Thanks ... It was a difficult forecast to say the least. Definitely one of the most rewarding chases. Hard work, 2 days or boredom, then 2 minutes of sheer terror!

This was the scene to the south of Canton, Texas during the evening of April 29, 2017 ... Massive and violent wedge tornado tearing across the landscape. Unfortunately damage, injuries, and deaths occurred with this tornado. Be aware that all it takes is a supercell storm to form under the right parameters to become more violent than expected! Always have a tornado plan.

Witnesses "tornado fog" today prior to violent tornado genesis south of Canton, Texas.

Basically dead calm, moist, and warm conditions inside the "bears cage". Then this eerie layer of fog forms close to the ground, suddenly appearing (and my ears feel the pressure).

Never seen that before. Must be the dramatic drop in pressure as the tornado cyclone moves overhead. We learn more and more with each chase.

Chris Collura replied to Phil Polito's comment.

I cringed thinking anyone inside that wedge would have experienced. This was ground / chest shaking and ears popping type of tornado insanity.

Posted: Apr 29, 2017, 8:19 PM

Chris Collura replied to Tony Mesias's comment.

Yeah that's an example of how stuff balances out. What was insane was the air "feeding" into that system ... 5000+ CAPE, ESE winds, temps mid 80s (with dewpoint in mid 70s = palm trees, tall drinks, Miami, and paper umbrellas in the drinks come to mind)!

I saw the "bird fart" cells firing south of me when near Texarkana, so I went for it. Seeing energy like that come together was quite an experience.

When I ask for a NON SMOKING room that means smoke FREE!

That doesn't mean a smoking room - Nor a room that was smoked IN (I hope you enjoy your $250 fee)!

It's a disgusting habit that is running our health and comfort, and killing our loved ones. Jeez just QUIT or vape!

Spent over an hour trying to get a non smoking room (or one without a previous chain smoker in it, fine or not)!

Sucks when I arrange for a NON smoking room and the room smells like an ashtray. Smoking should be BANNED from inside altogether.

A few months ago they wanted to charge ME for the fees. It was a non smoking room that the last jackass lit up in. I couldn't sleep because if the allergens, then they wanted to charge me for smoking in there. I refused to pay, to the point they wanted to call the cops! But in the end I didn't owe nothing.

Miss you, mom...

The powerful supercell taking aim on the Atlanta area looks like it went HP and has weakened quite a bit into a line segment. But till don't let your guard down until it passes.A tornado WAS reported, but not from that storm, but one farther southwest earlier (circled) by Jenni Hughes, who looked like the only chaser on it!

The focus should NOT be only on the HP storm (circled in blue) ... IF I was chasing this event, I would try to focus on the more discrete storms popping up to the south ... Those are what you should be chasing!I am not liking the SW winds though (instead of S or SE) in that region.

I see many chasers almost inside couplets and debris balls on the radar overlay but none have actual tornado pictures (as of yet) ... If this stuff is rain wrapped all you'll see is a 160 MPH plus wind from the east shift to west while your car rolls and ears pop ... All with blinding rain and zero visibility the WHOLE time. Not a good chase day.

Upscale means evolution from discrete (isolated) supercells to a line or multicellular cluster of widespread storms (less favorable for good chasing).

I had tickets to Houston yesterday but cancelled them seeing the morning "crapfest".

Like Tim Marshall said, it's like finding a needle in a pine forest (the "pine forest" part is the truth!)

Also what forms will most likely be HP and / or in poor chase terrain. It would take luck picking the right cell and in the right place.

If this was W Texas or W OK / Kansas I'd be there.
