Jason Foster I was wondering about that. I think the sky was partly to mostly cloudy (lightning and stars visible through cloud breaks briefly) with pressure I measured around 954 mb.

The actual pressure center is far smaller than the cloud boundaries of the eye. That explains the breezy warm conditions and no rain.

I think its typical on the eastern side of the eye (right side). I wonder if the folks in Sulphur got the dead calm offset to the west of the eye centre?

Sitting here in Lake Charles (Louisiana USA) and probably (and unfortunately) before the demise of this town. These pictures are earlier (around 2 PM CDT) near Holly Beach. Storm surge flooding is already occurring well in advance of hurricane Laura. Being stuck here as the storm hits will mean certain death.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on iCyclone's post.

I figured I'd fly into New Orleans a day or so earlier for Marco but its not going to be much of anything.

Laura is impressive seeing it strengthen OVER RUGGED TERRAIN! Probably the excellent upper level support and edges or the storm over warm water ... Sometimes referred to as the "brown ocean effect".

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on Kevin Short's post.

Flying from LA to Texas, looking down you could not even see the ground clearly. Like a tawny layer.

Posted: Aug 23, 2020, 8:14 PM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura updated his status.

As pretty much expected, Marco weakened below hurricane strength and should come in tomorrow afternoon near Grand Isle as a strong tropical storm. Marco is NOT why i went to Louisiana.

The ability to bump west in a few days for what supposed to be hurricane Laura is the reason I flew out here. Marco I would not have bothered with in itself. Its **possible** Laura might be a major hurricane coming ashore come Wednesday late afternoon.

Monday looks like a good bet hurricane Marco will hit near the Bayou and Laura (if she holds together) just 36 to 48 hours later in nearly the SAME area! Hopefully both systems stay east and away from the higher shear to the west over Texas.

Decisions / decisions. Looks like a 99% chance of Florida being missed by Laura as it trudges well south over Hispanola and Cuba as a tropical storm. If it travels along its forecast track, by Monday, TS Laura may be barely a remnant low.

It might quickly regenerate in the Gulf with a far more W track due to it being a weaker and shallower system over Cuba. Then intensify and take aim on Louisiana.

Meanwhile, TS Marco will also move NW past Yucatan and into the NW Gulf. It will be very interesting seeing how these two storms interact, in what as known as the "Fujiwhara effect". Rare in the Atlantic basin if that happens.

My plan is to hold tight and possibly fly to Dallas or Houston on Monday. If it's worth going. If it is, would we see a storm chase of Marco in Texas, then Laura less than a day later and a couple hundred miles east into Louisiana?

Maybe.

Not liking the weak structure of TS Laura, and, even worse, that it is taking the HMR "Hispaniola Mountain Route" in the worst possible path a tropical cyclone can take across the Greater Antilles. The scary thing is that STATISTICALLY the more stores you go to, the more your being exposed?

Also sucks waiting just to get INTO the store, go to aisle and they "don't have it", get mad, curse like a sailor, get back in car, go to next store, and REPEAT!

AND go home with exposure risk and less gas in your tank. And no rubbing alcohol.

Can you find these items in a grocery (or department) store you visit?

Note: Rate them from easiest to hardest.

1. Peroxide
2. Rubbing alcohol
3. Toilet paper
4. Hand sanitizer

For me, the easiest to find is #4 (1st store), the hardest is #2 (went to 5 stores only to cuss wildly since no one had it).

So MY rating was 4, 3, 1, and 2.

Basically chicken noodle soup, "doctored up" and on steroids. Now I cook my favorite "chicken stew" and its a hit with friends and family for many years as a "legacy".

Same to be said for my BBQ ribs and pot roast. God bless these family recipes! Sorry, no, I'm not posting the recipes - Haha!

Dave Lewison Yeah I am in California now, and in a low-case area, away from any major city. I left Florida to work in Colorado and after I was laid off I only briefly been to FL to check on family and my autistic brother's guardianship I handle. I avoided chasing Isaias there because of this, and canceled a trip to go there, doing needed paperwork online. I am hoping for a Gulf Coast strike, and FL stays out of it, unless it's the Panhandle and far from S Florida. I'll be happy to just get one chase under my belt for a hurricane in 2020 and just leave it at that.

My dad, working and loving football, is devastated. Like us not going storm chasing AT ALL, multiplied 100x for him.

Chasing, as you know, WAS affected for me. Not only missed the "pre season" stuff (flight restrictions) - Or I should say "the main stuff" since May / June were like August in Texas.

But I learned to just write off any other "fun" event this year. No concerts. No sports. No airshows. No movies. No buffet dining, another thing I really enjoyed.

And speaking of "buffet", watch, all this years major hurricanes would hit Mexico, Bahamas, Jamaica, etc = Where we "can't go" ;(

Melanie Lorraine Metz Yeah. For me, tornado wise, 2020 has been my worst year since I started chasing in 1999. Covid-19 and bad timing was the cause - In addition to almost nothing in May and June. May 23 was a promise, but still missed everything in Iowa since tornadoes were on the ground at 11 AM instead of the more typical after 4 PM. Not a good year.

