As I mentioned before many times - With little or no recognition - The foolishness of people caused this spread to get out of hand when it could have been contained.

Back in late March of 2020 ... I stayed home for a full 3 weeks as ordered (we had a curfew and stay at home order).

Towards early April, and stressed to the limit, I figured I'll take a drive to and along the beach (this was in S Florida). Just stay in the car and look at the ocean - knowing I would be the only one out.

I was appalled. The beach area was more packed than tourist season or Black Friday Christmas shopping! Traffic jammed with a line of cars waiting for a parking spot to open up. Sign put up saying "$25 for valet" since its "unusually busy". And these were not all young "spring break" teens nor kids. Everyone there were senior citizens!

Beach too was shoulder to shoulder. The beach restaurant, normally empty, was packed with long wait for table and also offering valet parking. way was I gonna go near all those people (I'm impatient, too cheap to pay for valet parking, and hate crowds anyways).

After tearing my hair out just to get off that jammed road (I never parked and just left), I came across two old guys fist fighting over a parking spot he was "holding" ... WTF?

To no surprise, esp after me probably being the ONLY person who listened and stayed home - I watched the cases in Florida go through the roof in May and June. Making NY and Italy look like nothing.

Hey, you named it, you claimed it.

I've seen these folks first hand. Stubborn. Arrogant. Thinking their the "best". There ARE some millennials that CAN get sick from Covid-19. Contrary to what many think.

Lori Ferguson, that is correct ... Not just young people doing this foolishness and I reiterate that I saw that first hand back in late March / early April in S Florida.

There was a curfew and stay at home order. Stressed and having finished picking up canned goods in case I stay home for 2 or 3 weeks I figure "let me drive by the beach since it would be empty" with no intent to walk outside there ... Basically a "Christmas shopping" Black Friday "type" scene there. And these were NOT spring break people. They were all seniors. The restaurant along the beach was open and jam packed = WORSE than tourist season over the holidays!!!

It was so busy the parking was like three or four cars in front of you waiting for a spot to open up. They even had valet for $25. I've NEVER seen that in Deerfield Beach. I literally tore my hair out trying to get out of the traffic, even closing the windows and vents on my car. At the end an old man was holding a parking spot by standing in it. Another guy confronted him and there was a fist fight. I was absolutely appalled by this, and not surprised south Florida was #1 in cases and deaths through June.

That same day, I drove north away from the crowds in Deerfield Beach through Palm Beach, which looked empty and WAS being enforced. I was pulled over there for driving on A1A and almost got a $500 fine - I wasn't gonna walk on any beach, just drive past, looked at Boynton inlet, and he just told me to go home. I jokingly told him to go to Deerfield Beach but he didn't think it was funny :(

Since people without common sense are going out and forming crowds despite lock downs and curfews ... I will not set foot inside a store from Black Friday until Christmas. We all should do the same. I'll do all my shopping next week or online and not dealing with crowds and their germs. Let's all do this.

We are charging "valet parking" today since we are so "unusually busy" and there is a "2 hour wait" for a table. This was in Florida in late March - Evading a curfew and stay at home order. So yeah, Darwin will clean up the idiots in all cases.

What really sucks even more that instead of looking amazing, many people treated Larry like crap after this. And he eventually committed suicide. Its a sad story, and kinda "Face-Bookey" if you think about how he was treated. When I heard about this guy in the early 80s as a kid, it inspired me to get into aviation (I'm a skydiver now). Go figure :)

With a storm like this - And having experience with the cores of such violent systems (like Josh) - The really violent winds are in a narrow ring straddling the inner "surface" of the eye. If hurricane forced winds extend 45 miles from the center, going from that 45 miles to about 15 miles from the center, one will experience only 75 to 100 MPH winds (for a cat 5 storm). Once you are 10 to 15 miles from the center, that's where all "Hell" breaks loose meteorologically. The 150 to 200 MPH gusts and flying debris would be seen when the rain lets up and sky brightens just before getting into the calm eye. 95% of the kinetic energy of the storm is in this narrow "ring of wind hell". In hurricane Michael (FL Panhandle in Oct 2018), this inner ring of violent winds went by like a bomb, disintegrating structures and collapsing the hotel portico. I seen a similar wind structure in Josh's video from Dorian last year (Sept 2019 in Abaco Bahamas). Hopefully this "wind ring of hell" will miss Puerto Cabezas. Plus all that at night, in darkness. Crazy.

