This is so charming and beautiful. I stopped by there in late May and thought the original memorial was awesome enough.

Thats my funny face for you all!Absolutely excruciating pain in my left knee. Spent a few hours around midnight in the FTL ER and was put on strong pain killers and antibiotics. I had a flare-up of first time bursitis.Man this is painful stuff ... on par with being whacked on the knee cap with a hammer (without the pain afterwards going away).I don't care if the ER Co payment is $20 or $20,000. Relief from this is worth any price now!I hope everyone had a good Halloween. What a drama scene watching people all busted up and drunk walking (or being carried) in here.

Shit ... and I'm on a contract in Chicago and my primary doctor is in Florida. I'll wait for it to go away :(

No one is taking my f_cking money again. A trip to the ER last year costed over $2,500 WITH insurance, and it was just mild panic attack from caffeine withdrawal (chest pain does need to be checked in all cases though). An expensive answer indeed.

Oct 31 and after 3 days of improvement it's in a dull but really painful ache. Knee "clicks" silently when I bend it and straighten it. Knee cap no longer hurts. Now it's the tendon below it that's sore and swollen. I'm so not ready for these "geriatric" problems.

Hey Bob Frady, In my 5th and 6th grades, I had such a teacher. His name was Mr Howarth ... A creepy looking ginger headed guy with a high forehead, short fuse, and chair-chunking temper from Hell!

Ironically, he was given the special education (bad kid) classes. I would see him - raging in a tantrum - throwing wastebaskets and chairs.

He had a white plastic metre stick he would whip us with. The more bad kids were, the more "centimeters" of "the metre stick" they would get. The metre stick actually broke, and I still got the half of it in my tool box (from 1981)!

If the metre stick wasn't available, mister Howarth would just take you over his knee and spank you in front of the rest of the snickering class ... Those were the days :)

You know how much I MISS my mom. God love her. But im disobeying her --Praytel, how?

...I'M TOO F_CKING NICE...

I always heard it from my mom. My dad got angry when I did that. And, most recently, my best friend - and ONLY friend I have here in Chicago - Told me that.

Today was an eye opener as I am always polite, willing, and nice to my boss (actually he's not my boss, just the EDI guy - But he never liked me and is a complete effing asshole anyway).

He snarls at me. He never appreciated anything I do, wrote me up once already, talks to himself, rude and looking down on me - yet he seems to be NICE to everyone else.

I can only be nice so many F_CKING times ... And I tell you now that I'll do exactly as my buddy (who used to work for the airlines) would do to unruly or just plain stupid passengers - Give them the exact OPPOSITE of WHAT they expect (because assholes deserve just that: Some "ASS", and I'm not talking about sex)!

Fortunately, this jackass I report to is not writing my paycheck. The consulting firm I work through contract for is ... And what I did so far for almost 2 years was supposed to be a 3 month contract initially. So I'm doing something right!

Attitude ... A "little" thing that can make a BIG difference.

Taking a "knee" I guess. Not sure WTF happened as I don't remember banging my knee nor doing anything "rigorous" (since Sunday morning). Just like if someone whacked my knee cap with a hammer (but the pain is continuous, and almost un bearable). Woke up last night (Tue) and the pain kept me awake.Got tons of ice on it, taking Motrin, barely any swelling though. Not sure what the heck thus is (?).

The last minute weakening to **ONLY** 165 MPH could have made the difference in hiding in the hotel bathroom to the entire building getting swept off its foundation had it stayed at 200 sustained (same difference as an EF5 tornado weakening to EF3, since damage inflicted is exponential due to the square of velocity).

I assume the first part of the eye was somewhat softer than the after eye passage ... as they went through the eastern part of the inner eyewall, where the SE side of that had onshore SW flow with 15 mph movement of the storm added to this wind vector in E Zapata.

Posted: Oct 26, 2015, 6:51 AM

Chris Collura commented on Lindsey Fowler's post.

Is that really Patricia? How can a 737 reach 60,000 feet?

The clouds don't look like ice clouds you would normally find there at such an altitude.

The service ceiling of a 737 400 is like 42,500 feet anyway.

Maybe something else (hole punch cloud from top), meso low, or photoshop image from satellite / ISS and a view from a normal flight?

Skydive today (probably on last real perfect day of fall). Head down through 10,000 feet (from just over 13,500) netted a true airspeed of 255 MPH (measured on Altitrak)! Maybe the gusts in hurricane Patricia at maximum intensity?

