doors tomorrow!

Good move. I actually stayed a bit too long on a beautiful LP northeast of Wichita before I bailed on that, blasted north, and encountering the supercell and on going wedge as it crossed I 70 and went (thankfully) south of Chapman.

Seeing the storm 75 miles away I thought I would never make it. But the longevity of that tornado proved me wrong (in a good way)!

People like you remember family and thanksgiving and not rushing out to the store on Black Friday (or NOW the day before that day) to trample, stab, and punch their way to a discount or scam. Good for you!!!!

Thanksgiving is for quality time with friends and family. Christmas shopping can wait a day or two.

That looks like a Cessna 195 and there are still a few flying around.

I used to skydive out of two of them in the mid to late 90s in Florida. Both were retired after a prop strike (ditched and too costly to fix) on taxi.

There are some of these planes still around but I'm not sure about lessons in them. The Cessna 195 though is a 1945 plane with 9 cylinder radial. So that's your best bet.

Wow, Josh Morgerman, 215 MPH is just incredible. I think peak gusts are 30 to 50 percent above the sustained winds in weaker systems. I wonder what the peak gusts were in these (Patricia or Haiyan)? Wow... maybe 300 MPH? Who knows.

Posted: Nov 18, 2016, 9:29 AM

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Thanks Douglas, the tornadoes also are extremely turbulent and choppy winds (kinda like a hammer drill versus a regular one). And the upward motion in tornadoes is there. Tornado peak winds are measured by 3 second peak gust, not one minute sustained winds. Just scary comparing similar wind speeds. Also there's mini swirls in the eyewall that might mimic tornado damage in extreme cases.

The last official chase day for 2016 was Oct 7 in Kansas. That's it. That was our fall season. Winter is coming and folks up north will be facing a cold (but dry winter) thanks to La Niña. Spring 2017 will be pretty active come the April to June time frame. I'm up for some clear air turbulence (CAT)...Place: Geographic Center of the United States (44.674102545393, -103.85300601152) Address: 415 5th Ave, Belle Fourche, South Dakota 57717

There is an issue since the glow stick (Luminol and Hydrogen Peroxide) is water based and won't mix with the ferro fluid (that's iron suspended in oil). This is why the magnet makes the center dark and glows on the edges. The two won't mix redily.

I've seen this video (from trucker). From the outside it looks like an ordinary thunderstorm / bowing line segment. But upon penetrating nearly all 100% daylight is attenuated and you barely see the edge of the tornado before he's rolled. This was rain wrapped and there was near complete darkness in there. Wow.

Yes the season ends Nov 30. This will be strong but probably no where to chase it down there (mosquito coast, and small fishing camps accessible mostly by canoe). If it gets pulled north the shear should destroy it.

Chris Collura commented on Lindsey Fowler's post.

Tides in the ocean are also large ranged (king tides) during the perigean moon in Oct and Nov. It's plausible that the slightly higher tidal effects can trigger earthquakes (yes, the earth's crust is floating on semi molten rock and flexes with gravity)!

Looks like power flashes (instead of wind blowing powerlines down or against each other, they're being shaken. Similar effect.

A far more fetched theory if no powerlines are around is piezoelectricity where rocks (usually quartz, flint, or granite) fracturing create large sparks.

Warning! If you get a link on FB or message with 5 free AMC movie tickets ... Just ignore it!There's a fake thing going around where you have to take a quick survey, share a hash tag on FB, and "step 2" where you have to share the movie link with 15 or more friends (in order to retrieve your free tickets).Step 2 does the 15+ shares, ofcourse, but you cannot get past that step (says "verifying" and gets stuck).I apologize about this as I accidentally tried step 2 and it looks like I made about 15 people quite upset.
