Currently in Valentine, Nebraska for the night. Tomorrow looks like big day from about my location and southward. Hopefully farther south and not in the sandhills. I'll adjust my target tomorrow morning accordingly.

These cops don't care and will get your speed at the bottom of a hill...

...Be advised that they ARE OUT there and strictly enforcing the speed limits (even just 10 over) in the sandhills area (SR 97, Highways 84 / 183, etc) and are NOT giving warnings!

Thin rope last night (May 29) near Waynoks, Oklahoma.

Posted: May 30, 2018, 6:03 AM

Looks like a brief tornado from the storm near Waynoka, Oklahoma near dusk late on May 29. Yesterday. There was this cone and another thin rope northeast of it! HP supercell storm.

Chris Collura commented on Doug Crisp's post.

Clearly an example of where the winds are in a tornado! Do not focus on the actual condensation as the winds extend well beyond that! Remember air is invisible.

Posted: May 28, 2018, 5:41 AM

It's much lighter with 255 HP supercharged. That was a beast. But the maintenance nightmares forced me to get rid of it (warranty screwed me).

Posted: May 28, 2018, 5:37 AM

Chris Collura commented on Sea-Doo's video.

I was into this sport (PWC and owned 4 SeaDoos from 1990 through 2000, and again 2009 to 2015) for many years.

Unfortunately I gave up the sport in 2015 after a long battle with an extended warranty on a GSX Limited (255 HP) in 2013. It was an extended "warranty" for 5 years and they denied paying for COVERED engine work.

Despite paying an extra $2,000 to extended the warranty, I still had to pay nearly $9,000 for a engine rebuild (the SeaDoo was garage kept, full maintenance and all) so it was a defect.

I sold it after that taking a loss. The sport was so much fun and sadly I had to leave it... Spending $15,000 on a SeaDoo and something breaking (hello, it's a machine!) and warranty not covering a bill more than half the sale price doesn't justify owning a SeaDoo or PWC anymore :-(

Posted: May 24, 2018, 12:29 PM

Chris Collura replied to James G. LaDue's comment.

This appears to be caused by both the pressure gradient across the lake and winds (kinda like a sieche in the great lakes or meteotsunami, just smaller).

Theoretically that wave would hit one side of the lake, then slosh back to the other side (smaller depending how well it was reflected) like a bathtub.

Posted: May 24, 2018, 6:19 AM

Chris Collura commented on iCyclone's photo.

Not what I needed to hear either ... After a dead tornado chase season after May 2 until now, finally we are getting a low pressure trough in the west and now God throws this "wrench" into the works. The problem is (like Cindy last year) that this will block moisture return into the central USA and hamper storm development east of the Rockies. I'm hoping this gets sheared apart before it clears the Yucatan and weakens.

Chris Novy Embarrassingly

Posted: May 22, 2018, 12:38 PM

Chris Collura commented on Thad Bowling's post.

May 19th was my cue to shove the next week or two on the shelf and wait this out (what I call a Colt Forney day)...

Started out over zealous and with with high expectations near Salina and Manhattan until I realized the dreaded morning convection (which turned a 2 hour drive into 4 hours of hydroplaning the night prior) killed that target with a cool pool.

Now what do we all do? You guessed it - blast south and TRY to intercept a tornado warned HP storm south of the KS / OK border - developing at 2 PM CDT (instead of 6 PM = should have been a hint right there).

Ofcourse we all get there and it evolves to a bow segment and starts moving east at 50 mph.

Managed to catch the storm (now yellow on radar instead of pink) and see 45 mph winds and pea sized hail.

It was wild... NOT! But this is the part of chasing we all deal with one time or another. Like fishing.

Posted: May 22, 2018, 9:29 AM

Chris Collura commented on iCyclone's photo.

Low center off Belize? That's like 500 miles west of where the convection is in that image. Way too early and this can hurt tornado chasing operations in the central USA due to blocking and lack of moisture return (example: Cindy last year).

Posted: May 22, 2018, 9:26 AM

Chris Collura commented on Doug Crisp's post.

This is the only FUCKING news going on in the continental USA. I seriously rather see a town get hit by a tornado.

At least that wouldn't be MAN MADE. But with rex blocks and ridges, the only thing going on is these depressive scumbags / shooters.

Posted: May 22, 2018, 9:21 AM

Chris Collura is feeling depressed.

May 22 was (note the big word here: "WAS") what I call "tornado day". The past 10 years I was chasing today...

... NOT today.

This is the first time I've seen a dead pattern on this day in a very long time. It's sad.

Looking at the GFS is even sadder. Watching rex blocks and cutoff lows come ashore over California and just stall over the great basin ... only to eject after they completely fade or fill in.

Meanwhile on here there's anniversary posts (and maybe some cat pictures). Pathetic.

Wow never knew that. Maybe a rolling roadblock then.

Such would look like this one where 2 truckers go very slow like that and it doesn't appear to be a pass.

What we are upset about is when a truck does pass another one but immediately cuts left in front of fast moving left lane traffic, causing them to slam the brakes and follow closely - Which is dangerous.

The pass takes long (like a minute or two). I've seen some people pass the truck that did it ON THE RIGHT and actually make it through the rapidly closing gap - So risky.

This was the scene on I 70 earlier between Oakley and Quinter, Kansas. At first I thought there was an accident or truck overturned but NOPE ... A traffic jam almost a mile long causes by dozens of cars and trucks under an overpass! This is not only down right foolish, but the entire lanes on both sides were BLOCKED because of this! At least leave a lane open - What if emergency or police had to get through? THINK !!!Do NOT seek shelter under overpasses!

Suddenly pulling left and causing people to slam brakes is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS period. These truckers suddenly pull left and pass 1 mph faster over a long distance and seem to not care about the 50 cars flipping them off to his or her left after the pass is complete and truck goes back to right. Someone could be KILLED.

George Kourounis was doing this for years and even he isn't in Hawaii ... There's a reason for that.

Imagine a tornado going though an empty field, versus hitting a large city (God forbid), the latter will not only be destruction and roads blocked, but you'll have to deal with authorities, cops, road blocks, civil issues, etc.

Chris Collura commented on Skip Talbot's photo.

Great write up Skip Talbot. And I'm so grateful I wasnt suckered south either - I had my car POINTED south and a little voice told me "stick to your original target", as well as what you mentioned about the capping there. Many chasers, some big ones too, made that fateful decision, and saw just an LP storm downscale to nothing.

By the way, the hail was more than 3 inches north of Hoisington on that storm when it tried to wrap up there. Needless to say those hail guards worked like a champ. One gaping dent in the meshing directly over my windshield. Nice save!

Yeah I should say SPC is taking a break too.

Those hail guards sure came into good use on May 1 northeast of Hoisington KS on the earlier stages of the same supercell that neared Tescott later on. Looks like a GOOD SAVE for the windshield as one such "impactor" (3+ inches) dented the grill itself! Sure beats glass in my eyes and mouth!

Wow ... Speaking on 'The Lord taketh away'. Garbage-vection effectively destroyed any Oklahoma chasing today. So the target is about 8 to 10 hours away near KC.

Looks like after that I'll be sitting out some down time near Chicago. The next "wave" is somewhere over Asia now. Congrats to all chasers who were successful the past few days.

You sound like "the way I was" in early June 2015. Don't jinx it!!!

Get out there and break your "gap" in tornadoes - They're like women - You never know.

Being down is only gonna get you traffic cones (the BAD "cones") and pilot cars.