But the situation (the only week I could NOT take just one day off was THIS and ONLY THIS week) at my job (atop a tough period in my personal life) has hit me very hard mentally.

The "tropical" SDS is hell (I haven't seen a major hurricane in over 10 years now).

With all due respect - and impeccable luck - You saw, what, like 6 in just 2 years, lol.

Hurricane Patricia is now on shore now. Hopefully chasers Josh Morgerman and Erik are ok (seems like they are). Moving out of La Manzanilla and into a reinforced building the next town over was very wise.

And meanwhile, a tornado in NW Iowa now, with no SPC outlook (less than 2% all areas)?

Also, WTF does Facebook show a link, then I go back in and it's gone with the link above and below it still there?

Quite possibly. It's strange they were circling SE of the storm earlier. Maybe they are checking the environment or dropping EXBTs (EXpendible Bathy Thermograph) probes to measure SST down below the ocean surface?

Then you would have had a 120 mph storm with a clear wide calm "stadium" in the middle. But the inner eyewall should be just collapsing at landfall. Not sure if the 200 mph wind core would be gone by that time?

Holy crap. What a change.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 1:43 PM

Chris Collura commented on his own photo.

Wow great observation guys! The inner eyewall is no longer outputting cold cirrus, but a moat has formed and is starting to get surrounded by an outer more dominant eyewall. I remember this in Charley in 2004. The outer eyewall had 80 to 90 mph gusts, then it got lighter and was only 45 to 50, then the inner eyewall hit and that's where the 150 mph gusts were.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 1:29 PM

Here is the landfall area of hurricane Patricia narrowed down. The worst case scenario will be not only being on the right side of the eye in the inner eyewall, but on the beach end of a cove or bay where water can funnel into. La Manzanilla is like this and if they get the core winds it will be catastrophic. Fortunately there isn't much there and it's been evacuated. I hope @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and his group will be OK.

In this (possible) case, and definitely with Wilma, what happened was that an intense meso low formed in the moat between the weakening inner eyewall and intensifying outer eyewall. The inner eye and this meso vortex rotated about each other (binary interaction). Therefore the visible eye appeared to cycloidally wobble like that.

The terrifying jog to the NE was nothing more than a trochoidal loop (jog) so it appears Manzanillo, fortunately, won't get the small and devastating core of hurricane Patricia. The motion is more north now but may wobble again. It can come in anywhere from La Manzanilla and NW of there, but I doubt as far as Puerto Vallarta. The storm eye is also shrinking again, but a slight hint of shear is impinging on the west margins of the storm - but still far from affecting the storms core, since it's moving NNE to begin with. It's a matter of watching now ... landfall is only several hours away. I still hope @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and Erik there score somehow on this 100 year storm ... and not get hurt.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 12:22 PM

Chris Collura replied to Danilo Grkovich's comment.

Yes I see that ... and it made a major wobble back N. The NE jog ... apparently enough to give anyone in Manzanillo "Montezuma's revenge", was temporary. They won't get inside the tiny wind core ... hopefully, unless the storm does a loop. This is trochoidal motion.

Manzanillo was my main base city there ... when I was just about to book them my boss decided to take off Friday and the other guy is already on vacation in India, so I couldn't go.

Had this happened last week or next week I could have taken a whole week off if needed.

I'm inches away from resigning from this BS I call "storm chasing". It's just not healthy anymore.

I see a far more serious and catastrophic event unfolding now with a major shift of Patricia's motion to the NNE to even NE. This will take the center DIRECTLY over Manzanillo around sunset today.

Maybe if the same winds (let's say we took a piece of Patricia's core and placed it over an area for 15 seconds) passed over Joplin, MO, the damage will possibly be less ... BUT ... These winds will not last 15 seconds, but an hour or two (right of the eye). I expect to see all the vegetation stripped away, and parts of highway 200 scoured. Pray no towns (and chasers) will be missed by that core.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:51 AM

Chris Collura replied to Brandon Sullivan's comment.

Hey Brett Wright, Tip was large but had 190 MPH sustained winds and 870 MB. The pressure being the real indicator, not the winds because "200 MPH" becomes ambiguous when exceeded (damage done is same, everything's gone).

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:49 AM

Chris Collura replied to Aaron Rigsby's comment.

