For many in Florida it looks like a possible minimal hurricane will be affecting the area from the Palm Beaches northward, especially during the night into Sunday morning. This storm has been a tricky call track wise with the western (weaker left) side grazing the coast and the worst staying offshore. Ofcourse one little westward track change will bring the stronger side in.Most likely this will be a 75 or 80 MPH hurricane if it hits S Florida directly, but unlikely much more than that. The attached image is from the Bahamas radar (reflectivity), showing the developing eyewall at 6:05 (in the lower right insert) then at 6:45 (main image). The storm is already struggling with impending shear and drier midevel air to the west (left). And the eye at 6:45 is showing that. But still too early as this may be just internal dynamics of the storm. It's a delicate balance between very warm water and mediocre upper air support. Let's see which one wins out?

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on Derek Sibley's photo.

I pretty much - Like with Hanna passed up my window to fly in and chase this in S Florida. 2020 has been like rolling dice and too many times I chose NOT to "play" :(

The appearance of the storm, plus the dry air to the west of it on WV imagery and shear discouraged me again from getting tickets. I guess for those who did head out to Florida, they will see something after all ... But a category 1 - And at night (as it stands now) at best.

Yeah but a recurving storm creates a break in the ridge and its basically "follow you and follow me" and the USA is essentially "vaccinated" against a hurricane landfall.

Not the kind of "vaccine" we as storm chasers need right now ;(

Mark Madison The Virgin Galactic plane is far from orbital. Roughly 2,500 moh, where orbit is 17,500 and at least 3 or 4 times higher. Basically like a dolphin jumping out of water and through the air, but with the water surface being the "top" of the atmosphere compared to something flying. A ballistic flight. Falling more than "flying" :)

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Larry Martin's comment.

Larry Martin I totally agree. And ofcourse the prices will come down, maybe 5,000 instead of 250,000+ but that would be very far ahead.

I am a skydiver and I see how stuff for extreme or unique events is marketed. Say you want to jump from 24,000 feet instead or 12,000. They have that available time to time with special events, using oxygen.

If i do it,, I pay $35 a jump instead of $25, since I'm licensed. The tandem (attached to instructor) jumpers pay up to $3000, or more, for it, instead of $150 from 12,000 - And many did, mostly older and rich people.

To do a zero G flight, you pay at least $5000. But I've done it riding along in skydive planes with a fun pilot for just $20 in the day (same experience, maybe 15 secs of zero g instead of 25 AND got to jump out). All about marketing and demand. Ofcourse the skydive places make their profits off those paying $200 instead of those paying $20.

These space program / tourist startups such as Virgin and Blue Origin will probably turn a massive profit on such forthcoming tech just because thrill seekers with deep pockets and fortune will be the first. These profits will hopefully support further research and development (engineers make at least 6 figures) and eventually the sky high prices will come down as tech is tweaked and more available.

Sort of like a microwave oven or PC in the 1980s costed many hundreds or thousands then, but now is like $25 due to it being widely available and all the kinks worked out.

Flying on a jet airplane in the 60s / early 70s could cost thousands in today's money - Only the wealthy can do it then. But look today, where you can fly Southwest for $49 :)

Basically "near space" / Karman line (62 miles) in a ballistic trajectory. No where nears orbit. Still I would LOVE to do this, but probably never afford the cost of a 4 bedroom home for a quick ride in the sky.

A similar radar view presents itself this afternoon off Hawaii in the Pacific basin (as we had off S Texas yesterday) - Without all the spotter dots.Looks like the southern (weaker) eyewall of hurricane Douglas with 85 MPH winds, may graze the N tips of Oahu and Kauai as it moves towards the WNW. The storm is on a gradual weakening trend.

Greg Ansel Exactly. In Florida these are rampant and my life was made a living hell by an HOA when I owned a home from 2000 to 2008. We called them the "board of elders".

My neighbor tried to introduce himself at an HOA meeting to the president and he refused to shake his hand - Saying "I wouldn't have done what you did with 'that fountain'!", copping up an attitude with my neighbor. He was extremely upset about this.

