Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on David Gold's photo.

876 mb is almost a 140 mb pressure "deficit" from normal sea level pressure (~1013 mb).

About 1,000 feet altitude is roughly 33 mb, so, in the eye of this thing the pressure at sea level is equivalent to just over 4,000 foot altitude.

Imagine being in a plane at 4,000 feet and a cylinder of air, to your altitude, 20+ miles in diameter below you, just missing.

The altimeter in the eye of hurricane Laura in Lake Charles was barely 2,000 feet.

Imagine how many horsepower a fan or pump has to be to "maintain" that "void"?

I remember playing "dark seek" on Halloween in the early to mid 80s with you folks! Hide and go seek in the dark and we play tag in ghost / monster costume. Until my dad, more "stern" than the "back of a boat", ended that ;/

I cannot even imagine the raw sound of that coming in at the landfall point. Hopefully where it came in isn't populated much.

Its loud enough at 120+ knots (such as Laura) let alone 170+. I can imagine the storm surge and waves too. Jesus.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Ryan McGinnis's comment.

Ryan McGinnis Yeah as a matter of fact I have been chasing more and more low key and saving the detailed chase logs for my website and such. With just YouTube for videos to link to (non monetized either) strictly for storage.

Social media has made the world a highly unwelcoming and stressful place. Not just with storm chasing. That and an algorithm that hides (or, rarely, shows) your "epic" posts. In addition to being banned for no good reason, over a week last month.

Stepping back, I totally agree with the problem being with Social Media. I will really think about that hard. Storm chasing is just a hobby and never should have gotten to this point (amongst many other things).

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Jason Foster's comment.

Jason Foster I think and conventions or gatherings aren't a good idea until Covid-19 gets under control. That pandemic was another tough 2020 pill to get down and accept. Just this morning I heard 2 storm chasers had family members with the virus, one losing his mother this morning to it.

I won't digress anymore but gatherings will happen again once we all get through these tough times. I really feel horrible for those international storm chasers like Daniel Shaw and George Kourounis. They couldn't chase ANYTHING in the states here (George K not even Nova Scotia). Even folks in NY such as Scott M and Dave Lewison. That part really stinks.

Posted: Oct 31, 2020, 7:52 AM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Roger Edwards's comment.

Roger Edwards If I make any money from video its a complete surprise to me now. And the best part is that I do not expect to. I'm more in it to see storms and nature, not pay rent. I already have a good IT job for all the "adulting" work and life expenses.

This year was very stressful from the effects of Covid-19 and restrictions that caused me to be denied boarding on a flight to TX / OK for the Apr 22-24 tornado fest (probably best day of the year), then May and June being quietest in 50 years, and another great day (July 8 in MN). During May and June the "SPC hatched" setups did nothing while a big tornado would happen outside of a 2% area and / or at 11:30 AM instead of after 3 PM (ie. SE Iowa on May 23). It was a very challenging year forecast wise.

The hurricane season was quite better but I think many succeeded more from luck than anaccurate forecast - Especially with intensity.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on iCyclone's post.

Thanks for sharing this. Great work. The right side of this storm was bad due to the fast storm motion to the NE which is also probably why it didn't weaken (strong SW flow aloft + storm moving rapidly NE = storm "feels" no shear)!

Unfortunately I was not able to chase this one with work restraints (I actually had tickets to fly out but canceled them when some important work stuff came up besides most forecasts were barely showing a cat 1 at landfall).

I was really surprised what Zeta did. My target area had I gone was Grand Isle and slightly NW of there on that elevated causeway.

Why they do this outside of a presidential or VIP motorcade is beyond me.

Posted: Oct 30, 2020, 8:00 AM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Jason Foster's comment.

Jason Foster Thats a point.

Maybe because most skydivers are a tightly knit and highly social group. I never see the brutal competition and whose the best attitude with them.

Not only is it a highly predictable sport and easy fix (like going to a theme park) for excitement, but the fellow jumpers are so drama free and just cool.

A scant few storm chasers still exist that are really cool, most from before year 2000. Unfortunately lately in the days of social media this hobby has become like a shallow dating app on these platforms.

I miss the days of the old StormTrack (I still post reports on there) and even the WXChase lists. So I don't know.

Plus lately the weather patterns have become highly difficult to forecast lately (example in the central USA this year with many surprises events).

Storm chasing. A hobby? A passion? A curse?

You decide.

Besides all the gloom and doom (other than unpredictable forecasts) going on lately. My blood pressure has hit a record high, I see folks at each others throats about who's best, and all these Facebook posts (mostly political).

Oh my. Some folks would be "amazed" (in a crappy sense). Too bad no more chaser convention.

After yesterday (Zeta) I look down on storm chasing from a "hobby" perspective. Just causes a lot of friction and bickering.

Yeah. I'm being blatantly honest. But this year stressed this hobby (or job for some folks) to its seams. And God threw in a dangerous virus from China too. What a ride, ey?

I pray things improve in 2021 and we get through all this in one piece. Anyway, that's how I feel. Comment away as you wish. God loves us all.

What the hell? As soon as I commit to NOT chasing Zeta it rapidly intensifies overnight and NO SHEAR. Now I'll miss a category 2 (not a weak 1 as I thought). I'm ready for this hurricane season to just end and I can focus more on work and adulting.

Forecasting INTENSITY will be a challenge with these storms for a long time.

I'm not chasing this one BUT if I was I would target Grand Isle, Louisiana for an afternoon / evening landfall for tomorrow (Wed). That's your best bet for some good wind and surge.

Yucatan and Louisiana had it rough this year. Esp Louisiana taking the strongest storm of the year at maximum intensity (Laura). Reminds me of the Phillipines (same place hit multiple times) during a busy typhoon season, or Florida in 2004.

