My final minutes of 2020 were just full of heartaches emotionally. That is it. I'm going to bed and ain't waiting for any "ball" drop :[

You can take 2020 and go stick it.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura updated his status.

Year-End recap... long read (may require pop corn)...

The first couple of months of 2020 were very good. Started new job in Denver in late 2019 which was going well. Had friends visit me, travel was easy, and enjoyed the last ChaserCon in Denver on a warm super-bowl weekend!

By the mid to end of February I had this weird version of the flu, many called "flu B". I had mild flu in late 2019 and thought it was weird that I got it twice, esp after I got flu shots. The second bout of "whatever this was" had bad aches, fever (around 101), and weakness / major out of breath with coughing fits. I blamed the dizziness on the high elevation of Denver. I also remember chicken wings losing taste during this 2 week long "flu". I never imagined Covid-19 since it wasn't established yet. I never tested for antibodys either.

Then early March came. Feeling much better but still with cough - Did skydiving in Longmont, flew aerobatics with pilot Dagmar Kress in Centennial, and on that following week, watch the stock market falter and more and more Covid-19 cases spread. We (IT contractors) were laid off. After that, I left Colorado and headed back to my dad's place in Florida.

Over March and into early April, I filed for unemployment, which my company endorsed as being fully "eligible" for. After going back and forth with a dysfunctional and broken FL DEA system, getting "denied as ineligible" 5 claims in a row - I finally got the measly tail end of that, and NOT because of the Denver job layoff. I'll get to that later.

March the curfews and lock downs started. Friends stopped hanging out. Stores closed. Concerts and events were canceled. I followed guidelines in late March / early April and stayed home for almost 3 weeks. Going out once for a doctor appointment / pick up medicines, and the latter to go to the beach (locked in my car, by myself, just to drive past and see how big the waves were, then go home - figuring no one would be out).

I was appalled. I got stuck in horrendous traffic just getting near the beach. It was like a mall on black Friday. 4 cars waiting for parking spot to open up, one car leave, and a huge sign saying "Valet is $25 - Since it's unusually busy". Looking at the beachfront restaurant, a line of senior citizens waiting 2+ hours for a table, tables jammed and almost no masks in sight. No young teens either on spring break, all older people. At the end I saw two old men fighting over a parking spot he was "holding" by standing in it.

I went home - sad, stressed from the traffic, and a new level of disgust (after all, a stay at home order was in place, and I was probably the ONLY one who followed it). After that, and to no surprise, Covid-19 exploded. Italy was brought to its knees, NYC was a hot zone, and Florida began seeing a surge. By mid to late April, barber shops in FL closed after I was unable to cut my hair since those places too, like the beachfront, were jammed. Fortunately I hate crowds and am too impatient to wait - Probably a good thing.

By the end of April I started preparing my vehicle for storm chasing. Planning on heading out by the end of the month, early May or so. April 22 came, with the best setup of the year. I had free flights using points, and car rentals in TX or OKC were like $15 a day. I get to airport on Apr 21 and I'm told I cannot go, and from FL I would have to quarantine for 14 days. I missed that event, and was devastated. Then came Apr 24, more photogenic tornadoes in NE Texas, salt in a wound.

Finally I decided to drive out, and targeted a moderate risk in NE Oklahoma for around Apr 28. Unlike the 22, despite high hopes, the 15% hatched SPC area only produced a marginally severe squall line with cold outflow. Then came the remarks on Facebook to my "MDT risk - let's do this" post on Apr 28. Hearing "why are you out there during a pandenic?", "you are chasing THAT crap?", etc. I got so distraught that I deleted my FB completely and made another profile, not re-friending many folks.

I was able to do some storm chasing, but May and June 2020 was the quietest storm season since 1970. Saw lots of shelf clouds, that's for sure. At least there were a couple of good days in there, as well as frustrating days, like May 23 in Iowa where I got on the tornadoes too late - Since they all formed at 11:30 AM, right, Brian Stertz?

