Lori Ferguson I meant that jokingly some friends of mine and I compare "Tom Brady and the Patriots" to "Josh M and iCyclone" ... Both are sports or hobbies (competitive or not) but win nearly 100% of the time in what they do in terms of track records.

Plus it's not fair everyone becomes a "bandwagon" Patriots fan JUST because they nearly ALWAYS win. I've seen many of those dreadful NE logos on cars out here in California.

I'm out here and always kept the Dolphins logo on my Jeep. I love them regardless on how bad or good (that would be nice though) they are doing.

This is gonna be a weak system and the worst that can happen will be bad drivers in Miami and Palm Beach, and ruined weekend plans. At this time it's certainly not worth it for me to drop $1k between airline and car rentals to just see rain.

Chris Collura replied to Stephen Sponsler's comment.

Stephen Sponsler To me a storm chase is NOT good when people are getting hurt. After Katrina in 2005 I was really emotional (crying and all).

To me a "thrill" with chasing is something like seeing a supercell or tornado over open fields with no injuries. Hard to come by when hurricane chasing (fear and sadness instead of thrills).

It's called "Click Bait".

Smart Louise That's only if you have substantial shelter. If you know that your life is in imminent danger and the structure your in would not survive the backside of the hurricane, then yes ... You will need to relocate, hopefully during the calmer eye.

Chris Collura replied to Jas Phillips's comment.

Jas Phillips Plus the pressure trace to me is actually not super fast dropping (the storm was only moving at 5 mph or so).

But this is even worse for anyone under that eyewall. Exposed to the same winds that are in an intense or violent tornado for a long duration.

Posted: Sep 10, 2019, 12:07 PM

Chris Collura commented on Peggy Hamner Willenberg's post.

Link is click bait (lots of junk news and ads) but prime examples of such people are as follows...

1. Jet fuel hoax (saying airliners use compressed air to fly and lie charging you for fuel in expensive tickets).

2. The earth is flat (despite proof the earth is round scientifically and in many photos showing a curve from high altitude or space).

3). Faked lunar landing, saying it was shot on a stage (despite proof via Saturn 5 rockets and elite astronauts who went there).

Total embarrassment.

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Lori Ferguson Thanks. I'll be fine. Chit happens. In 2013 my mom died Sept 12, which is this week. And like 89 that was a bad year (anytime after May 31). In 89 Hugo hitting SC (I couldnt go due to college) was intermingled with horrible family and personal problems. Oh and a lemon car (84 Camaro) thrown into it all.

My big problem is I have flashbacks due to traumatic experiences in the past and some dreadful things remind me of them. Right now I'm worried about my work here, medical stuff (I was already written up and how am I gonna explain I have to go back to FL for Dr?), and the Jeep (guaranteed that all the negative energy I brought from FL due to Dorian broke something in my car)!

Posted: Sep 10, 2019, 8:11 AM

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Lori Ferguson OK. Yeah I got very emotional about Dorian with high Hope's of chasing it near Melborne and saw it trending east more and more. Josh and Edds got on the flight before me (not canceled). That was a very hard pill to swallow.

In "consolation" I attempted to observe the large waves by Boynton inlet. Figuring I'll at least get something from it.

I was stopped by police there near the inlet, questioned, even searched. I was so embarassed.

Plus my flight going back to CA from FLL was cancelled. Affecting my work out here (even warned / written up yesterday). Ouch.

Plus I was in FL for important doctors Appointment and the office wasnt open because of the "Dorian" scare. Need to book another "special" trip for that (air tix expensive).

Then once back here ... blink!!!! Engine light comes on in my Jeep. The last time that light came on it was $1567. Lovely.

So I'll be OK but I hope you understand why I was stressed about this.

Anyone see how much this facility charges? $10,000 an hour! Yes. 5 figures, not the expected 2 (or 3) a family can enjoy.

Almost $1000 PER WAVE (every 5 or 6 mins). I got a 35 min ride in an L-39 fighter jet for $750 once. Humm.

You know this place is only a couple hours from the biggest ocean on earth (64,000,000 square miles of ocean called the "Pacific")?