Hopefully this will go south of Puerto Cabezas where there is not much population. Being on the outer edge of the eyewall vs the inner edge is the difference between 100 MPH and 200 MPH gusts. Remember wind force is "area * rho * velocity - squared" :(

I had air tickets from LA to Florida and they would up getting canceled so unfortunately I could not make this one.

I think S Florida will escape hurricane conditions though, outside of some 65 mph gusts in the keys (in total darkness). Not a really "chaseable system" per se.

I was watching this and even had air tickets flying in today (they were canceled). The strongest this will be is a minimal subtropical hurricane and the center (not an eye) will cross south of the FL keys tonight. Anywhere north of the system should see strong winds (~50 mph with higher gusts).

You know whats really super annoying? Going into this FB app, seeing a really interesting post - Then I exit few secs to take a call or handle a message - And go back into FB and the post I was reading is gone, and other posts from last week are in its place! Arrrgh!!!

The only way to "revive" the post is if you happen to note the poster (such as iCyclone or a friend) and go to their page to see it when you come back into FB. If not, its gone forever. Another way FB fosters more anger in its community?

Basically like a bullet "missing" the major "organs". Plus its tiny and being just 20 miles from the center would put you only in only minimal hurricane conditions. The violent 160+ mph gusts will be on the inner edge of the eyewall and almost in the eye.

Not many places to go there though. Small fishing villages accessible by canoe / mosquito coast don't count much as a good place to observe such a storm (no parking garages there).

Ryan James Haynie Crazy. And at one point, I think near Haines city to the SE, all 3 storms crossed points there (Charley, then Frances, then Jeanne). These "micro canes" can pack a tight punch. Like a tornado in a sense.

Crazy hurricane season to say the least. Can't chase this but I hope this comes in at a sparsely populated area. Flash flooding will be a major problem after landfall.Then after this storm (hurricane Eta, the 29th storm of this crazy hurricane season), some long range models show another storm developing off the same monsoon trough / gyre and affecting the Gulf and even Florida next week.

Eta is quite impressive and rapidly intensifying. That area is known as the "mosquito coast" and is basically mangrove and jungle dotted with small villages accessible mainly by canoe. Definitely not a place to chase let alone negotiate storm surge. Central America is probably locked down too with the pandemic.

Yeah I have to help my own dad financially from time to time because of gambling (mainly horse racing). It's really sad and I am happy I avoid it altogether, rarely even play the scratch off lottery. It sucks when you have to deal with family members doing it and it falling on your shoulders.

Raymond Skinner Haiyan has a central pressure of 895 mb at landfall with similar 195 mph winds. Sub 900 mb storms are extremely rare.

Dave Lewison Well said. Sorry to hear this was a rough time. When I headed out I would just be by myself in the car and staying at a hotel nearly completely empty. No steak dinners nor gatherings, wave at other chasers from across route 183, no restaurants, canned goods and drinks, mask and gloves getting gas. Statistically safer than a sterile doctors office.

But the effects of social media this year especially (not just from storm chasing but about politics and the pandemic) drove me crazy and sad too.

Then very angry when I was in Florida in March - With both a lockdown and stay at home order. Yet restaurants were jammed, traffic everywhere, no one at skydive place wearing masks, and the "black Friday like" parking at the beach so busy they were charging valet there. And these were NOT the spring break crowd either, they were all old people. I saw two fist fighting over parking too. I was disgusted seeing this. And angry too. I avoided these places and stayed home. Sure enough, look what happened in Florida afterwards with Covid-19 :(

Then on social media, back and forth everyone went about chasing during a pandemic, politics, masks, etc ... With only me mentioning the jammed venues / no parking in Florida (I think if I went to the beach that day in March with those crowds it would be more risky than going to the big Texan - Had it been open - in May)!
