No tornadoes today ... And for quite a WHILE (unfortunately).Like a dead hurricane season ... Let's rub it in with anniversary posts!

Chris Collura replied to Dalton Do's comment.

Yeah and they do away with the most popular tenant there. Doesn't make sense. MD often had a line snaking around the corner, obviously they were making good money and good business.

Yet there were other restaurants that hardly ever had any business, and they're still there. I don't get it.

Looks like a dumb decision at corporate to me.

Posted: May 31, 2017, 5:33 AM

Chris Collura replied to Scott Weberpal's comment.

Probably a financial decision without a doubt. But what about those places next to the former Mc Donald's that were always empty, few customers? You'd think the booming business the MD was doing they can afford the rent, and CC an have his damn nuggets.

At Midway airport ... Always craved chicken Mc Nuggets at Mc Donald's here for many many years when traveling through here...

...Today the golden arches are gone, and the space in the wall (where Mc Donald's was) is covered with plywood and a super expensive sandwich shop in front (with NO ONE in line).

The Mc Donald's here often had line with 30 people in it -at least. It was popular. So why did they remove it?

I asked and was told it was a corporate decision.

My reply was "Well that's stoopid ... And I won't eat a single chicken nugget again from Mc Donald's" ... They sighed, and told me they can't sell their (expensive "gourmet wraps") sandwiches because no one likes them and they're "super pissed" because "the Mc Donald's WAS here".

Amazing to see the other half dozen places around the former Mc Donald's still there -with no customers. I guess what "Christopher Collura LIKES" is what the plug is always PULLED on FIRST?

F'CK YOU, Murphey....

That picture is absolutely bad ass! So cool running into you folks... that's what makes storm chasing so fun!

Posted: May 29, 2017, 9:15 PM

Chris Collura replied to Damen Winslow's comment.

Lol ... I've done that...

... The moment they just cut me off and I slam on the brakes (in left lane) there actually is ample time to accelerate and pass on the right, shooting the "gap" (the 100+ foot gap closing less than 12 inches per second) and make the pass.

One of these days I'm gonna do this and "brake check" them if no one else is behind the truck.

Another MDT / High risk type day failed so many chasers. By late afternoon - Seeing most of Oklahoma in SW surface winds and the outflow boundary to the north surging south, I know I would be lucky to JUST see supercells. I was on the one northwest of Tulsa (near Pawhuska) which was quite intense for a while, with 2" hail.

Getting a good tan today up here in N/C to NE Oklahoma. Winds veering to SW. If nothing happens in the next few hours ... Get a baseball cap saying "WOAGSU" (waste of a good setup) :/

But if the cap does break, as MCD 873 depicts, explosive supercell growth will ensue.

Anyone know what all those "popcorn" type radar echoes that have been streaming over OKC for hours (elevated EML aloft?)

Frightening view of the edge of the tornado in the rain headed towards Elk City on May 16 looking east (on 152) in at least 3" hail and winds gusting over 100 MPH. A bit close for comfort as we watched a building lose its roof and debris flying right next to us!Crazy and very busy day to day chasing. Derek Sibley and I were on 3 major supercell storms, the first with a funnel / small tornado northwest of Perryton. Texas ... Then shifted south catching rain-wrapped tornado that went south of Wheeler, Texas ... Then finally the Elk City storm. Missed the Mclean one as we were a bit north for the first round of storms. Hope everyone stayed safe out there.

Do you directly connect to the battery and not in vehicle outlet (cig lughter)?

I pack a heavy duty cable I clamp to the battery, has its own 60A fusing, and route it into the car, where it attaches to the inverter and heavy duty 12v outlet, HAM radio, etc.

Designed it for rentals using 8 Guage low voltage lighting cable years back.

Reminds me of my previous order for my Samsung S8. I was supposed to pick it up by the 30th. I called them, got "Cynthia" (after being on hold for 15 seconds) and she promised to make it available for pickup May 6 and before. So I booked tickets to FL May 3.

Yesterday they said the order was cancelled. I called, and after being put on hold, disconnected, hung up on for almost an hour --I finally got someone there with a "pulse".

Asked for Cynthia and "I'm sorry, Cynthia was terminated last week..."

Then they told me my order was cancelled on the 30th of April and cannot be re-instated by another guy (ofcourse not knowing any of Cynthia's efforts to help me, not even the note she left to explicitly HOLD the order until May 6)!

I told them to go to hell. Screw Best Buy. DO YOUR JOB. I did mine!

Then looking over my monthly AT&T bill, there it is, the fees, activations, all the charges were all there as if I had the new phone.

Get some lube and USE IT to gently pull that huge head of yours OUT of your ass...

Going through my footage I believe this is a view of the EF-4 looking WSW from Tundra, Texas (between Eustace and Canton) at roughly 6 PM CDT. The left edge of the tornado is just left of the center of the picture. You can see the right side because of the rain wrap and the hill / trees.

Chris Collura replied to Tim Marshall's comment.

Hey Tim Marshall ... I just posted my analysis in this thread and agree this event was more mesoscale induced and nearly impossible to forecast.

Much like Indiana and Ohio back in mid August (the 16th I think) last year in 2016 where a tornado outbreak occurred and there wasn't even an SPC outlook area.

Posted: May 1, 2017, 7:01 PM

Chris Collura commented on Tim Marshall's photo.

Good day all, and Tim Marshall too. I am thinking the morning MCS in western Louisiana pretty much filled in the missing ingredients for such a powerful supercell cluster.

Basically when those storms dissipated by late morning, it created a shallow cool pool, and a large outflow boundary that spread out in all directions.

After intercepting the Canton tornado I went back and looked over the visible satellite loop, and the western part of the outflow from the LA storms did indeed reach east central Texas by about 5 PM CDT.

The environment without this boundary would have been characterized by south winds, temps near 90, and a dewpoint in the upper 60s. The Pacific cold front would have surged east, and a squall line would have been the result.

Now, with this westward propagating outflow, now well mixed and modified (shallow layer heated), brought SE flow (even ESE) and stronger low level winds (below 1 km), with temps near 80 deg and a dewpoint in the mid 70s! I saw 82 over 76 on one station on surface obs.

Jeez ... All we need is palm trees, Miami music, and paper umbrellas in a tall drink!

Plus the 5000÷ CAPE bullseye, erofing cap, more mixing, and a large area of initiation (storms began as a cluster of convective showers at first over a wide area) as the front to the west slowed down (maybe in response to the outflow coming in from the east (?)

There was basically no way to forecast this. It only looked encouraging an hour or two before the event, and only those who tried to be near that area (ahead of the front and surface low) and waited / were in range could have been there to see the tornadoes.

If you decided not to chase this ... Its because it DIDN'T LOOK GOOD at all. I was laughing at the setup and even posting on here dissing all the negatives, before heading out from SW Oklahoma to east Texas and expecting to only see marginally severe winds or small hail!

This is why if you're out chasing, you go. I'd rather be there and something not happen than not be there at all.

Definitely a tricky forecast to say the least. Congratulations to everyone who saw this unique (but tragic) event.