There was a place near Austin, Texas that was $50 for kids and $100 for adults. I heard that place closed too - Pending sale to, you guessed it, Kelly Slater!

Chris Collura commented on Far & Wide's post.

I believe the tallest mountain is in the ocean (Hawaii big island) which is much higher than Everest is from base to top. Everest is the highest because mountains are measured by their MSL (above mean sea level) heights.

For example, the peak of Mona Loa in Hawaii is about 13,680 feet above sea level, but the Pacific Ocean ocean there is ~18,000 feet deep. So the mountain itself is almost 32,000 feet total height.

Beware, Greg, as I was contacted for writing storm chasing books by a person named "J Slater" at Fonthill Media regarding 142 pics and descriptions for chasing in Kansas - Only to be ghosted by him after finishing them and placing them on a dropbox link for him.

I removed the pics and captions from dropbox and I'm now waiting for them to show up on some other places. Daniel Shaw will know about it if that happens on his page for that.

The same Slater idiot even contacted Doug Kiesling and other chasers replying to them with the same original email, never even following up with legit answers.

Lori Ferguson That's correct especially when there is a nearby front to the northwest of the hurricane. Similar to Wilma crossing Florida in 2005. Rapid increase in wind speed with height too (~30 kts at surface and 80+ kts at 3000 feet) due to friction.

Chris Collura is feeling confused.

I'm "oh so close" (again) to change air tickets and fly back this weekend and just get in the car and chase Dorian to the Carolinas...

...BUT...

...I am resisting the temptation (intensity is good, but the track is what has me not sold on going).

If you loop the visible satellite and radar it is NOT moving NNW, more like due N (or even a tad E of N already).

Outside of the Bahamas, this has been a knife edge storm that just kept leaning right (or stalling). Just not worth wasting more time and $$$ on at this point.

Brian Stertz That's correct. The reason why the ocean is so calm is because the 15+ foot swells are being blocked by the wave shadow pattern of the Bahamas.

Posted: Sep 1, 2019, 11:17 AM

Chris Collura updated his status.

As you know my emotions as a storm chaser now are beyond a roller coaster.

First, between dealing with up tight folks on the road here in S Florida who have no idea what a REAL DISASTER (uh umm - Like the one destroying everything in the NW Bahamas now) is AND the fact I missed this by a canceled flight and wondering where this hurricane will go next.

Second, there will be complete devastation of Abaco (and even Grand Bahama) from this (like Barbuda in Irma in 2017), equivalent to a violent tornado (gusts near 200 knots). Its possible the island may remain un inhabited / abandoned after this (like Barbuda, Walkers Cay, etc). The loss of life is unimaginable.

Third, we do have people there chasing. And are entering the calm eye as we speak. For me, scientifically, this is a thing I'm so envious right now it hurts. But at the same time it's dangerous and I hope they (Jim Edds and Josh Morgerman) stay safe and survive this. If so, they will be stuck there requiring an air / boat lift out after dealing with no food, no power, airport destroyed, etc.

And finally, I see the models inching the storm back west towards Florida again. Large or powerful systems are more hesitant to change course. Maybe the models 3 days ago were right after all (?).

Pulled over earlier off Palm Beach, Florida for "checking the waves" (from the roadway) at a closed beach. The officer even went on to search my vehicle UNTIL I showed him my web site and what I do.He should be in the NE Bahamas, LOL, if he wants to be policeman.Yet, the beach 5 miles to the south was jammed and not even a single parking spot. Dorian is just making people absolutely miserable in every aspect. Here's the destructive surf evey one is terrified of... Seriously?Lets make it a "Brandon Clement" day :)Place: Deerfield Beach, Florida (26.3182, -80.0993) Address: Deerfield Beach, Florida 33441–33443

The edge of catastrophic hurricane Dorian can be seen offshore of Boynton Inlet in Palm Beach, Florida as it's probably destroying Abaco 200 miles to the east. The reason why there are no waves is due to the blocking effects of the Bahama wave shadow. The folks in the Bahamas, as well as chasers there, need prayers.

Two chasers are in Abaco since yesterday before their airstrip closed. Jim Edds and iCyclone Josh. I'm hoping they found a parking garage or something.
