This is the front of the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, right after the storm, during the late evening of September 20. This hotel was a "saving grace" for myself, and a "base" for meeting up with three other storm chasers: Brett Adair, Caleb Elliott, and Branden Clement. These folks were nice enough to let me stay with them until we got out of Puerto Rico. The debris (glass and roofing tile fragments) is littering the front entrance, but power is on thanks to generators. Food and water were available to guests in this hotel (while they lasted), along with security.Place: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)Address: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)

One of the long lines at the San Juan (Luis Muñoz Marín) international airport on September 24. There was absolutely NO online or booking - You just had to show up, and WAIT for many hours (in deplorable smell, heat, and humidity), and HOPE you got on an un-scheduled humanitarian flight out of there.Place: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)Address: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)

This was while leaving San Juan (Luis Muñoz Marín) international airport on September 24 via a long-awaited humanitarian flight to New York / New Jersey. Here is a group of storm chasers eating at a restaurant (with power and most importantly internet) on September 23. From left to right: Josh Morgerman (iCyclone), @[26519264:2048:Brett Adair] (Weather Nation), @[100003314564319:2048:Brandon Clement], and Caleb Elliott. A small pizza at this place costed at least $25, at another Meditarranean restaurant nearby, 4 chicken platters with rice costed nearly $200! As gas became unavailable, it was bartered and sold (sometimes by cartels) for 4 to 5 times the regular price, even siphoned from boats.Place: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)Address: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)

These are two images showing hurricane Maria as it was approaching Puerto Rico on September 19-20, 2017. The left image is a visible satellite image as the hurricane moving between the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico as a category 5 hurricane. To the right is the San Juan radar site's base-reflectivity image of the concentric eyewalls approaching. This radar site will subsequently be destroyed as the storm crossed Puerto Rico on the 20th. This is a view of Highway 1, a major route through Caguas, Puerto Rico, as the winds and rain from Hurricane Maria was winding down during the morning of September 20, 2017. Not only were the 150+ MPH wind gusts bad enough, but flash flooding also became catastrophic, with between 35 and 40 inches of rain falling in this area alone. Puerto Rico face a long and daunting recovery, with power out for at least 6 months in some places, and flooding / wind damage of catastrophic proportions.Place: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)Address: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)

With a developing humanitarian crisis, and no places to get fuel, gas lines became literally MILES long. This one is near Luquillo, Puerto Rico during a failed attempt to make it towards Fajardo to meet the US Coast Guard. Trust me ... American Airlines was being as "American Airlines" as you can get today. They booked and confirmed 5 flights and then cancelled all of them leaving crowds of people whimpering at the airport.

We tried to get out on United on a humanitarian relief flight but they used a tiny 737-200, and it filled up. We missed it by 9 people in front of us, thanks to getting lost (that 15 minutes made or breaked it) looking all over for Dollar rental place returns since all the phones died. It was NOT on the airport.

I had the route in and straight to it in Google maps then tried to scrub over to see the destination and right then the phone froze up and had to be restarted.

No signal after that. We left the car at Thrifty and that 15 to 20 minutes later, plus being directed to the wrong lines, caused us to miss that flight.

In the meantime my ticketed and confirmed flight on Monday the 25th was "rebooked until the 29th", again, because the flight had one of its legs flown by American Airlines (St Thomas to Charlotte).

F'ck you Murphy.

Shitty. The combination of Murphy's law, Dollar Rent a Car's lost off airport location, and 9 people ahead of us ruined that.

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Yes Mike Theiss. When I booked it I never thought about it. Unable to find the stupid place we turned around and left it at Thrifty saying "FukIt". Had this not happened all three of us would be in Newark right now.

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Most of them. We got there around noon and waited in the line for the humanitarian flight to Newark (United). As luck would have it the 9 people ahead of us were the last on. Problems bringing the car rental back lost us 20 minutes. Note to Dollar rent a car: HAVE YOUR FACILITY next to you're friends at THRIFTY ON the airport. Not a mile away off the airport in some unnamed road!!!