Yeah, Aaron Rigsby, and I planned on chasing this as a major hurricane (expecting 120 to 130 mph winds), not something like this. If I did go, I'd probably be backing down seeing that offshore.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:46 AM

Chris Collura replied to Brandon Sullivan's comment.

Wilma is no longer the strongest in W Hemisphere, but still stands as the strongest in the Atlantic basin (Patricia is in the Pacific). The strongest tropical cyclone ever (pending what Patricia does today) was Tip in in 1979 in W Pacific / E Hemisphere.

Chris Collura replied to Aaron Rigsby's comment.

I was supposed to be there but this week I had work commitments filling in for a few folks. Not sure if this was a good thing at this point.

Also, it's looking like the narrow ring of catastrophic winds will come ashore right AFTER dark or close to it. So little light and footage will mostly be audio.

This is an extremely dangerous situation for any hurricane chasing activity in this storm!

Chris Collura replied to Lori Ferguson's comment.

Hey Lori Ferguson, maybe it will miss any of the small towns there. It's sparse along that area. Not sure where I would even go there. It's just too strong to chase. The aftermath should (hopefully) be just blown down forests and pavement scouring on highway 200. This area should be less than 15 miles wide. The mudslides are another issue. As for Cartels, that would be the least of my worries of those are overrated by the media.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:22 AM

That's explosive intensification for you. Also these intensify more at night due to the heat being from below (ocean) and radiational cooling of the 50k to 60k cloud tops to space, which is maximized at night.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:19 AM

Chris Collura replied to Mark Sudduth's comment.

It's more like 10 to 12 miles wide. The strongest winds are probably in a narrow ring 6 miles from the center and maybe a mile thick (Charley in 04 like, just much stronger).

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:17 AM

Chris Collura replied to Charles Edwards's comment.

That's right. A 10 mile wide eye, and the 74 mph winds or higher extend 30 miles from the center. The 200 mph winds are probably in a ring a mile or two thick, starting at 5 or 6 miles from the center.

This may come ashore in rural coastal areas. You simply cannot chase this. Let's hope it misses these little villages. Also I'm worried about the safety of two chasers who are there.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:13 AM

Here is the visible satellite image of Patricia off Mexico just after sunrise on Oct 23, 2015.This is the strongest tropical cyclone ever observed in the western hemisphere. Sustained winds at this time are 200 mph, with a central pressure of 882 mb ... and it's still intensifying.Basically this is a strong EF5 tornado ... same destruction possible (like Joplin, MO in May 2011) - But on a larger scale. Gusts can be 250 (or even 300) MPH in a storm like this! It's difficult to wrap your mind around this.Believe it or not, two chasers, @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and his chase partner Erik are trying to find a substantial structure to document the core of this thing coming in (near the red "X" in the picture). There's not many major towns in that part of Mexico, along a small 2 lane coastal road (highway 200). The storm will come in sunset or a bit after at the landfall point as a record breaking category 5 hurricane.I was ready to head out yesterday to chase this. I couldn't get the time off due to work (supervisor and coworker out). Maybe this is a good thing because if you don't carry a bomb shelter around with you - how can you even chase something like this?May God be with Josh and Erik over there. Quite frankly, these two are in grave danger and to be honest, if I was them I think I would stand down from this chase. It's not worth getting hurt. I'm concerned for their safety.

Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 6:08 AM

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's photo.

This is just unreal! Find a cave in a cliff to put you and your car in?

Do you see NHC discussion on this? 205 MPH ... yes it's still intensifying! 880 mb is basically 4,500 feet above sea level - you'll actually get winded running up stairs (almost like Denvers altitude)! And as Dave Lewison mentioned ... This is a strong EF5 tornado (just bigger)! Also EF5 tornado damages by peak gusts, not a 205 MPH sustained jet of air.

Hurricane Patricia is now entering category 4 intensity and taking aim on the coastal areas of the Jalisco province of Mexico for a Friday (10/23) evening landfall anywhere from Chamela to Puerto Vallarta. Intensity and landfall (looking to be just after dark on Friday) will be at AT LEAST category 4 strength.

The storm is very tight, with a pinhole eye and the hurricane forced wind envelope extending out a mere 30 miles from the center. I could not chase this due to work. Chasers who did go (Josh Morgerman and I think Mike Theiss?) need to be especially wary of where the small core comes in (autopista / highway 200 dotted by small fishing villages).