Other than that, and despite personal attacks about "my foolishness" on social media, I managed to avoid crowds. Take out only. No eating in groups. Go to isolated hotel (most were barely anyone in them), use gloves and mask, esp when getting gas. Hotels also had no free breakfast, no coffee, pool closed, yet still charged same prices. It wasn't easy. During off time I would spend time at a friend's place who I worked with in Chicago.

By the end of the chase season, I filed for 1099 unemployment under PUA, for gig jobs. They kept denying my fully eligible Denver job I was laid off from, so I never got the $600 a week. But when I claimed missing the storm setups, esp Apr 22, as I sometimes do video work for Doug Kiesling, I was awarded, finally, $125 a week of unemployment starting around the beginning of July.

By the first week in July, I needed to fly to Florida to handle family and medical stuff. Low and behold, July 8, one of the best tornadoes of the year happens in Minnesota. Why just that week. Why? Cuz it's 2020. After that, I returned to chasing, catching a few marginal storms, and making the drive to California - It was the same distance from the central USA to FL or CA anyways. And, to no surprise, Florida then was the number 1 hot spot for Covid-19 in the USA!

By late August / September things for me vegan to turn around. With the tornado season being lack luster, the hurricane chasing was a totally different story. I started out chasing cat-4+ Laura in Louisiana, probably the best tropical storm chaseable of the season. That same week the company, ETrade, in Denver called me with a start date in early September - This time all remote. No traveling, no hotels, work anywhere from a laptop they sent me - And at the same pay rate.

Pretty much for the rest of the year I stayed healthy, avoided crowds, only went out when I needed too, and limited chasing too much (some weaker hurricanes like Isaias and Sally I didn't bother). I worked (remotely) out of a small place I am renting from in Orange County, and avoiding Los Angeles, about 30 miles away.

The last hurricane I chased was Delta, also in Louisiana, with Derek Sibley. After chasing Delta and back in Houston, we were again appalled by how many people were jamming a Dennys and IHOP, at only 11am on a Saturday. Again, like in FL, no masks and people waiting for a table 6 inches (not 6 feet) apart. Contrary to it all, I left and went to a Chinese buffet. Only 10 people were allowed in at a time, given plastic silverware, and gloves - Seated separately in a place with a capacity of 150!

I learned that the Asian people, as much as Covid-19 caused them to be attacked, are smarter than MOST American people - Including the ones holding a valet sign at the beach in Florida in late March. Sad but true.

Now we are once again seeing a massive surge in more and more Covid-19 cases. And I was just getting more and more angered by it - to the point I felt so bad that I went to confession at my church for it (a small church in FL is the only one open by my dads place when I visit there). I also have been limiting my time on this FB app, which became a toxic environment.

Then yeah, there was the election. Glad that's over with, and the forthcoming vaccine that I pray 🙏 will help. Meanwhile the gloom and doom of 2020 continues. Skydiving amongst many other things I love, has been shut down in many places. I know more and more people infected with Covid-19 - Like a silent monster encroaching on a sheltered in place group in a horror movie.

So tonight we ring in the new year. Hope everyone remains safe and healthy. Only God will know if 2021 has light at the end of a tunnel :)

John Monteverdi And in Florida I saw more people out DURING the lockdown in March / April than a normal day. Traffic, no parking, charging valet, etc. looked like black Friday. And see long line waiting for table at beach restaurant. Not young teens nor spring breakers - These were all senior citizens. Two old men fighting over a parking spot too. Yet I stayed home 3 weeks and just drove by beach isolated in my car by myself and saw THIS. So who is the real ridiculous person (not me, that's 4 sure)?

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura is feeling fed up.

I wake up this morning and barely get into 2 threads on my Facebook feed and I'm just appalled. All this hate, Covid-19 "gloom and doom", anti-Chinese comments, no talking about a promising vaccine, etc. literally in my face. Ruins my morning and rest of the day too. Enough is enough.

I had a fiasco with one of those last week with an Asian woman that was supposedly friends with a lot of storm chasers.

I accepted then she (or IT) sent me a message asking for my age, then vanished ghosted me afterwards.

