Just learned that if I was stupid enough to stay in this "social" cesspool (South FL) a couple years back, I would have been miserable, friend less, and broke too (or maybe dead / heart failure), but probably not cold now. I think I'll take the cold. Just visit this place. Don't live here UNLESS you bring you're friends, job, and family WITH YOU!

Hey Don Danilo Grkovich, I'm talking about the "pressure" the wind exerts on a stationary object in a thin atmosphere.
Posted: Nov 28, 2015, 6:23 PM
Chris Collura replied to Tim Marshall's comment.
Hey Don Barbee. Correct, I'm referring to the relative wind - air moving over a still opject (wind) or an object moving through the air (airspeed). A 100 mph wind in 1/100 atmosphere will only exert about 1/10 the DYNAMIC PRESSURE on an object. The formula is F = ApV^2. F is force, A being the area centroid, p is density, and V for velocity (squared). Ofcourse this works for subsonic speeds. A 1000 mph TRUE speed on Mars would be interesting since supersonic wave drag comes into play. But would still be somewhere equivalent to a 100 or more MPH wind if it pushed against something. Also, remember p density is NOT air, it's CO2, which also has a higher density than air (44g per mole instead of ~30g with 78% nitrogen at 32g and 21% oxygen at 32g in air - remember it's two atoms for N2 and O2 as well).

Is that TRUE or INDICATED airspeed? 60 MPH true on Mars list like 5 MPH indicated (what you feel sticking your hand into it).

Hey Scott Currens, they just sent another one 6 months later thinking it got lost in the mail. It was funny, right into the trash! It was early May and I wasn't missing supercells nor good pay at my Chicago IT contract to sit is some dumb courtroom, flight and all and be looked down on by rich court people :(

Chris Collura commented on Tim Marshall's photo.
Not to mention that 100 MPH on Mars (true airspeed) will only push on objects with 10 mph (effective / indicated airspeed) or less due to the thin density.

Just order stuff online. No lines, no parking disputes, AND NO KNIVES.

Glad it ain't me!NO, this is 2:15 PM, not 6 PM (11/25). 3 people in my office left for airport 3 hours before flight and all three MISSED them. This is why I chose to stay put and NOT travel to Florida until Saturday (my family there was smart and did the same thing). For anyone traveling be patient, expect a hellish commute, and most importantly stay SAFE and have a good Thanksgiving holiday.

It's not the insurance I'm so worried about. All this ER visit was a doctor looking at my leg for 30 seconds, then writing my scripts for one antibiotic and one pain killer. These meds were like $25. One pain pill was given to me in the ER. Ofcourse, if this was during day, I would have went to CVS or walgreens clinic. The charges are gouging, a joke, and an utter shameful embarrassment of the American health care system.

This was a hospital bill for an ER visit for a severely inflamed knee. They did NOTHING ... But to get pain killers and antibiotics, you gotta see a doctor. The minute clinic at Walgreens could have done all this for $40. But when does this happen? Yup on a holiday and Saturday night when nothing else is open.F-ck you, Murphey. This was a visit just for a prescription - For medicines costing no more than $30. Also note how much my super expensive insurance paid :)

This is what makes meteorology such an awesome topic. Check out the full on near blizzard conditions in the NW Chicago suburbs with a foot of snow. Yet, meanwhile (in the inset), and a mere 15 miles due east, NO SNOW and strong winds whipping up waves on Lake Michigan north of Chicago! This goes to show how localized and narrow a snow swath can be!

What a freaking mess this morning. I have poor peripheral vision and I'm a bit clumsy. So you can imagine where I'm going with this post as I had a tall full Styrofoam coffee cup on my desk...
...Blooossshh! My left hand knocks it over. It goes dead on my keyboard! All over my desk, covering my phone, my hand written notes, paperwork, mouse - not to mention spills on my new pants and shirt - burning the heck out of me. About an hour cleaning it all up.
Low and behold, my boss "speaks to me" about my NYC "explicative interjections" but let's it slide after seeing the extent of the aftermath!
WTF? ... Aah-huuum? Maybe lids for these white cups?

I heard that story (the man who rode the wind) and he ejected over the storm top at 47,000 feet (an F6 crusader I think) when the engine quit (of all places, thanks Murphey)! He fell to 10,000 feet and his chute opened automatically but after that he was pulled back up to 26,000 feet and slammed back down. This was just a general summer storm (garden variety) and not even severe.