Like Charley in 2004 ... If you are not in the storm core - you won't even see hurricane conditions. If you are, you damn sure better be surrounded by reinforced concrete!

FYI, the Mets didn't win a world series since 1986. They last played the NY Yankees ("subway" series) but lost in 2000. The Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908. The last time they were even IN a World Series (and lost) was 1945.

OK ... With the Atlantic void of any threats ... My turn to post a lame "anniversary" type story - Actually not all that "lame"!Hurricane Wilma was raging on a path from the W Caribbean through Mexico and into Florida exactly a decade ago (10 years). Ironically this was the last time the United States had a landfall of a major hurricane - Yes TEN YEARS (sorry, global warming advicates)! With an intensity of almost 190 MPH (try to wrap your mind around that - winds sustained at over 3 miles a minute, with gusts probably over 250 MPH ... An EF5 tornado is 200 MPH and up)! With an eye 2.5 miles wide and central pressure of 882 mb ... basically sea level pressure defecit of about 1.9 PSI (12.7 instead of 14.7) ... about the same as being 4000 feet above sea level. What a sight to behold. Then the storm goes through eyewall replacement cycles, and winds up with a giant eye 40 miles across, hitting the Yucatan, then South Florida at 125 MPH causing 87 fatalities and almost 30 billion dollars in damages. Meanwhile, tropical storm Alpha, the first storm to use the Greek alphabet, is in the Bahamas. Wilma's huge circulation eventually tears apart and absorbs TS Alpha (Fujiwara effect) after hitting Florida and going out to sea. Those were the days...

Might be that camera angle too. I've seen CGs striking just outside an airplane window and actually heard the sound through the nearly soundproof fuselage.

Planes are designed to take lightning hits and even mitigate them via static discharge wicks on the trailing edges of wingtips.

Planes are NOT designed for a direct hit with a positive giant "superbolt". One such strike led to the destruction of a glider back in 1999.

Yeah ... it's that 500 mb Baja low that's shearing it all off and keeping it at bay. This blocking pattern can last for 3 weeks. It's been 85 deg in chicago in response to the thermal ridgeing across the central USA as well. Even the fall tornado "mini" season was killed by this. And the Atlantic - forget it (shear apart or recurve).

Stinks when a season lasts a month normally and a locked up pattern kills 90% of it. Good for those who hate storms.

The lack of a fall "mini" storm chasing season is quite understandable when you see this annotated H5 (500 mb flow) map. Be HAPPY we did not see this in May and June! A storm chasers nightmare. The good thing is that this blocking pattern should keep the central USA and parts of the Midwest warm and choke off any hurricane threats in the east Pacific and N Atlantic US coasts for at least a week.

Yes I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing seeing the tarp flapping in the wind showing no pressure "stretching". Then I assumed more oxygen at 3 PSI like in space suits, but there was a scene where a guage said "12.6 PSI". Also 120 MPH winds at 1/100 of sea level here on earth would produce a mere 5 to 10 MPH of "indicated" airspeed during the storm. Finally ... sound won't travel well in Mars atmosphere either (hypoacoustic effect), it should be more like the way sound travels inside a light bulb.

One term of data folding is when there are color codes on a display (base reflectivity, VIL, etc) that start using the light precipitation colors since you maxed out the highest color available and have to start using the color table over again. Let's simply say you have blue, green, and red. Red being 55 to 65 dbz. A 75 dbz return may show up as a blue area within the red. And 85 dbz as a green area in that, etc.

The team is screwed (in the state it's in now). Their defense is a failure and they cannot even move the ball in their offensive. It's gonna take a total be build of the team and coaching before this will change. Not something that happens in a couple of months.

Many models are trending east now. Not being in the Bahamas (esp San Salvador) now is ultimately sickening. Flights on Spirit to there yesterday were under $250 r/t. Oh well... it's the Atlantic Basin so WTF do we all expect?

Posted: Oct 1, 2015, 7:04 AM

Semana Cay is uninhabited.

No airstrip. No roads. Accessible only by boat.

San Salvador will get clocked even worse if that N turn materializes.

With such a beautiful presentation and CONTINUED movement to the SW ... Whoever went to the central Bahamas to chase this made a lucky roll of the dice. On the other hand ... I'm sitting tight here in Chicago until I see a definite strike possibility on the Carolinas late weekend to next week (???). A new England chase will probably not bag a hurricane. The thing now is how sharp and WHEN will that N turn be?
