Notice during the violent winds there are pressure-drop "spikes". Can those be eyewall mesovortices? That may be the mixing of the violent winds down to the surface.

Happy Holidays and God bless anyone affected by the tornadoes in the mid south today (12/23). I was able to get a glimpse of that tornadic monster looking west from high altitude (about 39,000 feet) flying from Chicago to Florida. Excuse the blurriness, it was very bumpy from the turbulence. In Florida safely now for a couple of days.

While some lucky storm chasers were intercepting tornadoes in the NE Mississippi area (into W Tennessee), the unmistakeable over-shooting top can be seen looming far to my west while flying from Chicago to Florida at about 39,000 feet!

NO ... I cannot chase Wednesdays setup across the mid south (as with many others) on 12/23. I'm flying from Chicago to Florida for family and I already checked changing tickets to 12/24 and there simply aren't any. Once again, a good setup right at the worst times (holidays). For those who don't have a family or holiday crunches, good luck and stay safe.

It will be deep in the TREES as well and not optimal (and risky) for chasing anyway with fast storm speeds. If this was W Texas or Oklahoma, I'd be on it. There will be many more in 2016 especially with El Niño waning by then!

What I WILL DO is make sure I'm seated at a window and on the RIGHT side of the plane ... The plane will be shaking alot for sure (crossing N side of exit region of jet stream) but maybe I'll get a view of an overshooting top or something?

Posted: Dec 22, 2015, 6:17 AM

Chris Collura replied to Willoughby Owen's comment.

Thanks Willoughby Owen. Sometimes chases just happen like that. That sure was an awesome day. The bullseye of the high risk was actually in NE Nebraska that day, where really nothing happened. Staying south and resisting temptation and forecasting skills were sure needed that day!

Posted: Dec 21, 2015, 5:47 PM

Chris Collura commented on Meteorologist Tony Laubach's photo.

My flight path will go from midway (Chicago) to Florida. I can't chase this (it's Christmas week) but it reminds me of some big tornadoes in Alabama near Mobile on Christmas a few years back. I'll expect some turbulence for me, as I'll be crossing the exit region of the jet from the north.

Here's my entry for meso-Monday! May 29, 2008 near Tipton / Beloit, Kansas. This is a frame grab from HD video. It's NOT HDR. What you see here is what you saw there (with less justice)! Yes there even a multivortex tornado under this monster. This went on to produce an EF-3 wedge near Jewell, Kansas with a sympathetic anticyclonic thin tornado on the south side if the massive RFD, which directly affected the TWISTEX group I was chasing with!Place: Glenn Elder (39.50724593833, -98.339578835385) Address: Glen Elder, Kansas

Much better today as knee seems to have been just sore from working over the weekend on some cabling and NOT because of the feared bursitis.I think spending $834 THEN $355 back in the ER (it happened on a weekend at night when my primary care as well as all the non ER clinics were closed) in October just to get $20 in meds was enough. I kept them just in case, hehehe! And yes my $825 a quarter (and rising) health insurance is more active than the "skin folds on the Michelin man" ... But did they pay a penny? No.So yes ... The medicines were $20. The "PERMISSION" to be allowed to get them was $1189 :)Picture: I'm jealous. Canada, you lucky bastards! Lol...

Ok ... December 14th here and it appears I have recurrent bursitis.

The same shit starting all over again (painful area in knee cap) and migrating to rest of knee. Putting ice on it.

This time I'll OD on Motrin ... I sint going to any fucking ER or money grubbing doctor again :(

I was smart enough to SAVE these unused meds. Same pain starting all over again (Dec 14). Looks like I simply have a bad knee (recurrent bursitis).

The bout in the ER last month on Halloween was $834 plus some $355 administration "fee". That was just to get a prescription for $25 in meds. This time these money grubbing doctors can KEEP their wallets empty.

Let the pains begin...

To me ... This crap on working weekends was a complete WASTE OF TIME ... I really wish I could have been in Chicago. Ofcourse this coming weekend I'm here and probably bored as heck. No buddies to hang out (everyone's busy or out of town)!

Back in Chicago after being in St Louis for work. The city is segregated and kinda strange despite it being the next major city SW of Chicago. Not a multicultural city for sure (yes there are different races there BUT no mingling - heck they found my thick New York accent "weird enough" there)! The food is mainly BBQ. Happy to be back in the melting pot where EVERYONE is welcome :)

Yeah ... basically a big parabola (or really it's a hyperbolic cosecant). About the only thing special about St Louis.

Hitting the Zicam and Airborne BIG time. Ugh ... stupid colds going around!

Being sick and having to travel to STL for work this weekend certainly doesn't mix.

COVER you're mouth, or just stay out of my effing cubicle!

The waves on the Great Lakes are those short period and violent looking "square" waves too. Rebounds off seawalls and structures ... always good footage that never disappoints.

In chicago there's a parking garage with this huge single lever saying "gym, day care ctr, nite club" and "nominal load ~250 A 3 phase" ... no lock. Humm, tempting - Should I shut it off?

You have no idea how many dreams I get like this. Usually it's a big tornado and my camera is either out of reach or not working?

Why is it always about the "camera gear" in these dreams? I'm learning just to wake up from these dreams all excited about just SEEING the tornado in it.

Screw the gear, it's not like you can bring the footage back to real life :/

Thanks for all your comments. I've had a stressful past couple of weeks and when you're stressed you forget things. Like checking the turkey 5 hours later and realizing you put the oven on 400 deg but never moved the other dial from "off" to "bake" (duh?). Leaving a credit card on a table and not realizing until 18 hours later is on par with the turkey not done.

I'm satisfied with just a few hundred people never going to that restaurant again. That's thousands lost, and I don't give a shit about gift cards cuz I ain't going there anymore.

Exactly ... Complete idiot. I don't see too many TGIFs around here. I like them better anyway. Chili's is walking distance from my extended stay here.

The phone call from Amazon for an iPad purchase and a signature miss match for an amount over $500 gave this all away.

Very luck thus was a credit card so I'm not responsible for this crap. Tis the season...

I already told like a dozen people about this and they will spread the word and avoid Chili's.

I've done this before, left a card on the front desk at a hotel, and another time at an Italian restaurant. Both times I went back an hour or day later and got it back. This time I wasn't so lucky.

Ok ... Here's a good one for you folks. I had dinner at the Chili's around the corner Wednesday night. Stupid me, in a hurry, leaves my credit card on the table after paying - not realizing it until the next day when trying to pay for a sandwich at lunch.

So I rush back to Chili's and they DON'T have it. Meanwhile I find out someone bought an iPad using it on Amazon as well as another charge for an HD TV. Ofcourse these were declined, but you think just turning it in is easier?

The idiot who STOLE the card was my server, Shelby. She wound up getting her ass arrested because of my "forgetfulness". What a dumbass. There's a chip in these cards you idiot.

My issue now is getting a new card and calling a dozen merchants to change it to the new number. What a pain in the ass.
