Jeez. Where do I start?

Only a week chasing but the footage and such is just unreal.

I think I'll get a highlight video mashed up by weeks end.

I shot everything from time lapses, hail, rainbows, and - ofcourse - lots of tornadoes!

Updating a full chase log that can be seen here as well (under construction) below...

I actually NEED a ridge now. I finally get my long put off dental work done (I was trying to get that done since early April) plus see family in Florida before mid June gets active.

It appears switching my chase week from this week to last was a wise "strategy" :)

I had traffic but it was not where I completely stopped nor couldn't cross the road. But yes on that "beacon" storm that was to be expected.

For the records, the worst chaser traffic EVER that I saw was May 19, 2010 (high risk day in Oklahoma).

Back here in Chicago after one hell-ov-a chase trip the past week. Unpacking my vehicle and I come across one of my removeable hail grills - Deeply dented by probably tennis ball to baseball sized hail! This was the hail grill protecting the front windshield, and all my "glass" is intact on my vehicle (the same cant be said for the hood and such)!

Heading back to Chicago this weekend after an extraordinary storm chase trip. About a week was all it took to see more photogenic tornadoes than some people see in 5 (or even 10) years. Both May 24 (Dodge City tornado-fest) and May 25 (violent wedge) will forever reinforce both my passion and respect for these amazing storms. Also it was a hoot running into all you great folks out there, on some of the best chaser convergences (more like a pre-chase party)!

Pretty much eyeing up central Kansas for a marginal chase day (like May 25 was also "marginal"). My car is fine after being winched out of a hidden ditch (water covering parking lot entrance to hotel last night). Got oil changed as well and time to hit the road soon. Video frame grab from the dash-cam looking east along Interstate 70 west of Chapman, Kansas. This is pretty much when the violent wedge tornado, with 70 MPH rain and hail wrap over me, was moving eastward skirting the south side of Chapman after being on the ground for at least 90 minutes, and after I drove 100 miles playing catch-up to this storm.

This was because the cyclic supercell would produce a new mesocyclone BEFORE the former one finishes, so there are two tornadoes, one from the first cycle, with the new one forming east of it on the second cycle. This is rare.

It's 1:30 AM at my hotel here in Wichita and the adrenaline is only starting to wear off now. So I'll sleep soon. What a day (5/24) to remember! Started with an awesome chaser convergence more fun than ChaserCon in many ways AND the trip north into Mineola and Dodge City, Kansas for tornado INSANITY. Witnessing this cyclic supercell go from a CU field through its many tornadoes, all the way to the end if it's life cycle puts this near the number one chase slot in all my chasing career. Posted: May 18, 2016, 9:22 AM

Not sure why and where this comes from ... But in a humorous sense I'll post it...Basically it's literally HALF the cost of an airfare from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale (SW Airlines) to fly half way around the world from Los Angeles to Tokyo (American Airlines)...Can anyone explain that?

One tough lesson: You're in an airplane and you gotta pee bad and you make the horrible (and dumb) decision to hold it in during the descent - THINKING you can pee when you get off the plane?

Don't do that.

If you do ... AND it NEVER fails ... Another airplane WILL be parked at your gate and you'll sit there (and this is after the jolt of landing insults your urge to go even more) on the taxi way (no one can get up there) for 20 to 30 minutes!

Third time ... I'll just remember to go BEFORE the descent. LOL!

In this image ... Both the visible satellite and radar image (base reflectivity) is shown for the violent tornadic supercell that occurred north of Sulphur, Oklahoma during the afternoon of May 9.The impressive radar presentation (right image) of this storm shows an extremely powerful mesocyclone (velocity is the upper-right inset, and correlation-coefficient in the lower-right inset - Prominently showing the grey-blue "debris" ball) as this storm was producing a potentially violent wedge tornado. The satellite image to the left shows the supercells in Oklahoma firing along the dryline (annotated), including the one in the radar images (circled). Impressive to say the least!Place: Sulphur, Oklahoma (34.509166666667, -96.975277777778) Address: Sulphur, Oklahoma 73086

It's tough ... sometimes not going out at all is good in these cases (May 9 effect). Last year on May 9 I missed all the stuff in Colorado thanks to back tracking 30 miles to find gas :(

Major settle down in the medium to long range pattern (possible ridge and quiet weather) across tornado alley is coming.

The latter part of May should see an increase in activity again. Time for us to take a break.

Congrats to many who scored in Oklahoma yesterday.

Chris Collura replied to Scott Hammel's comment.

And this job indirectly makes chasing MUCH cheaper cuz I earn points for free air and hotel. A 2500 mile 3 day trip, and only spent about $250, mainly in gas, is a good thing!

Posted: May 10, 2016, 6:34 AM

Chris Collura updated his status.

When you are juggling work and chasing it happens - You simply cannot be on all the setups (yesterday, May 9 in OK being a painful example).

With a major system conversion underway, taking May 10 off was not an option ... Scott Hammel can relate to this too. I could only take the 9th off, meaning that day was only a chase day if the target was on the way back to IL.

So, an easy choice: LOSE your job and see a bunch of tornadoes on May 9 in S OK - OR - Miss them THIS time, keep your job, make money, and wait for the inevitable MORE tornadoes later ... Decide...

Back in Chicago tonight as I need to be at work tomorrow (Tuesday) after an 11 hour drive straight through from Wichita, KS. Had I been able to take another day off ... I would have headed south and caught the tornado "fest" in Oklahoma.

Why this type of show had to wait another day is beyond me. And it sure WAS NOT in the trees like SPC was saying ... I doubt Arkansas even got anything major?

You spend 3 hard days chasing and THIS happens on your travel day back. This is why I put in for a more flexible 10 days off at the end of May / start of June.

I absolutely can't stand being ON Facebook right now. It hurts...

Sleeping in a bit late after making the long haul from Wray, Colorado (385 north out of there was closed / blocked) to Hays, Kansas.

Pretty much a straight shot south along 183 and the target area is a mere 90 minutes south of me (pretty much a box from Pratt / Greensburg south to the OK / KS Border).

The HRRR is showing a helicity swatch at 1z directly through Wichita, KS if that verifies.