Pretty much stuck here travel wise after some false hope yesterday thinking I was getting out on the 24th, and it was cancelled minutes after booking it.First of all, I'm in good shape here. I'm in a hotel with power, food, water, and such. And with a few great storm chasers who were nice enough to let me stay with them.Pretty much trying anything now to get back to Miami. American cancelled flights through the 27th yet @[1097081336:2048:Mike Theiss] made it back to Miami last night on American (???) ... So obviously things are weird.I got a flight back to Miami for the 25th, via a puddle jumper out of San Juan to St Thomas. If that goes, it's American from there to Charlotte then Miami. In the meantime I'll keep checking the airport for any unscheduled or standby flights. Meanwhile we have a room with Ocean view...Place: Condado Vanderbilt Hotel (18.458695979546, -66.0757816065) Address: 1055 Ashford Ave., 00907 San Juan, Puerto Rico

Right now I'm between IT jobs. The worst thing is that I'll probably miss a birthday dinner (for me on the 24th). I'm staying at a hotel that had damage but generator power and was able to bunk in with 2 other folks there for almost nothing. I do NOT recommend hurricane / typhoon chasing on an island (like Bermuda, Taiwan, PR, etc) ... Hell, I don't recommend chasing these storm's at ALL to those who don't have extensive experience. An island chase like this opens up a whole new realm of problems.

Glad you're OK. I was looking in Huracao but didn't see many places like parking garages to ride it out in (there was a parking structure but it was gated and didn't look all that safe). I decided to head 10 miles or so up the road to Caguas, and found a robust structure there. Also, Huracao I was expecting the storm eye before sunrise. I wasn't in the mood to see 175 MPH in darkness. You got pretty much the same I got. Maybe 5 MPH more. This storm was nothing to mess with. After many hours picking my way through debris and flooding, I managed to make it back to San Juan and a hotel with power!

The coast there is basically small shanty towns and mountainous rain forest. In fact, heading towards Huracao near dusk yesterday a roof and tree / power line nearly blocked me on the mountain on highway 3. And this was BEFORE the TS forced winds hit (mainly feeder bands). Scared the crap out if me, but after a few tries and fender dings, I made it out of there. Huracao didn't have many options like parking garages (one was near a hospital but was locked down tight). I backed off to Caguas. Right now the winds are tropical storm forced. Not in the eyewall for few more hours.

The chase / interception area in SW Florida (where major observations were done) is denoted by the small white box. In the main image, the path of storm storm core and eye is denoted by the yellow swath. These are two annotated images showing hurricane Irma as it made its final approach and landfall in the Florida Keys and into southwest Florida. The left image is a visible satellite image as the hurricane moving along the northern Cuban coast as a borderline category 5 hurricane late on September 9. The yellow arrow shows how the storm was to turn north, cross the lower Florida Keys, and move into the southwest Florida coast. To the right is a radar image (reflectivity) as the hurricane core was approaching Marco Island with winds at least 130 MPH. The eyewall is slightly eroded on the south side due to some dry air drawn into the "moat" region between the concentric eyewalls. The northern eyewall is where there is violent rain and also contains all the wind dynamics. The convective "chimney" of the storms right-front eyewall is the red region. To the north of the calm eye and hurricane core, numerous chasers (from Spotter Network) appear in Marco Island as red dots. Posted: Sep 7, 2017, 5:04 AM

Chris Collura updated his status.

Track of hurricane Irma shows a catastrophic path right up the populated southeast portions of South Florida from Miami to Palm Beach from Sunday morning through the afternoon.

Given that this verifies, how strong will it be?

Probably not the dreaded 185 mph cat 5, but a "weaker" 145 to 150 MPH. Still very bad.

On Thursday the storm is tracking north of Hispaniola and there's 10,000 foot mountains there. This downslope flow may push a small amount if dry air into the system. Also, an eyewall replacement cycle is taking place. This may cause "slight" weakening to some extent.

The storm may wobble though, and that doesn't mean a trend unless it's consistent.

The storm otherwise will remain over warm water with low shear until late Sunday, where it will probably hit Florida (after crossing the still warmer Gulf Stream).

This is true hurricane perfection ... Irma at category 5 strength with sustained winds of 175 MPH with 220+ MPH gusts. Basically like an EF-5 tornado (a big one) if it hits the British Virgin Islands like this.If this continues to Florida like this it would make Andrew in 1992 look like a big fart. At this point, the storm was disorganized and sheared, with 45 to 50 MPH winds, but still producing catastrophic flooding over eastern Texas / Houston during its departure.Place: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)Address: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)

I evacuated Houston the night before, and returned the rental car and flew out of Dallas, which was dry and unaffected by Harvey's wet "wrath". This is a terrifying view of I-45 northbound near Spring, Texas late on August 28th with raging flood waters rising and going from left (the southbound lanes) to right (my northbound lanes) and spilling over the centre median barrier. The water level to the left of the barrier is high and over-topping the 4 foot barrier. This is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS attempt to go north and get out of the Houston area. On my side, the water is about 6 inches deep, but swiftly rushing across the lanes. An overflowing dam caused this part of the violent flood in the area.Place: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)Address: Taken at Various Locations (Mainly Central USA)

Surging and fast-moving flood waters overspilling the Buffalo Bayou near Shepherd Drive west of Houston during the evening of August 28th.
