Tropical storm Emily is making landfall in the Tampa Bay area this morning with 45 MPH winds (a minimal tropical storm). The biggest threat will be heavy rains, extending well to the east of this highly sheared system. I am not chasing this.

Orographic shearing?

Very interesting.

Posted: Jul 29, 2017, 6:14 AM

Chris Collura commented on iCyclone's photo.

I'm thinking a "barrier jet" effect. Air pushes against mountains, strong wind sets up aloft, but "cushion" effect develops down low, and kinda "pushes back", like water running off a curved surface.

I think this effect, which is extremely complex fluid dynamics, can move an entire system.

I remember you were IN an eyewall there and you had light and variable winds (under the storm core) as if the mountains created a burble (like behind a big truck on the highway). And the storm just jumped north.

This dynamic probably has been studied little. I wonder if the Taiwanese there know where to build and not to on the windward coasts. Maybe using many hundreds of years of statistics / history.

Chris Collura commented on Cheryl Schumacher Chang's post.

On am online dating app I was asked to send a photo and was given that same BS, being called fat, and my age came down on me as well, and I was not only humiliated and dissed, but immediately blocked. I was so hurt.

I'm 5'7", 175 lbs, solid chest, 33" waist. So not sure where the 'fat' came from. I know I look horrible in a picture (lense aberration) so that don't help. OR it was just an insult maybe. But it hurt, and to the bone.

When I was a kid I made a joke in front of my dad at my mom. I said "mom's fat leg" ... She was 5'6", 120 lbs. Just was the angle she was sitting at ... Well said. My dad jumped up and belted me so hard, saying "mom's NOT fat, now say you're sorry!"

My sad grabbed me and stood me up in front of my mom as I apologized on command. Then she slapped me. And, I was grounded for a week. That was around July of 1982.

People these days as kids have absolutely no manners (unlike me especially, learning them in a strict and stern manner)! They grow up to still be rude, hurting, superficial, and ageist. It's disgraceful.

After my rejection on the online dating site, I was doubly hurt because of such lack of manners. I hope the girl in that picture was taught right not to do that again.

The GFS has played something like this in the Atlantic for months ... but always more than 240 hours away (aka "dreamcasting") and nothing happens ... Amazing how it almost always verifies in the Pacific Ocean though.

This is a MAJOR pet peeve for me too.

Almost a dozen times I had trucks do this (especially on I 70).

The thing is half the time there was actually plenty of space to pass the truck (who CUT me and 4 others behind me) on the right since the "gap" was still 150 feet wide and closing at, as Eric Treece said, 0.1 MPH!

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's post.

I'm going to make the drive a day prior from Florida to S IL. Once there I'll decide last minute on weather details.

Airfares to Chicago are dirt cheap ($60 each way) but the gars are like $75 to $100 (rental) per day. I find that stupid and rediculous.

The problem with flying there, outside obsurd price gouging on car rentals (this is nothing to do with the eclipse, but as its summer), is the "comittment" to a location, only to get bad weather and not enough buffer to drive into clear skies.

Ofcourse my option is that I got time off due to slow IT work.

Also - In the highly unlikely event an Atlantic hurricane is hitting the USA, I'll be able to work with that.

The storm season in the USA is done pretty much for big tornadoes (sticking a fork in it), unless you like outflow MCS shelf cloud type setups in NW flow aloft. The jet stream is in southern Canada and that's the place to be in July.

AND recurving from *such* a low latitude too which is intetesting.

Either an early season pattern or signs of a "protecting" and persistent trough off the eastern USA.

Chaserdudes = hate it.

"Most people" who live near water = Enjoying the 11th year without a major hurricane hitting the US mainland.

Yeah but you still lose a days work going to court. Bigger lines to wait in there too!

Just have a buddy stand by the car or pay online.

Chris Collura replied to Charles Edwards's comment.

That's funny!

In this case it was wise to have a friend wait at you're car as you did the line...

...So he or she could explain to the patrol (morons) what was going on.

Lol

Agreed... Not a bad line to wait in, ey?

Chris Collura replied to Doug Kiesling's comment.

Exactly ... Just sucks for those waiting in that line getting a ticket for "being honest".

Also that was just one pay box for the entire lot.

I saw 3 (yes THREE) people in this long line (waiting to pay for parking) get a parking ticket......Simply because they didn't have the payment from the pay machine ON their dashboard WHILE they were in this line.Where did human "common sense" go?

And no major hurricane striking the United States in 11+ years...

Looks like that material they use at golf driving ranges.

I wonder how FAR that was carried?
