That's definitely a dust devil as it is lifting the dust still swirls in the air but no more ground circulation. It lifts because it's hot rising air as it dissipates.

Never forget these three great people and the largest tornado in history on May 31, 2013 (six years ago) that took their lives in the name of science.Tim and his son Paul Samaras, and scientist Carl Young perished in this tornado near El Reno, Oklahoma along with another amateur storm chaser and 5 other people, all in their vehicles.

This is both unfortunate and scary. Loss of situational awareness is what hurts (or even kills) in such tornadoes.

I got on this storm too late. Still a very sour pill to swallow. My mistake was hanging out way too long SE of Salina before realizing anything was going on 100 miles to my west. I heard many MANY others did the same thing.

Looks like a break from chasing for a while (finally). Yesterday was not a good way to end a long chase trip segment, but it happens.

Today I simply cannot justify driving nearly 500 miles to the enhanced area south of the Red River and rushing there. I will be headed to Chicago in a couple of days for down time so maybe I'll catch a rogue storm in Iowa. Who knows.

It was awesome seeing you all out there in tornado alley this year!

Posted: May 29, 2019, 12:41 AM

Chris Collura commented on Bill Hark's photo.

That storm way northwest was extremely outlier of any forecasts and on the edge of the measly 2% SPC tornado probs. Unfortunately I realized there was even a storm out there and it was too late.

Posted: May 29, 2019, 12:31 AM

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's post.

Today if it makes you feel better was one of the worst chase days in my life. I was sitting 50 miles away from Topeka and waited there too long only to rush 90 miles to a tornado producing storm near Beloit (where I drove through in the morning!) Only to see it die right as I got to it - then 150 miles to the east a wedge goes through KC. Right now I'm just gonna go home. Sorry.

Once again the "good morning" of chasing was EARLY convection. Never a good thing. Unless things recover (HRRR shows line segments at 0z, probably invisible night time tornadoes taking lives again), the 15% you can basically shove it.

Oh AND "moving northeast at 55 mph" too. Is it late MAY or early March?

I am in Liberal, Kansas now pondering going west but maybe to W OK Panhandle extreme SW Kansas. The NAM shows another messy bow echo up north and (the bad word) "early" on. I not gobbling down hamburgers again for lunch only to mess with the mess again (before evening finishing lunch)!

Chris Collura commented on George Kourounis's post.

I woke up and just saw this.

Yesterday I was on a rain wrapped but weaker tornado embedded in about 1000 square miles of messy rain and nothing organized. Saw the wind shifted and popped my ears.

May 18 was a chase day involving a reposition down south to catch some storms in recovering air well behind a large MCS. In the left image, the SPC tornado probabilities are shown based on their 1630z enhanced risk outlook. The large 10% significant tornado threat over the Arklatex region was mainly for embedded supercell structures and vortices within a line of thunderstorms, and over poor chase terrain / forested areas, and not much of interest in a storm chasing manner. The smaller 5% risk area, accompanied by a 15% wind and 30% significant hail threat, was the objective area for today's chase. The middle image is the SPC Mesoscale Discussion 671 issued as well as subsequent severe thunderstorm watch box 186, valid until 10 PM CDT.

This is an annotated visible satellite image at roughly 23z showing the storms and environment unfolding over NW Oklahoma during airmass recovery at roughly 23z on May 18, 2019. Note the small supercell storms developing at the intersection of the dryline and stationary front. The MCS to the east was not of interest to storm chasing operations this day since it was over poor terrain with trees, as well as any tornadoes being embedded within the line of storms.

This is an annotated visible satellite image at roughly 23z showing the storms and environment unfolding over SW Nebraska and NW Kansas on May 17, 2019. May 17 was a major and complex chase day in southwest Nebraska. In the image above, the SPC tornado outlook is shown (within an enhanced risk as of their 13z outlook). The main target area was in Nebraska with a 10% (significant) tornado threat. Another area was also in SW Texas. Both of these areas produced tornadoes, including areas just south of the northern target. In the middle image, Mesoscale Discussion 649 is shown, and subsequent tornado watch box 172 to the right, valid until 10 PM CDT (9 PM MDT).

May 16 was a marginal chase day as well as a travel day to west-central Nebraska. The western end of a slight risk (as of 20z) was targeted with both up-slope wind flow and weak low pressure impinging into the Nebraska Panhandle from the west. The slight risk also had a highly conditional 2% tornado probability, and is annotated in the left image above. The middle image shows the Mesoscale Discussion 639 issued by the SPC. To the right is an annotated visible satellite image of the setup, showing small supercell storms firing over the Nebraska panhandle.

Currently in Lincoln Nebraska after spending down time in Chicago past week. Today (Thursday) will be some isolated severe up in central and W Nebraska before tomorrow's "big day" in south central Nebraska (I chose the northern setup for Friday).

