Yeah ... And I think I will see an allergist on it. Good point. I never was tested for allergies. The only thing I found out (the hard way) I'm allergic to is Escargot and Sulfa Medicines.

Florida has just been freaking rediculous this year. Remember I moved out of there, so I'm sure that - besides El Niño practicing soccer - Helps alot.

So glad I ain't flying today (not going to California until Friday). EVERY single flight out of Midway has been cancelled due to the snow and wind, before it even started. Not much here in NW suburbs yet as the real meat of this storm (blizzard conditions) will be near the IL / IN border.

Today (2/23) looks to be another (and potentially SICK) tornado day today in deep south and eastward into AL / NW FL. This setup means business because the subtropical jet is overly active due to El Niño. This is not something to be taken lightly. Severe weather WILL happen (esp tornadoes) in these areas today.

Chris Collura replied to Kathy Williams's comment.

Exactly. I've spoken to many policemen including my dad back in the day. He would walk up to that traffic stop and barely say "license and registration please" from the fear and "heart in the throat" feeling. Even worse, many people don't like cops too much. And I was told you don't get desensitized from it either. It's always a fear thats there.

Posted: Feb 19, 2016, 9:58 AM

Chris Collura updated his status.

OK ... With all these police related posts - I figured I'll give my honest opinion on just what these folks have to put up with. I know its tough getting pulled over and getting a ticket, but there’s a whole lot more to that - Especially with my own father being with NYPD years back.

1). Often giving a ticket, besides the fact you may have broken the law, is a process that most police do not enjoy doing - Especially if it's trying to find revenue (such as a "quota"). Imagine being a policeman and your sergeant says "OK, you have to monitor the interstate today.", and you're like "Oh great, that again?" ... Also, pulling someone over for a traffic stop, not knowing who it can be, is one of the most terrifying experiences a policeman can go through as he (or she) is walking up to that window.

2). Police are not making a whole lot of money, and risking their life every day. Even worse, they often see things (domestic violence, a DUI crash with horrific injuries, being shot at be a would-be thief, etc). These are highly stressful and traumatic things for anyone to see, police or not!

3). In some cases, policeman are saving lives and / or rescuing people. Unfortunately, many policemen have lost their partners and fellow comrades because of this line of work.

4). If you are forced to kill someone, such as being shot at and you have to shoot back in self defense (or to prevent innocent deaths), it's not like what you see in the movies, guys! You are often depressed and guilty for months, you've taken someone's life, and it WILL affect you in some way for the rest of your life (mentally).

5). Many policemen, especially ones who worked with my father and are retired, have succumbed to the effects of severe stress and / or alcoholism. This is (again) NOT an easy job.

6). Although - as with any line of work - There occasionally are some dishonest and corrupt policemen, it seems as if this "label" is applied to the police in general. One bad cop can make a horrible stereotype for 99 others because of this (and more STRESS for those as well).

So, sometimes we need to just step back and think of what these people have to go through to serve our citizens. Try to think of this the next time you get a ticket for a stop sign ;-)

Low level "ground hugging" flight in a helicopter is wicked. I remember on a UH-1 we skydived from, the pilot took off and hovered a few feet off the ground, accelerating to about 150 / 160 MPH through fields and between trees (while still a few feet above ground), then popped up into a "zoom climb"! No one was wanting to shoot at us, though :-)

Again ... Tornadoes in my home town area in south FL (don't worry - hang on I'm coming - I'll be there this Saturday night to make it all go away) and in the deep south yesterday.Tornado season is in these areas in February, especially with strong El Niño energizing the subtropical jet stream.Late March to late June the Midwest and central USA should see tornadoes. In the picture, the April 9 Rochelle tornado in IL (2015) and ground scar (inset) viewed from an aircraft a couple days later.Always have a tornado plan!

OK ... Valentines day coming up. Do we really need a "special day" of the year to tell someone you love them? Should that day be every day (Valentines day or the other SIMILAR 364 days a year)?

Unfortunately I've seen several relationships end bitterly on Valentine's day. Usually because someone had to travel for work (one nasty "spat and split" was during ChaserCon in 2014), or because someone got the wrong gift or forgot a card ... Jesus, man - If you love someone you don't need a day for it when you have EVERY day to say it!

I see this as a HALLMARK DAY and nothing else. A commercialized way of making money (store / gift sales) and not much else. And just disrupt plans ("sorry can't hang out this weekend because it's Valentine's day and I have to be with her" - blah, blah)!

It was before my time too. In the 80's when I was a kid, there was a black and white TV that was almost never used after my great grandmother passed. I would turn it on for a second, then off, and the "star" would appear and fade. I would watch it making believe I was "leaving" an alien solar system at light speed / warp 9! I would say "that was a nice planet"!

Maybe a Eurocopter if they can get a hold of one. If they landed one of those on Everest, I'm sure this is a piece of cake. The altitude is the issue for helicopters (many have a service ceiling under 12,000 feet unloaded).

Looks like the violent deep South supercells are thankfully winding down (with one last cell near Macedonia, AL) and evolving into a squall line. Thankfully the main tornado earlier appeared to miss heavily populated areas. Just because it's winter does not mean you cannot get spring like severe weather. In fact, the deep south severe weather season is NOW! Always have a plan to stay safe!

Carrollton / Reform, AL cell cycling down. More violent supercells developing to the SW. It's gonna be a LONG evening there!

Chris Collura replied to Lori Ferguson's comment.

It appears Reform, AL is next on this tornadoes hit list as light is fading as well ... Please be safe...

Posted: Feb 2, 2016, 3:09 PM

Just in case you're wondering ... I am not chasing this as its well to my south. Reform, AL appears next to be potentially hit... take cover now!Anyway ... keep a close eye out if you are living (or chasing) near west central Alabama!Note the "training" mesocyclones in a SW to NE oriented line!

Posted: Feb 2, 2016, 3:07 PM

It appears Carrollton, Alabama had the debris signature pass right over them. I hope the storm has cycled down. More mesocyclones have also formed to the SW in a training line of supercells with the most violent lead storm heading just west of Tuscaloosa after passing over Carrollton. Take cover now!

This is a perfect example of the importance of doppler radar! To the left (reflectivity), a tornadic supercell appears as just a blob of heavy rain moving from east central Mississippi into Alabama (SW of Tuscaloosa). But when you look at the same cell to the right (velocity), there's no mistake seeing the (gate to gate) velocity signature of a strong tornado! The red dots are storm chasers.

Exactly a year ago today (Feb 1) I was digging out of 19" to 20" of snow here in Chicago with 50 MPH winds. Today its almost 50 deg thanks to a storm track that shifted well to our NW (I'm so sorry, Kansas / Nebraska). Superbowl is next Sunday as well, so even that is shifted this year...

You look at these pictures and it doesn't do any justice without an explanation. The hotel at first glance to the average Joe actually looks pretty nice. But the "pretty" guard towers and open tile paver area, so any rebel can be easily shot, makes it look threatening. The volcano is the least of your worries. Political unrest, rebels, terrorists, corruption, etc ... That would scare the bejezus out of me more than any storm, volcano, or virus carrying bat (well maybe I'll leave the bats out of it)!