Long story short, there is a stain tank for anti-rust, that goes into the sprinkler system to prevent rust stains, since a shallow well is used on such lawn sprinkler systems in S Florida. Well, he got "liquid edge - That you mix with water to kill grass and weeds" ... He put that in the arrogant HOA president's stain tank. His lawn died. Hah!

The stronger stuff would up being on the south side of the storm, due to slight northerly shear on it / land interaction. Not an easy place to chase (why i didn't go). Great work.

Pretty good location. Derek Sibley and I were looking at that area had we gone out for Hanna. It stinks as its hard to get on the direct coast there due to Kings Ranch / remote Padre Island. Buoy 42020 is in the calmer eye just east of there with 28.86" and 6 MPH winds. Probably not a monster storm by your standards but at least a good warm-up for what's to come!

Many people don't realize that that area between CRP and South Padre is "uninhabited" private land and does not have any access.

Posted: Jul 24, 2020, 2:44 PM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura updated his status.

Tropical Storm Hanna is now expecting to become a minimal hurricane during a daytime landfall on Saturday afternoon along the Texas coast.

But am I going? Well, "No" - And here is why...

1. I have funds and travel put aside for storms each year. Including hurricanes. Hanna will probably not be a strong storm at landfall, and a category 1 hurricane at best. This does not justify dropping $500 to $1000 on a chase trip (air, car, hotels, etc) when a much better storm WILL happen in Aug / Sept.

2. The region it will make landfall in (and probably the main reason I chose not to go). Between South Padre Island and Corpus Christi, there is no coastal access - Nothing. Highway 77 runs 5-6 miles inland from the expected landfall point. The island itself is a remote barrier island, Kings Ranch, and does not have any access by car (just by boat / sea plane, obviously not a safe option in this case).

3. Travel to Texas is into a major Covid-19 hot zone, especially Houston. There may be restrictions. Thats not why I chose not to go, but for those traveling there, keep that in mind. For example, chasers like Dave Lewison and Scott McPartland may face restrictions flying between NY or Texas. Other states may require a quarantine period as well.

4. There will be a major over-hype of this storm. Not only will it be the first "chaseable" tropical cyclone (or even the first hurricane), there will be both a huge media / chaser presence - All filming basically the same thing. Law enforcement and road blocks would be a MAJOR issue, given the storm being too strong to be "taken lightly", yet too weak to drive law enforcement / road blocks away. Kinda like Florence in NC in 2018, but much weaker, but with all the authorities out.

Not trying to discourage anyone, but that is at least my opinion from a hurricane chasing perspective. This storm is just the very start of what's to come this hurricane season. For those who head out, stay safe and be careful.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on Localize's post.

First of all I don't like big crowded urban city life. Parking your car there can cost more a month than rent in other cities for a decent apartment.

One possibility is taking over or inheriting a place family got long ago. I have a friend living for $700 a month in a large apartment (on rent control) he was handed down from his sister. That same place is $5000 at market price.

OR ... You have to be rich and / or with a 6+ figure stable job to live in NYC. Or live in Brooklyn for 2/3 of what it costs in NYC and commute there.

The figures are estimated in this post are leaning on the low side of such costs. Its up to you ... If you love NYC and big city life, you have to pay the costs. Like living in any major downtown. I rather spend a 6+ digit figure on travel and enjoying life than living (in a over priced crowded megapolis) or just rent :/

Also, you probably won't need a car to live there since public transit is very good. A car can put a huge financial burden on you with just finding parking.

Mona Lowenthal Krimsky I am so against the ruined and commercialized nature of that once beautiful family day.

I remember waking up and smelling the roasted turkey and cranberry jelly on Thanksgiving, seeing my grandparents greeting me and I'll NEVER forget.

Not like in 2017 when I pulled strings and bent over backwards to fly to Florida and spend the holiday by myself (my dad canceled everything last minute and went away) instead. Got written up too for that. Lovely ey?