Posted: Oct 27, 2020, 4:14 PM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura updated his status.

Just FYI ... I'm NOT chasing Zeta. Probably a minimal hurricane at best as it makes landfall in Louisiana (unfortunately for them) tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon and evening. Busy with work and other things including finally getting a new windshield on the Jeep (as I put that off so so long).

Good luck to those headed out. Its 2020 and anything can happen (heck its snowing under the system adjacent to TS / hurricane Zeta!).

Posted: Oct 26, 2020, 4:31 PM

As we approach November ... The threat of a powerful hurricane in the Northern Gulf shall decrease. Cooler waters and wind shear are common this late in the hurricane season. We certainly won't get a "hurricane Michael" out of Zeta. But still, a strong tropical storm is the last thing Louisiana needs in 2020.

Another time on a dating app. Someone with great interest messages me. Again, I was driving. I reapond and she had "last online 2 mins ago" in her profile. I responded, only to never hear back and get blocked.

My neighbor gets dumped by his girlfriend for not being "responsive" in answering her texts RIGHT AWAY.

Is INSTANT RESPONSE really THAT "crucial"? Is it an encouragement to 'strive to respond' simply because someone is too damn impatient to wait for you to respond?

Tell all this BS to the friends and family of this poor girl, with her entire life ahead of her, taken by a distracted driver in a senseless and tragic accident.

Not only is texting / using phone while driving an issue, but also stop waiting for an INSTANT RESPONSE. People may be at work, in a meeting, or, uh umm - DRIVING. Please think about this.

NOT just the person texting or using the phone, but the person angry or impatient to wait for them to respond - thus fostering this behavior.

Put it down! And yes. It CAN WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Group: Skydive Perris Experienced Jumpers

Technically, 20k and up is considered "HALO" (high altitude) as per the SIMs (skydivers information manual). So the term "high altitude" is only relatively speaking. There are many drop zones around the USA that do 18k MSL (considered "medium altitude"), many of which are lower to sea level. Elsinore and Perris are 1,200 to 1,500 MSL and restricted due to LAX / SNA traffic. So 16k to 17k is all yer gonna get there (above the ground). There are a few events (Z Hills in FL, Tennessee, and Davis (CA) up north / Skydance) where they do 24k MSL and rarely 30k. Real "HALO" :)

In Houston, after chasing Delta, Derek Sibley and I were absolutely apalled by the line we saw getting into both IHOP and Dennys and this was BEFORE lunch time at 11 AM or so.

No separation whatsoever, packed shoulder to shoulder with folks ranging from screaming babies and kids to senior citizens. Many without masks and 6 INCHES apart. Oh, and a two hour wait to get a table (all were taken and none empty).

Enraged we just left and skipped lunch. And we "complain" because Covid-19 keeps spreading. Unfortunately most Americans are just down right stupid. I'm sorry.

I would up finding a Chinese place with no more than 10 people being allowed in at a time, in a place with a capacity of over 100. Spread far apart. Masks required. Sanitizer available, and wear gloves (supplied) to get food. Much better!

Back in March I saw a similar problem in S Florida with a stay at home order in place yet people were still out, and to the point where beach parking was so jammed they had the valet going. Sure enough - Look at S Florida. Yup. No surprise.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura is feeling excited.

Hurricane Delta is a powerful Hurricane with a tiny core and "pinhole" eye much like Wilma (Oct 2005) and Charley (Aug 2004). Its currently bearing down on the NE tip of the Yucatan in Mexico, and likely to cause devastation there (Cozumel and Cancun) during the morning hours of Oct 7 (Wed).

From there it will quickly cross the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula and enter the S Gulf of Mexico. By late Friday, it would be bearing down on Louisiana as a still powerful storm. The intensity at that point depends on many factors.

#ChasingHurricaneDelta

With passage over land, Delta might lose its tight core and widen substantially. Wilma did this in 2005. Such a transformation would make the storm less vulnerable to wind shear just before land fall when it reaches the Gulf Coast.

I did not chance going to Mexico for Delta (did not feel like quarantines nor taking off a week from work either), but cleared my schedule to fly into Houston late Thursday and head east from there for Friday. This will probably be my last hurricane chase for this year.

iCyclone Not only that but if the hurricane starts accelerating northeastwards under a SW flow aloft, the shear the storm "feels" will be much less. Kinda like jogging at a 90 degree angle into the wind and turning right 90 deg and TO YOU you are in dead calm (with the wind). Its called "storm relative shear".

This is what happened with Isaias and Sally as they blew up once they started moving northeastwards.

Also, a faster moving storm won't have much time over any cooler shelf waters either. Not good news for folks in LA hoping for a weaker storm.

I hope he does not get sick to the life threatening point, nor not get sick at all (the latter will cause him to never take it seriously again).

Maybe two weeks of pain and "Hell", followed by a slow recovery, will change his attitude, and he will believe this pandemic is real and not a hoax.

Like a speeding ticket. Its bad to be thrown in jail or get away with it with a light verbal warning. The "median" route where we pay big ticket, driving school, missed work, etc ... That seems to get us to not speed again. The "hard way" :)

I'm afraid of two things ... Trump succumbs to this, or he gets through it with mild or no symptoms.

The latter will make him even more "complacent" and down play the pandemic simply because he was one of the luckier ones.

Getting super sick and a costly / painful recovery (even a ventilator) should make him think more seriously about this pandemic.

Kinda like getting pulled over for speeding. The cop can arrest you or let you go with a verbal warning - BUT as an interim, a costly ticket, red tape, and driving school is how we "learn" (the hard way) to think twice.

Hate to say that but that's my opinion.