This turned out to be slower speeds (due to storms moving right of motion vector) and a nocturnal outbreak of large tornadoes.
Posted: Nov 17, 2015, 12:35 PM
Chris Collura commented on his own post.
And seriously ... about these updraft speeds in these storms ... They can reach almost 200 mph in extreme cases, and anyone under a parachute would go from near the ground to 40,000 feet in a mere 3 minutes.
Such a rapid ascent will be guaranteed doom to anyone NOT in an armored pressure suit. Not only will you be frozen to death at minus -60 or even -80 deg, but you should pass out in 15 seconds from hypoxia at that height.
Lastly (and least concern) is the rapid ascent will give you the bends (just like a SCUBA diver coming up too fast), and that alone can cause permanent nerve damage.
Also, before freezing to death, passing out, or both, the exposure to rain and hail alone should kill you from blunt trauma or even drowning and hypothermia in mid air! ... Oh, and the fabric parachute probably will tear also.
And without the chute, falling at 120 mph in a 180 mph updraft, you'll still go UP at 5,000+ feet a minute!

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's post.
This drove me crazy because I'm not so far away in FL. SW Kansas is about a 12 hour drive straight through from Chicago, plus I have a crap load of unused miles and points that would have made this trip free (outside of food and gas). In 2016 January some of those points get lost. Plus the concern of taking 2 days off was not a big deal
I was looking at flying out on Sunday night to Dallas or OKC, returning Tuesday. Then I saw SQUALL LINE all over the models, outlook, and such with the bulk of the activity at night. It was discouraging.
Low and behold, Monday afternoon - And long committed to my "no go" decision, I see the trending into no immediate squall line and discrete storms. But still the main stuff after dary, at least in my target area, which most likely would be TX panhandles (NOT Liberal in KS).
This, after chasing garbage in Iowa last week ... Yeah, was a bitter pill to swallow. BUT it being at night, with fast motions and just video frame grabs, it was a bit easier. Had this been during the day I would have either been there (or drank cyanide if I wasn't).
Oh, speaking of "during the day" ... Why won't we just stop the stupid fall back time change to ST and just keep the damn DST ????

Ok ... now I begin to wonder (SWA would have been free, hotel free, rental car free, just gas) ... but what IF I went?
I know I would have flown into Dallas and headed NW towards Childress or Quanah, initially.
So most likeky, I would not have been on the Kansas / Guymon monster tornado Tony Laubach (congrats again BTW) was on.
I probably would be looking at the Pampa / Miami stuff. But alas at night illuminated by lightning.

Hopefully the LLJ will do something before dark if instability sets up. But the LLJ usually strengthens after dark and is usually responsible for the MCS. There will have to be a warm front or something for the LLJ to impinge on. The dryline / pacific cold front will help with storm initiation with this setup, hopefully as the trough arrives. I'll call it a 2 to 3 hour window for discrete or semi discrete storms.

Unfortunate enough for that area surge wise, but it seems the moat area is a rather small "soft spot" in the winds, and the surge is usually generated by the larger "averaged" winds across the right side of the storm core (N Hemisphere), so the effect on the surge there would have been minimal, despite lighter winds.
Also surge is created before the storm makes landfall anyway from a fetch of water being pushed in (mass transport) and the pressure surge (meteotsunami).
I hope this work you did at least gets some great recognition from the scientific community.

Ok ... Just so you all know.
Thanksgiving is a time to be with your family and / or friends to celebrate their value and enjoy food and well-being.
It's NOT a day to rush to stores (that are SUPPOSED to be open no sooner than the following day) to get a discount on a tee-vee and push aside a door busting, potentially knife wielding crowd of nut jobs.
Maybe the loved one you are buying that tee-vee for may not love you anymore for missing Thanksgiving. Just a thought.

SPC day 3 is stressing WIND DAMAGE as the main threat with a "narrow" squall line (Enhanced Risk).
They also mention the fast motion, surging cold front, and poor moisture making embedded tornadoes even marginal at best.

The excruciating pain I have been having non stop Saturday (like someone striking my knee with a hammer) is a bit better (on antibiotics and strong pain killers) after spending Halloween night in the ER (ofcourse it happens when I cannot see my doctor there in S Florida). I was even given crutches.I was finally able to put two and two together and remember WTF I did (pulled leg, banged it, etc) ... I remember last week doing some exercise in the hotel and I was on my knees and put my knee down on a sharp object (screw) in the carpet. I bled a little, cussed a bit (NYC in me), and shrugged it off. What happened was that bacteria infected my bursa (fluid filled sac below my knee cap) through that cut and flared last night (sat). This is extremely painful and I never EVER ever wanna get this again.
