Idiots ... This is why I stay away from tourist traps. The coriolis force dont change like that within feet of the equator ... You need to go hundreds of miles away in each hemisphere AND it affects much larger low pressure areas ... far greater than micro-scales of a sink or bathtub! The basins are rigged to fool paying tourists.

Falling from both gravity AND the lift from the rotor, so its actually falling faster than the acceleration of gravity. This keeps the G loads on the aircraft positive.
Posted: Aug 30, 2018, 1:28 PM
Chris Collura replied to James S Howard's comment.
Probably all the G loads were kept positive and momentarily at 0 G maybe. A loop is positive all around. Rolling over and an inverted dive is still positive (relative to the aircraft).

Chris Collura replied to Jeffrey Buss's comment.
I think aerobatics are 4.3 positive G and up. 3.8 G to 4.3 G is "utility" category. Below 3.8 G is general Aviation (GA). So this puts it in the GA category as it's being kept under 3.8 for safety. Engine and fuel system modifications allow any negative Gs.

Chris Collura commented on Red Bull's video.
Same helicopter used in the James Bond movie Spectre. In that scene (it was supposed to be Mexico City but was shot at a coastal village near sea level for denser air for aerobatics as Mexico City is 7,500 foot elevation) the aircraft was repainted. I believe it is flown by Chuck Aaron (?).
I would be really concerned on the stresses on the rotor shaft and blades from gyroscopic inertia. These components are already under enough stress in normal flight. Other issues to avoid like vortex ring state need to be addressed by the pilots expertise. I'm sure the fuel system and engine also required extensive modifications.

Sometimes no matter how much you try you'll still f'ck it up. My body cannot handle even the mildest spicy foods. So I get chicken and cook it and sink my teeth into it and got an unpleasant surprise (hot!!!!!!) and it's subsequent unpleasant digestive effects......How on earth did I NOT SEE "spicy" clearly labeled on the bag?On another note - I DO ALWAYS SEE the little needle on my altimeter hit that little "3" (750 jumps and I'm still here) meaning it's time to open my parachute at 3,000 feet. Never f'ckd THAT up ... Yet.

I love just f'cking with scammers. I get call (guy from India) from some spoofed 350 area code saying they are from Visa offering low interest rates. First call I tell them I have a Visa card and they ask what my balance is...
...Honestly I say "about $200 and I pay it off at end of month..." they instantly hang up! A few minutes later the same idiots call back.
So I decide to play the game some more. This time I tell them I have a Visa with $10,000 balance. No hangup, and asks for my expiration date and credit card number. So I make these up!
Then the Indian guy precedes to verify the CC number again and which bank it's with. I say "Chase bank" and repeat the number...
...He lashed back with "you're an A Hole and go f'ck youself!" and hangs up (after wasting 15 minutes of his time)! Very professional and his English wasn't too bad :)

Cool meteogram plot of winds and sea level pressure from NOAA Buoy 51002 yesterday that took the eye passage of hurricane Lane (about 250 nm SW of Hawaii's Big Island). Although they were saying 130 MPH sustained winds at the time, a peak gust around 94 knots (105 mph or so) on the front of the storm has me wondering. Interesting plot though.

Yes but the winds only extend 40 miles from the center. So.it will be too far for any hurricane forced winds as the storm will pass 100 miles away. Still, there may be heavy rains and 40 to 50 mph winds on the east side of the storm brushing the islands.
Posted: Aug 22, 2018, 11:33 AM

It's going to miss by quite a distance too. The hurricane forced winds extend 40 miles out, and with the center passing 100 to 150 miles west, I doubt the "catastrophic damage" that most news agencies are over hyping will ever happen. Maybe some flash floods or high surf if that...

How in god's name are you gonna get hurricane forced winds if they only extend 40 miles from the center and the center will pass 100 to 150 miles west of the islands?
Wake up and learn how to FORECAST and not SCARE people.
Yeah ... there may still be catastrophic damage = To a houseboat venturing into the surf zone maybe...

