Yeah I will. No gridlock traffic either where you're "brake lighted" just when you're close enough to see the storm details. Sick of this traffic here.

Then traffic starts moving ONCE the storm of offshore and you missed it all.

So discouraged and never chased south Florida since the 90s. Not worth cardiac diseases and baldness.

Finally getting my gear and vehicle together to be out there for this. I was going to leave the Wednesday before last but didn't. Held off for this. Probably leaving Florida in the Saturday / Sunday time frame to be out in Central USA in time for this. Thanks god.

Also Tuesday most likely will NOT be the only day, but the first day in a multiday severe weather event.

If this is a hairline crack you might be able to FlexSeal it. Or even fill the crack itself with heavy duty sealant (not silicone but the Goop sealant, which is waterproof). Another is to fill the crack by dabbing it with 5 minute epoxy.

To replace the elbow itsrlf ... Maybe dremel the flanges of the elbow off using a cutting wheel for the dremel, cut them carefully lengthwise (parallell to the flow /pipe) but not into the part that's not the elbow. Then get a large flat head screwdriver to get the flange loose.

After you get the elbow off, simply slip on a new one after cleaning it with PVC primer and then PVC cement.

Posted: Apr 21, 2018, 5:45 AM

Chris Collura replied to Tim Millar's comment.

Tim Millar One theory was a bird strike at low altitude that cracked or weakened the blade, which later failed higher up later on with the temperature changes.

I used to work at an aircraft metal supplier and every single tube, pipe, blade, sheet, and part went through a "test reports" system. It kept a detailed log of the exact metallurgical analysis of the part, its inspection, ultrasonic / x-ray, all that. One was tracing the rotor disk that caused an engine failure in the 80s and subsequent crash landing in Sioux City.

Posted: Apr 21, 2018, 5:39 AM

Chris Collura replied to John Moore's comment.

I'm thinking the blade or debris was blown back aft toward the window by the relative wind (air moving past the airliner at 500+ mph).

Sort of like throwing a baseball from one car to another next to you at 70 mph, with someone trying to catch it. You aim for the open window, throwing hard, and it hits the back of the car instead because the relative wind at 70 mph.

Posted: Apr 21, 2018, 5:35 AM

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's post.

The CFM-56 engine has a ring to TRY to contain such fragments. With the tangential velocity (tip speed) of these fan blades (~750 MPH), releasing one flings it out with a velocity similar to a small handgun. So they are re evaluating that containment ring.

Also, note the front of the engine, and where the fan is (or was). Now look at the window that was hit. It's way back and no where near the fans "plane of rotation". Maybe debris flew out of the front of the engine (or side), missing the containment ring, and hit the 525 MPH relative wind blast and in that fleeting instant wound up 20 or 30 feet BEHIND where the fan is, taking out the window (?)

No road rage, no push and shove, barely even a stop light (the only thing to worry about is work zones). Small towns here and there with tons of inconspicuous history to learn if look in detail enough. This is very "theraputic".

Actually had a nightmare last night of being on a school bus trying to get out of a fire storm while looking at a "downgrade from a MDT risk to marginal" on SPCs site. Somehow the fire skipped over the bus and spared me and the kids.

As nightmarish as this was, a similar scenario is playing out there in real life due to the lack of rain and tinder dry grass.

Stay safe out there, and keep up the good work.

Good luck and glad to see you're back. Years ago I pursued meteorology and realized even back then the opportunities were in the IT fields (back in the 90s it was called "data processing"). I switched my goals and majors early in college to Computer Science as well. Fortunately I left the "meteorology" as a side hobby in the form of storm chasing (I didn't wanna be stuck poorly paid at a studio or behind a desk anyway with my job future in question). I think you made a very good choice. Good luck.

They actually have layers of kevlar and resin built into the engine cowlings to TRY to contain these type of failures. Most of the time it works. This time shrapnel - Traveling at transonic speeds (about the bullet speed of a small handgun) - out and unfortunately into a window. I can only imagine the explosive decompression of this happened at high altitude.

Most failures like this happen during climbing and takeoff when mechanical / thermal stresses are the greatest.

This was both a catastrophic and UN CONTAINED engine failure.

Jamie Strickland, I see those red lines on power generation equipment / turbine power packs. They say "plane of rotation" and not to be in those areas as the units are spooling (running).

This could be what is called "target fixation". Looking at an object you're trying to avoid and hitting it instead as you panic.

I've seen skydivers landing under parachute and hitting obstacles (fences, power lines, flag poles) because they become so worried about hitting them and fixate to flying into them. Dont panic and look away and you'll avoid it.

In this case not panicking and stopping would have avoided being hit.

Its these hand washing and rich snobs that need to stop being so over cautious. Our bodies are remarkable and designed to LEARN what bad pathogens we are exposed to.

The major issue I see is the forecasted meridonal flow and fast storm motions to the N and NNE.

A SW or WSW flow aloft would have made this a awesome setup. Allowing storms to ride along the warm front instead of rapidly jumping over it and becoming elevated.

A WSW flow aloft would make this a "Rochelle IL Apr 9 2015 type" setup.

This storm was a full-on supercell storm. Impressive by florida standards. I've seen the footage and it's definitely tornadic. My challange was rush hour and taking 30 minutes to go 5 miles. It's urban chasing and not the gridded OK or Kansas road network.

Each aircraft has a service and absolute 'ceiling'. It depends on the aircraft, fuel and weight loads, even the temperature and humidity.

The service ceiling is usually where the rate of climb is less than 100 feet a minute. The absolute ceiling is the maximum height where climb rate falls to zero.

The absolute ceiling on most of those helicopters there are a bit over 20,000 feet MSL.

IOTA ... 3 years ago today (4/9/2015) a violent tornado passed through Ogle county in northern Illinois passing by Rochelle and hitting Fairdale destroying the town and causing 2 deaths. In the image, looking north on Highway 251 in Rochelle, the supercell looks more like a storm in western Kansas, with amazing structure and the EF 4 wedge churning under it. The inset to the upper left is the dark ground scar taken a few days after from a PAC 750 skydive plane over-flying the area.

George Kourounis So you'll probably experience the basic onset of hypoxia and not any AMS. You'll basically be drunk without the bar nor alcohol taste in your mouth :-)

Posted: Apr 6, 2018, 7:54 AM

Chris Collura commented on George Kourounis's post.

We get that exact same effect on high altitude skydives. But without the long term effects. The scary feeling is at about 23,000 feet you disconnect from the aircraft oxygen system about a minute before you exit.

In this time you're checking your gear and gloves / helmet and exiting the plane. Almost immediately (10 secs or so) a weird "dryness" feeling and dizziness sets in. By the time you exit it feels like your flat out "drunk". It sets in very quickly.

But in my case, after 20 or 30 secs of free fall, you've fallen into the denser air and it's like a "caffeine wake up". Hypoxia is nothing to mess with.

Be careful (but at just under 18k or 6km, or 500 mb height, you should be fine). Just don't move around too much.

I've felt it after being at 14,000 MSL in the Rockies. Nausea, headache, general malaise, heart pounding, dehydration. And that's mild compared to up where you're at. And physical condition doesn't matter. You're "super" but you're not "superman" :)

It's actually worse than the flu. The malaise and fever / aches is there PLUS puking and diarrhea (even until you just poop mucus but you feel like you havent crapped in a week - every 15 minutes) ... Absolutely AWEFUL.

This WILL run its course. You need to drink plenty of fluids and electrolytes (such as Gatorade lite) in between water.

No solid foods either... but you probably want have any appetite anyways.