I blocked her and unfriended, esp after asking a few of her "mutual" storm chasing friends about them knowing her, and they didn't.

Fortunately I woke up the next day and unlike all the other times the pain was almost gone. Usually it starts as a barely subtle tingle (like a subtle TCU field ahead of the dryline), then pressure (a convective shower), then throbbing debilitating (drop to my knees) pain (E-F5 wedge tornado) after 2 or 3 days. Bursitis flares are no joke.

If "someone farted" on my knee (or hit it with a hammer, or dropped a feather on it, it doesn't matter) I'll feel a "tingle" a day later then by day 3 - I simply cannot walk. Housemaid's knee is what its called and it's debilitating pain.

Patella (sounds like an India name, lol) bursitis is no joke. Not sure why my knees cannot even take a single kneel on a hard surface even momentarily ... Then the insidious pain sets in DAYS LATER.

Anyone dealing with this too? Any advice (other than spending $1500 at the ER like I did in Fountain Valley CA in 2015)?

Tis' the season to push and shove, not find what you need, and catch "Covid-19" instead (after hearing "we don't have it" from a store) ;(

That's the ADDITIONAL frustrations of 2020. Wait TWICE in a store - And expose yourself to more virus (from going to many places) in the process (finding what you need or not has NO effect on you getting sick) :[[[

With the subject of some people in bad car accidents and walking away relatively unscathed (or without life lasting injuries), I had such a close "brush" with death on Dec 23, 2006. Even @[1028447103:2048:Evan Hatch] would cringe seeing this (BTW, glad he made it as well).I was returning home to my place in S Florida, having driven a mere 2 miles to the post office to send out a last minute Christmas gift. A flat bed tow truck, with a driver simply not looking to see me in his right lane before changing lanes, struck my Ford Focus. My drivers side door was ripped off and I rolled several times. I was airlifted to a hospital for an overnight stay.Despite the sheer violence of the crash - You go figure how I "stumbled out of THAT" in the picture (other than God standing in my shoulder) - I escaped with just a big cut across my face and some bruises (and probably 8 lives to spare out of the 9 I had). Lucky enough to convince me to go back to church ever since! The very next day and after leaving the hospital I first saw my family and gave them all a hug hug ... I travel a lot and airliners clear air with a full exchange every 2 minutes. I've flown dozens of times since Covid-19 began and never got sick (ofcourse I wear mask as required).

Yet the attacks about me being "stupid enough to fly" on social media made my life a living hell.

I can attest to "stupidity" in a real sense and it's not on any airplane. Back in late March in S Florida I saw a bunch of senior citizens fighting over parking and jamming restaurants. This was DURING a stay home order. So much that they were forced to charge for valet parking.

So yeah, who is REALLY "stupid"?

Ofcourse I'm always with a mask and would get the vaccine once it becomes available for my group.

I was thinking of this flying cross country. 6 hours in a plane going 550 MPH. To fly 12,000 miles (to Asia) it can take 15 hours. Basically half way around.

So what about Jupiter? 10 times that. So 150 hours in an airliner (not including fuel stops). Across the face of the sun? 1,500 hours (~2.5 months)!

There are stars 1000s of times larger than our sun. So whats that? 2,500 months on an airliner going nearly 600 MPH? On a plane for over 200 years? Just to cross the face of that star :)

Thanks for the good work. In comparison Elsinore has no one outside nor on the plane wearing masks. Just in the office you are required to mask up and have temperature taken to manifest. Outside and on the plane people look at me funny because I'm the only one wearing a mask. Pre Covid-19 I jumped twice every weekend, mingling with folks afterwards. Now I just rush one jump a month if that and pack / leave just to stay current. Kinda sad.

At the skydiving place in Lake Elsinore, CA, I was the ONLY one wearing a mask (out of hundreds) and people there look at me like I was stupid. I used to skydive two times every week, and mingle with folks afterwards.

Now, after seeing this ... I jump once a month to stay current. I just get on plane, pack rig when done, and leave. No mingling. These aren't just the people on the plane, but shoulder to shoulder in the office, training, and pack / manifest areas. Sad.
