Also Katrina weakened from a strong category 5 to a 3 at landfall. The wave setup and surge was already well established, which continued ashore.

Harvey (like Charley in 2004) was intensifying rapidly and smaller. Category 2 to 4 rapidly, so lack of duration for wave and surge setup.

I'm safely evacuated to Dallas. Returning car there and flying out of there 8/29 in the morning. Water was rising again leaving Houston earlier so I decided to leave this evening (8/28).This was water literally spilling over the median barrier from left (southbound) to right (my northbound) lanes of I-45 north of Houston near Spring, Texas. Note to the left the water is over topping the median wall and jetting through the cracks.Place: Spring, Texas (30.0541, -95.387) Address: Spring, Texas 77373, 77379, 77389, 77388, 77386

My combination of TV and Internet went from $138 to $146 a month in 2012 right after they (Comcast) yanked two of my favorite channels (one I was watching my favorite show that just "went off").

In a rage, I returned the box, cancelled everything except the Internet ... $38 a month for a year, $69 after. Much better with the HD antenna providing the local channels.

It was humorous bringing the box back. The lady surrounded by returned boxes and an hour wait (take a number and all). The pile of boxes with plugs bent as if it was yanked from the wall before they returned it. I guess the rate hikes pissed off "a few" other people too (?)

Avoid some areas on 75 south out of Atlanta and near Macon. And it's NOT post eclipse related traffic. They're shoving 3 lanes into one in areas 10 miles apart (20-30 min delay per segment). All construction related.

Right now my eclipse "chase" appears to be heading to the NW side of Atlanta by Sunday afternoon. No problem booking any hotel there. Then on the 21st head north to the southern Appalachians in either Tennessee or Kentucky. Cloud cover may be an issue farther NW into places like S Illinois. Totality will be around 2:35 in my area. This is still flexible and subject to change. The picture is from the 2012 annular eclipse in New Mexico just before total annularity. This one will be a total eclipse (not annular) where the moon is closer and sun completely covered.

You're very lucky to be in LA. Asia, although far, is easy along with Mexico since that's almost your back yard. And being in California paid off.

As for the Atlantic (I'm in Florida) don't even bother. For you it's March. Imagine the wasted muscles I FEEL?

WILMA was my last MAJOR hurricane. Yes, 12 (Twelve) years ago almost. Work and other things prevented me from getting to California to live. Stinks.

Basically a whole body dose of such a high level or radiation KILLS all your DNA and stem cells (from ionizing and chemically altering them). You're a dead person walking from that point on.

Your skin is replaced by new cells every day or so. Since the stem cells are gone, that STOPS happening. So in about a week, you still have your old skin rotting off, and when that's gone, it doesn't come back.

Thereafter, other parts of the body, such as muscle, also replaced and refreshed naturally but at different time scales (muscles every month, blood 90 days, etc) ... So those organs and tissues fail and rot away at different times.

Brain and nerve cells are the longest lasting (years before being replaced), so unfortunately at the time scales of other systems failing in ARS (acute radiation syndrome) ... You'll feel it. All of it.

All the while there's NO immune system, not any way to fight infection. With no skin to protect the body, fluid loss and sepsis is normally the cause of death. Usually 30 to 60 days after the radiation flash. Sometimes 80 days with extreme medical support.

Ouchi probably felt immediate effects after the criticality. Probably headache, dizzy, fainting, nausea, and a burning or hot sensation like a sunburn.

Beleive it or not - After that, maybe for a day or two, he actually would feel better. Even walking and talking, much like recovering from cold or flu --However, the DNA / stem cell damage is already done ... And this temporary phase of well being is known as the "dead man walking" or "ghost phase".

After this period of false wellness, the windfall into an inevitable (and slow) horrific death begins with skin rashes and sickness that just keeps getting worse and worse until you are basically a "living skeleton" like in that picture.

Danglian (a worker on the "demon core" in the 1940s) actually continued "working" after a fatal radiation dose, and noted the dismay of his body as the unthinkable unfolded. He was a scientist and little was known of these effects.

I am horrified to hear that they kept Ouchi alive just to see the effects ... but I hope they at least learned what they can or can not do for such a radiation victim. If someone wants to be relieved of their suffering ... Jeez, let it end. There's nothing anyone could have done (obviously) :/

It sure is.

Look at the Atlantic hurricane season. No major hurricane hitting USA since Wilma in 2005. Who would imagine?

Once again ... As we enter August, it appears the hurricane season will be quite dry and quiet (for now at least)!"How dry I am, how dry I am. It's plain to see just why I am. No alcohol in my highball. And that is why so dry I am. Waiter, Waiter."

Awesome view. You were to the south of a mid level Canadian ridge of high pressure, so yes, that would cause a tailwind (easterly component).

I love all these crazy eye sizes. I compare the proportions to everyday objects...

For example (assuming a 10 nm mile high eyewall), a 25 nm mile wide eye is like a stadium or "teacup".

Tiny eyes (like Charley in 2004, Wilma in 2005, or Forrest in the 80s) at 3nm wide are more like the inside of a toilet paper or even paper towel roll (aka "pinhole" eyes).

This one (Noru) and others such as Isabel in 2003 or Frances in 2004, with 70nm wide eyes are akin to an "ashtray" or frying pan!

Looking at a cluster of storms east of Florida from an airplane at 39,000 feet. These are associated with tropical storm (now a depression) Emily interacting with a low pressure trough. The towering cumulonimbus in the image center is approaching 60,000 feet.

Wow ... Dagmar Kress, What's the best cruise speed and altitude for that type of trip?

What's good about living in south Florida is that it's never hard to find your gate at any airport if you're flying there!

Glad I wasn't chasing that garbage. So sick of hearing the "shear and dry air" song since 2006.

Rather go to Disney World and hear "It's a Small World after All..." (gimme a drill for my head)!