Then after all this I tried to drive back to the airport, bam = battery dead. No one to jump me. Missed my flight back. That's why I was written up.

Good times. F'ck your "discounts" too.

Yet all the millennials say I'm old when I post such feelings.

Posted: Jul 22, 2020, 12:19 PM

I heard Walmart (and I HOPE) many other stores are closing on Thanksgiving and much of black Friday......Thats good to hear. Thanksgiving was one of my favorite times to enjoy with food and family. My mom (RIP) hated black Friday and all the mayhem and always tried to bring family together on Thanksgiving. I know I'm old school by today's standards but Thanksgiving certainly isn't a holiday to whittle out of existence and turn everyone into selfish, discount hungry maniacs. The last straw for me was a couple years ago when I pulled tons of strings to make sure I was home in Florida (work was out of state) to enjoy Thanksgiving with my dad and his girlfriend, only for them to leave town and I was literally by myself. I was so sad, and my boss wasn't happy either (flew down to FL and back, making an extra trip, only for my own family to cancel it, so it was all for nothing). My buddy, Derek Sibley and his mother Dana Kavner Sibley, kinda saved my sanity having a great get together for Thanksgiving instead. Watching football and enjoying great FOOD and friendship. Not some DEAL on a TV. That evening we went to Walmart to see if we can see anyone fighting (to laugh at).Hats off to Detek and his mom. And if it was up to me, EVERY STORE should be CLOSED and locked up on that Thursday. And open up at 9 AM Friday (not 3 AM). The goods can wait for sale and won't go anywhere those extra hours. Is it really THAT f'cking important? No. Family I think is.https://youtu.be/ZsR-SFcIbtk

Then this guy walks up to me and a few others offering to sell over $30 of two good prices of meat to me and a couple others for $10.

So he knew the store didn't have a lot of it, so he took the last pieces and decided to scalp them for $10 cash, then ofcourse you'll check out and pay the $30 anyway for the "rare" find.

I'm sure he pulled this low life move with toilet paper a couple months ago too.

So what do I pay him $10 then the $30 at the register? It clearly was meat from the same Walmart. I looked and they were out of beef and I got pork anyways. Lindsey Fowler Mine was a total of $285 from July 12-16 with insurance and taxes. Thats like 5 days, so not bad. Beats paying that for one day.

It was with Payless, which is another story in itself. The three companies, Avis, Budget, and Payless are now combined (with Avis being the main carrier). But at Denver they don't tell you that - And people waiting for a Budget / Payless shuttle bus never see one ... Later being told to take the Avis shuttle.

Once at Avis ... There's the line. You know if just 2 or 3 people are in front of you renting cars - It can take 20 to 30 mins? Well, low and behold - About 40 or 50 people were in the line at Avis, since they're handling the other 2 companies as well. Can take 2 hours to get your car, and NO, there is NO self service Kiosks.

There's Avis "preferred" - Where you can walk to your car and skip the line, and I have that. But Payless and Budget DO NOT show up on it, so you have no other choice to wait with the rest of the "steerage"!

I always use hand sanitizer at the gas pump, with mask, and even gloves (or use paper towel) to pump the gas with minimal touching otherwise.

I also been noticing a lot of gas pumps out of paper, so you have to go inside and get a receipt. That just increases risk even more.

Disgraceful - Just look at yourselves. If you are in FL = S T A Y H O M E !!!!!

I'll be storm chasing starting today in Colorado and enjoying a rare July chase setup for a few days ... Then possibly continue part time work there or in S California ... I'm just not comfortable being in "Italy / NYC II" (S Florida) right now :(

Well explain this. I was shopping in a local Walmart earlier and looking for some pork / beef to grill. This older white dude comes up to me with two packages of beef and says "hey, this is $30 in meat ... Its 'yours' for $10"!

I declined. Wait a minute. This was IN the store. So what do I pay him $10 then the $30 at the register? It clearly was meat from the same Walmart. I looked and they were out of beef and I got pork anyways.