Sad in many ways (akin to Florida's red tides) ... Looking down from an airliner passing through 30,000 feet over Illinois (late on Aug 21) - Over 1,700 miles away from California - The smoke layer from the California wildfires (reaching as high as 20,000 feet) can be seen below, even blocking a clear view of the ground. A reminder on how the earth and atmosphere is connected and vulnerable to pollution / climate changes.

I believe this so called "catastrophic damage" will be flooding and mudslides and nothing from strong winds (unless the storm does a hard right turn into the big island at 150+ MPH). This storm has peaked and should begin weakening and probably would affect the NW part of the island chain as a strong tropical storm (or minimal hurricane) at night.

People in north-central Illinois should pay attention to possible rotating storms near the warm front later this afternoon. The HRRR paints a decent supercell near the Rockford / Rochelle, IL area on a few runs. It's a 2% SPC tornado area and its 2018.

The craziest "double" chase I had was tropical storm Bonnie then major Cat4 hurricane Charley a day later. The storms were a mere 22 hours apart striking Florida (Aug 12-13, 2004). The latter one, Charley came in at 150 MPH (Punta Gorda / Port Charlotte).
These type of "one two" punches are relatively common in the Asian / Pacific areas (esp Philippines) but not common in the USA / let alone Florida.

And as you said, if you find cheap insurance NOW with low income / between jobs it's the worst thing you can do. It will go way WAY up once you find work with higher salary.
Fortunately what I got is very good and locked in to ~330 a month, about 1/4 what a new policy of the same benefits would cost me. Guess I was wise never cancelling it years back!

...Turned out I have a "grandfathered" policy that is "selling" for $1200 per MONTH now as a new one ... Read that right: One Thousand and Two Hundred PER MONTH (NOT per QUARTER)!
(Note: I'm single, healthy, non smoker)
IF I downgrade to the cheapest HMO I'll be paying $575 a month. Decided to just keep what I got! Wow ... what screwage, ey? What about people with families? Over $20,000 a year? Half you're yearly salary for insurance? Jesus...

Probably just gusty winds and rain. Wont have much of an effect on the eruption other than some of the vapors being dispersed. Large waves will affect south and SE facing beaches too. Very powerful storms like that have the core winds (eyewall) across a small area around the center, which will miss the islands by at least 150 miles.

Ugh. Those delays and how they compound everything. Like leaving the office at 4:45 PM instead of 4:30 PM causes you to hit the rush hour peak, and you get home at 7 PM instead of 5 PM. A 5 or 10 minute flight delay can do the same chain of events.

Chris Collura replied to George Kourounis's comment.
So I assume this delay wasnt weather related? Thunderstorms usually cause a delay with a $5 meal voucher (towards a $15 burger) and you sleep on the airport floor.

James Maxson Drive at NIGHT in Chicago (thinking there wont be traffic) and you'll be faced with roadblocks and closures due to construction.
Also up there severe delays aren't confined to rush hours, such as it being jammed on weekends too (Saturday and Sunday it's sometimes WORSE than Monday at 6 PM).
Also, their rush hours ain't 7-9 AM or 4-6 PM Mon-Fri. Theirs is 4-11 AM and 2-10 PM with weekends 11 AM to 8 PM. Outside those hours expect road closures due to the construction I mentioned.
Also, and finally, speaking of construction - they will close 3 lanes on those tollways (yes, most are toll) DURING rush hour to dig a hole.

Jason Foster When I came back to the Miami area and found out I actually CAN get somewhere in SLOW (not stopped) traffic was a delight. Also laughed as people think here is the worst (like they think Tampa is). Put those people in Chicago on a Monday afternoon at 6 PM (or a Sunday at 2 PM) and that should be a life changing opinion on what BAD TRAFFIC in a city IS.

Jason Foster I 90 in Chicago is the rated #1 bottleneck in the USA. DC area us like the 3rd or 4th. LA's 405 is number 2. Drive from Ohare to the downtown loop can be 90 to 110 minutes or more, a mere 11.5 miles. And on the weekends or "out of rush" hours it's still jammed both ways. And well after hours, say 11 PM, its closed due to road work. So yer still screwed.