Isn't that amazing. A storm chaser moves to a "centralized 'hot spot' for storms" and it never fails. The storms always develop on opposite sides of your chase turf. Forcing you to drive (or fly) anyway and spend $$$ on hotels. Stinks.

Some peoole even asked me to move to their city because where I go there's 'no tornadoes'! Because me presence there suppresses those deadly storms and loss of life and property is minimized. Yes, I have been told that :)

Murphys Law has been having quite a year with 2020, depending on ones point of view, I guess.

This year the central USA (May and June) was so much less than expected tornado wise. Much of my hurricane chase funds were zapped away. That's why I didn't bother to chase Hanna nor Isaias. You can only try so much. Plus April 22 and July 8 (when I was NOT out there) hurt - A lot. Hopefully we will chase a good hurricane. And Covid-19 / Trump won't f'ck that up too.

It stinks Isaias suckered so many into Florida and nothing happened there. I'm glad you were able to make it to the Carolinas.

The storm began re intensifying because of the lower storm relative shear it was experiencing. Near Florida the shear was cross wind (storm moving WNW with SW flow aloft). When it neared the Carolinas it was moving more NNE, and faster, so the shear (as far as the storm "felt") weakened despite the S to SW flow aloft still stronger.

The reason why I didnt fly out at last minute was because the storm came in at night :/

You must have been so tired after this one. I know that feeling. I went through that in Issac in 2012 (strong Cat 1 in Louisiana). I was actually hallucinating from lack of sleep.

The feeder band ahead of Isaias is backing the surface flow and interacting with the upper trough / jet stream to the NW with multiple tornadic HP supercells. The radar image is the base reflectivity with the bottom insets Doppler velocity (lefr) and CC / debris (to the right). Please take these storms seriously as there is most likely a large rain wrapped tornado (just passed very near Suffolk and E of Windsor. You will NOT see this tornado visually (rain wrapped and it night) - Seek cover if you are in the tornado warning area!

I rarely kill bugs and have a lot of respect for animals. I was a bit sad seeing the "bug on a string" and figured I would post it on here, and got some nasty private messages from it. Thought it would be different than whining about politics, weather, or Covid-19, just a break from the norm. Oh well. As for me, I see bugs in my apartment and catch / release them outside. They have a life too.

iCyclone Yeah it was a mad dash (Derek Sibley and I) with me preaching to Tim Millar to come along. We basically drove through the "moat" (space between outer and inner eye wall) so it wasnt all that bad. 95% of the "kinetic energy" (wind) is on the inner edge of the inner eyewall in a storm like that.

Definitely not your "type", Josh!

I was looking at this as of the 11 PM advisory last night (8 PM PDT here in OC in S Cali), and literally had the NHC / satellite window open on my laptop, along with the last-minute air / car reservations to Orlando, FL (leaving midnight) with the "book now" button yearning to be pressed ... I saw the "Nate-like (2017 in MS / 'half-cane')" look to it and just powered down the laptop and went to bed.

2020 working its wonders :/

Posted: Aug 1, 2020, 10:50 AM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Mark Aubin's comment.

A weaker storm will move more west with the low-level flow (850 MB and under). It has an exposed center now, with all the weather, and mid level circulation, sheared away to the NE. Had there been no shear and dry air, the storm would be moving N with the 700-500 MB deep layer steering flow.

Posted: Aug 1, 2020, 10:46 AM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on his own photo.

Update: Looks like an exposed low-level center is coming out from under the rest of the storm being sheared away to the NE. If this happens, that center may move WEST into places like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, but not as a hurricane.

Posted: Aug 1, 2020, 10:45 AM

Wow 20+ kts of drier shear in the 500 to 700 mb layer too. Yuck. Don't met the cirrus tops on the visible satellite fool you.

Posted: Aug 1, 2020, 7:51 AM

Like supercells and tornadoes under a jet stream in the central USA - Vertical wind shear can be a powerful force. But the opposite applies for tropical cyclones, which are destroyed by shear (and avert a disaster).Hurricane Isaias this morning (near Andros Island in the Bahamas) fought hard against increasing wind shear, and the infrared satellite shows it! The main image shows the hurricane around sunrise with cold (-85 C) cloud tops, meaning high cloud tops and a stronger storm. The inset to the lower right was just a few hours later and only shows blue colors, denoting the tall thunderstorm clouds, called "hot towers", basically evaporated into nothing, because of drier air in addition to the shear. Also the storm is moving more NNW instead of NW, and slowing down. With a storm barely skirting the east coast of FL, leaving the western, weaker side (left), to affect FL. The west side will have little weather on it, in fact, no hurricsne forced winds were even found in the SW quadrant.I'm wondering if this storm will actually make weather in Florida BETTER than the norm? Albeit windy, but probably with less rain than a typical day in Florida away from the offshore core of Isaias!Note: I am most likely NOT chasing this.
