Yeah I did go but the only money I spent was on gas and food. The hotel's used points accrued since last year. Total cost was like $150!

Tuesday wasn't that great but Wednesday was better with the dusk tornado near Emden, MO.

Today (4/29) would have been an Okie disappointment for sure had I gone.

Texas today should be better for tornadoes before the day is done.

In your picture the tornado would be above the trees to the right. But you got a wall of precipitation between the tornado and you.

Hi there ... Good question. It's highly variable. So far this year I chased 3 times and caught tornadoes all 3 times. Last year I chased 10 times and caught tornadoes in about 3 of those chases. So very hit or miss.

Starting the long journey out to Kansas late this afternoon and evening. Obviously Tuesday (4/26) should be an interesting day. SPC is precluding a high risk at this time because the tornadic supercells will be "scattered", good for chasing (since storms won't fire everywhere and the storms you are on not producing).Let's hope this won't be a terrible Tuesday event. Stay safe for those chasing this setup. Anyone not chasing needs to have a tornado / disaster plan in place!

Having a contract IT job and living in the Midwest (IL) certainly helps. My job doesn't give me PTO. If I take off, I'm not paid. But I can make up time if I take a day here and there.

Better yet, my company pays for air and lodging. I expense these on MY credit card and my name, not the company's. The result ... many points for free rooms and airline miles.

The last trip to Denver (including OK / TX Panhandles on 4/15) would have costed over $1500, but with these points (free air and hotels), it was more like $390 (mainly SUV rental, gas, and food).

Ben, though, you're time off is envious, I have to say!

Even flying over some areas ... like Ho Chi Minh to Hue or Da Nang, looking down from 35,000 feet it's crystal clear until you see a solid beige-yellow haze horizon below you. You could not even see the ground, except for a few mountain peaks barely visible. Getting a window seat was worthless.

Looks like I'll be seriously eyeing up what may be a potentially major severe weather outbreak during the early to mid week starting Tuesday, April 26. For storm chasers this may be a good thing (if this verifies, the chase areas I'll be working on are outlined in the diagram).On the other hand, if a severe weather outbreak does occur, there is the potential for loss of life and property. Let's hope that IF we get tornadoes, cities / towns are missed by them. Right now the jet stream "energy" for this system is currently crossing the central Pacific ocean at this time ... doing nothing more than providing a strong tail wind for Asia / USA eastbound flights!

Yeah I was zoomed in and fixating on the "main" elephant trunk tornado to the left. So at the time, I simply didn't see it ... But reviewing the HD video from the dash cam later, I clearly see BOTH of these features rotating. The one to the right was just tucked against the UDI (updraft - downdraft interface).

Back in Chicago after great storm chase trip. 4 tornadoes THEN I see a few FEET of snow in Denver! Low and behold it's 80 degrees in Chicago. Spring weather rocks!Also grateful I'm not flying out of Chicago with a TSA line snaking out into the street!

Intetesting. Plasma behaves in very strange ways due to magnetism. Sometimes you can make out the magnetic flux lines in close ups of these spots. Wondering why they're so dark, is it hot plasma blocking sunlight from below or are they that much cooler than their surroundings?

That was probably during the X15 program. That plane exceeded 350,000 feet, basically almost 70 miles up. Space (the Karman line) is 100 km or 62 miles. Scott Crossfield was the pilot and was awarded astronaut wings after that flight above 350k ft.

Trust me ... I ordered 2 of these and they finally arrived. Definitely not bright (still bright but not enough to blind anyone) and focusing it makes a perfect image of the LED chip on the target, not exactly a point.

Came across this graphic from the US Air Force (I think). It's illustrated from the 60s space race era showing what would happen if you bailed out of high speed (such as an X15 or such) at extremely high altitude and hypersonic speed (~7,500 MPH). Basically from Boston to New York City in 3 minutes during the first "phase" of youre "skydive" due to the "throw" of the aircraft. What is not considered is that the heating would probably bake you long before you reach 150,000 feet :/

You don't want this to get TOO wound up. A "round" and powerful upper low like that usually causes meridonal flow (no veering with height) and supports more of a squall line. Hopefully it will be a more open trough with difluent exit region over these areas.

Target fixation causes accidents in many extreme sports too ... IF you look at an object you are trying to avoid, and wind up hitting it.

As a skydiver this same rule applies when landing. Look AWAY from objects you don't want to hit (trees, powerlines, flag poles, etc).

Scary idea here. Mobility (elderly / disabled people slower to think and / or react to rapid decision requirements in dire situations). Also, stopping and filming it all the way up to the point of impact, and even after.

I'm wondering if the camera was even near him afterwards or recovered later from the rubble and footage extracted from the tape / memory card?

And yes, a fluke of good luck put him on top of the debris, not under it. Nevertheless ... What a story to tell, you think?

This is why as a storm chaser for a moment I step back and say that supercells are NOT "good things". Kinda like a box jellyfish or lion ... a pretty and majestic creature, but deadly if you get in its path.

These storms KILL and DESTROY. This is why I always hope the tornadoes on a big chase day STAY OUT of any towns. It's heartbreaking hearing stories like this. It really is sad when you lose someone AND become disabled or hurt because of the same "animal" that hit you.

I'm in Florida weekend of 4/23 so dentist can put crown he had to redo because of a lab screw up back in March ... Look at the outlook then and there SHOULD be a 45 pct hatched tornado bullseye from just west of Chicago to Iowa :)

I remember the video you showed on that encounter at ChaserCon (2012 I think). I almost got ran over by that EF 5 myself. Darkest sky I ever seen in my entire career of storm chasing! Basically dark brown / black against a greenish black. Never will I forget that along with the "afterburner like" roar of it :/

Thanks so much for giving us the link here ... CATV and it's money grubbing beaurocrats pulled all the good stuff off ... to the point I just kept the Internet and removed the costly cable ... 2 to 5 minutes of program material separated by 5 minutes of commercials ("oh come on ... again?"). Basically a 20 minute show can last an hour. No thanks! Having this on the Internet is awesome. Netflix is good for watching these too.

Spring in Chicago is more like a ride at Six Flags...

Saturday ... Temp in low 30's with convective snow squalls (with whiteout conditions) separated by clear sunny skies.

Sunday ... After a low of 25 deg, THEN (less than 12 hours later) sunny and beautiful with a high of nearly 75, then high (Altocumulus) clouds with lightning in them during the evening!

Monday ... Back to 35 deg with snow flurries.

Roller coaster ... put you're hands up and wear your coat !!!

This is very sad and disheartening. I doubt it was directed towards these 3 people, as some drunk gun slinging idiots would have shot anything like that in a remote area (road signs there have bullet hokes).

Just the fact that it's these 3 makes it hurt more (because of the disrespect and thoughtlessness).

Karma will catch them ... And THEY will be hit by a tornado this year - Probably dead or disabled (with grandma pissing on THEIR grave if dead) :(