After that its hopefully chase days with one off day in between until late May (???)

The feared ridge is currently breaking down and in a mere few days I'll be out of the Chicago area and back in the back-bone of tornado alley. Starting Friday (5/17) a severe weather "extravaganza" will unfold and continue well past the day 8 outlooks (even as far as May 25) as per SPC and some models! Definitely an event that's not for the faint of heart. This basically brings a mixed emotion. Ofcourse there is excitement - BUT also a feeling that lives and property may be lost - The latter is what we all hope WONT happen. Lets hope everyone will be safe out there over the next week or two, both storm chasers and non-chasers alike. It's gonna be a very busy time. Lets all do this - and do it right!

After the infection goes away, then get the tooth / original problem taken care of.

I am currently west of Albuquerque NM and hauling butt east to the target area near Amarillo TX after picking up my Jeep in CA last night and driving all night.

Why would they do this? Kinda mean in a sense......Fake wall outlets (realistic stickers) at the airport. That's just cruel :]

Chris Collura commented on Brandon Clement's post.

This is just both a tease and heartbreak for me and those not out there yet.

I'll push as hard as I can to make it out on late Tue the 7th. Hopefully not too late.

Posted: May 6, 2019, 8:37 AM

Chris Collura is feeling concerned.

Everything (appointments, medical, dental, family) is DONE as of this morning here in Florida. Now it's just getting back to California to pick up my Jeep (which is ready to go) and drive STRAIGHT to TEXAS (I 40 east)!

The "scarey" thing that may gum up the works is these "bird fart" non severe Florida storms that probably might delay my flight (SW Airlines at 4 pm) ... And since 737 Max planes can't fly yet, I have to connect in Austin.

But if I miss that I'll just rent a car and rebook in a few days. At least ill be stuck in Texas, not Atlanta or Vegas :/

...Just sick of missing stuff...

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Brandon Clement Yeah I know. At least pattern remains active through most of month according to models maybe with any ridging lasting 3 days at the longest. Oh wait, today was a weak upper ridge in Texas ... Lol.

Chris Collura commented on Brandon Clement's post.

This past week has been painful ... Since I'm unable to chase until May 7 onwards. Ugh.

Looks like as soon at I hit the California "ground" Monday evening I'm gonna hit it "running" - Blasting east to catch this weeks setup(s) after being in S Florida the past week!

My vehicle is all fueled up, hail guards on, equipment installed and all ready to go! Glad I did that before my Florida trip. Looks like I'll be driving I 40 most of the way out ... Possibly an all nighter if its really worth it.

Daniel Shaw, I once ate hail (after rinsing it off) like ice cubes and there was sand and grit in the hail stone itself. It was reddish too as the supercell that produced it had crazy dusty inflow pulling in the reddish Oklahoma soil several minutes before. Who knows "what else" was in there (manure?) :)

Chris Collura commented on Felipe Hurtado's post.

Skydive America was actually one of at least 4 drop zones that existed around Pahokee Airfield, mainly in the 1990s.

I believe Skydive Palm Beach was the first DZ there with Pat Doggin as the owner. This was around early 1997.

Then there was an issue with the airport owner and that was handed over to Skydive America (Larry Kirschenbaum) which was on an area to the north of the airfield with just the plane taking off the airfield and jumpers bused to and from the airfield. This was around 1999 to 2002.

There was briefly another DZ on site at Pahomee called "Palm Beach Extreme Skysports" (xXx) with someone from Skydive Chicago running it. Around 2002 or 2003. But that lasted a short time.

One final DZ was "Skydive South Beach", but that also lasted about 6 months, closing permanently in spring / summer 2004. Correct me if I'm wrong.

All the while Homestead (Skydive Miami) and Air Adventures (Clewiston) remained mainly Tandem operations with the latter small and ran by Quade (later expanded as Lisa Pate Hornsby acquired Air Adventures in the late 2000s). As of now, that seems to be the best DZ in S Florida (now called skydive "Spaceland" in Clewiston after it became owned by the Spaceland drop zones, in the early 2010s, which also are in Houston and one near Dallas).

Ironically, I THINK skydive "Spaceland" was doing tandem-only jump operations in - you guessed it - Pahokee a few years back (using a yellow Cessna 206) but I'm not sure if that happened or not. This was around 2014 I think.

I remember a great deal of friction with all the DZ owners and airport manager at Palm Beach (Pahokee). The guy absolutely hated skydivers and didn't want anything to do with the sport.

Plus when skydive Palm Beach first opened there was a drowning from a water landing. So being on the lake kinda tarnished the image of that DZ.

Jeffrey Budzynski I believe the dash 34 engines over torqued the wing. The same for king air 90s and 100s with the same engines. They are actually rated for 850 HP but are de rated to 750 to reduce stresses on the airframe.