So what on earth was this guy trying to do?

With the tropics dead and nothing else to do, I decided to make a trip to a strange late season July storm setup from Colorado to the Dakotas - Flying into Denver Sunday (July 12) afternoon and out until early Thursday (July 16).

The airfare was using points (pretty much free) and for some reason the daily rate for car rentals out of DIA went from $150 a day to $34 a day. Plus an escape from the high risks (Covid-19 that is) of FL. Greg Ansel, will you be out there at all?

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura commented on Adam Lucio's post.

You are social distanced by default when chasing solo like that. I avoided crowds, with the most risky activity probably touching a gas pump.

Back in April when I was planning my chase trips I got a lot of "WTF? Why you going out there? You are foolish!" remarks from many.

Well, one of those "bad remarks" came from someone who later caught Covid-19 at a rally, but recovered. His grandfather caught it too, from him, and wasn't so lucky.

I messaged him many times but for some reason won't write back. Humm. I wonder why?

Dave Lewison I think the bird would spin wildly along the Z axis. The term is a "couple" in physics. Kinda like a 737 with one engine in reverse thrust.

Finally and after rather long delays due to the pandemic, a book of mine is finally available entitled "Storm Chasers - The Wild and Violent Skies Of Kansas". It is being setup on several major sites including Amazon. This is my first full illustrated book on storm chasing.

Dave Lewison Yeah it was not obvious on any data until maybe an hour before the event if you looked at the mesoscale analysis tools.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Jason Foster's comment.

Jason Foster Wow. So the algorithm us keeping a "trending" stance on the posts and the reactions rather than just posting and anyone seeing them?

Thats a good point and explains why many people asked me on FB about a particular storm event I posted the heck out of, yet they could not see it.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Dalton Do's comment.

Dalton Do Yeah it was taken using S 20 ultra frame capture mode. Where three seconds are kept before you hit the button. Great for lightning. Plus the night exposure is pretty good. No Photoshopping :)

So I guess this is what happens when 99% of the storm chasers aren't out there?

2020 and its "deviant" behavior pulls a fast one in SW Kansas, in an area not even outlooked by SPC.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Jason Foster's comment.

Jason Foster Yeah, Jack Corso too, I think the algorithm is hiding some of my great posts on storms, skydiving, and flying. I thought creating a new account would help but obviously not.

Looks like if its a negative rant or comment, it gets dozens of replies. Not just mine but others too.

Even my "epic" video of Michael's eye in 2018 got 2 or 3 likes, plus one "you crazy f'cktard" abusive comment (if that counts, lol) that I deleted.

You said treat as a "website"? I am convinced to treat FB as I would a "dating app" :(

I have a best friend in Chicago who has a friend who is a idiot alcoholic, driving drunk in Kenosha, WI and pulled over for it all the time.

But since he worked in the courthouse he is let off and escorted home by police. No jail, no tickets.

So what you got to say about that?

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Doug Kiesling's comment.

Doug Kiesling And the reason why Jason Foster thinks I'm a dick.

An automated way of making money scanning license plates is wrong. I'm not a dick, but with FB the way it is, people don't see that.

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Jason Foster's comment.

John Monteverdi Its an automated system and these, and red light cameras caused nothing but accidents and problems.

If you wanna catch someone speeding, get out there and do it. A camera system won't stop anything.

Next time I'll do 160 in a 55, see what kind of "ticket" that gets?

Posted: Jul 1, 2020, 9:43 AM

Sky-Chaser Chris Collura replied to Jason Foster's comment.

Jason Foster Okay. I drove 22,721 miles without incident or pull over.

I didn't fight this and paid it promptly when I got back to Florida.

Jason, please leave the attitude at bay. FB and the world is rough enough the way it is ;)

May your day be wonderful.

Iowa at it's finest ... It was a pleasure seeing some "compensation" for 22,721 miles of storm chasing as a cool "gift" in my mailbox back in FL yesterday......Aren't they supposed to be removing these red light / speed cameras? Guess not.
