Hurricane Joaquin is making my eyes bleed watching the models. I'm gonna just watch some science clips on YouTube and doze off!

That is strange, Danilo Grkovich. It could be the structure of the core itself (not a steep gradient). Ike was like that in 2008 in the Gulf, but Ike was larger.

Dusting off hurricane chasing equipment. Just in case.

Looks more and more like a Carolina strike into this Sunday for Hurricane Joaquin. The models continue to cluster there and shift west. This is gonna get very interesting.

I think at this point it don't matter. I'm already looking at flights for this into RDU, and even the Bahamas! That SW motion is quite persistent. Maybe it won't turn at all!

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 12:45 PM

Chris Collura replied to Doug Kiesling's comment.

I even saw $250 R/T on Spirit to San Salvador in the Bahamas (but that was from FTL, and even if that island will get hit or not). Many models bring it near Nags Head, NC too. Flights into RDU are a plenty too.

Philadelphia is cheap from MDW on SWA. Like $69 each way. Forget Newark with their stupid "advanced purchase" logo blocking the cheap flights for $487 each way. Driving is a long option, but flying in will be far more convenient for me and my job schedule. The distance is about the same as if I drove to the CO / KS border, give or take.

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Yeah ... you'll see 12 to 15 foot waves. Down south into Palm Beach and south of there, the shadow zone of the Bahamas will block most of the swell.

I remember in high school in S Florida how much the surfers hated the Bahamas.

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 8:58 AM

Chris Collura commented on Jeff Piotrowski's post.

It's gonna be a GREAT STORM over water and only the hurricane hunters will see it.

I'm worried if it will be garbage when it finally comes in or glances the coast (remember Earl in 2010)?

Soupy crap. If I have spicy Mexican I try to hold it in until I'm at work ... then blow it up. Use their TP as well. Fringe benefits.

The thing is the pressure drops first, then the winds catch up later, due to inertia.

Basically the car takes time to reach top speed with the pedal down.

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 6:55 AM

Some interesting stuff going on here with hurricane Joaquin. The decreasing northerly shear as well as an explosive growth of "hot towers" (thunderstorms reaching over 60,000 feet, casting shadows on the top of the CDO) near the storm center. Good radial outflow in most quadrants as well.

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 6:52 AM

Chris Collura replied to Matt Sellers's comment.

I got points on SWA for "gouging" issues like this.

Like "spring break" there's some sort of event (NASCAR I think) going on in the Carolinas that's driving up the prices.

Gotta love when some event, TOTALLY UNRELATED to the purpose of your trip, cock-blocks you.

Dropped 17 mb from 5 am to 8 am ... almost 6 mb per hour. Yes, RI has begun.

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 6:35 AM

Chris Collura commented on Doug Kiesling Photo & Video Fan Page.'s link.

Down to 971 mb at 8 am advisory. 988 mb at 5 am. Pretty rapid deepening IMO.

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 6:28 AM

Chris Collura commented on iCyclone's photo.

Ok ... This will be my turn to chase one of these things!

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 6:27 AM

Chris Collura commented on Olivier Staiger's post.

That will be interesting. But a path across the central USA and the key will be to "chase" areas where there's NO clouds.

Posted: Sep 30, 2015, 6:25 AM

Chris Collura updated his status.

Watching hurricane Joaquin rapidly intensifying now off the SE Bahamas at 971 mb with 75 mph winds (as of the 8 am advisory).

It's still drifting WSW. When will the N turn be? Will it hit the Carolinas during the late weekend? Will it stay at sea? Will it even turn? How strong will it be?

The storm will interact with an upper low if it takes the northern track and nears NC / Virginia ... But how? It might get sheared apart, or it might be supported by the upper air divergence. Interesting.

Will I be chasing it?

These are all agonizing questions but a hurricane chasing trip looks more and more likely with each model run and advisory. Time will tell.

Posted: Sep 29, 2015, 7:16 PM

Chris Collura commented on Doug Kiesling's post.

APPLE vs AN ORANGE ... Exactly ... Any questions?

Posted: Sep 29, 2015, 2:31 PM

Chris Collura replied to Jack Corso's comment.

I see that ... but if you look at the 500 mb winds it's 45 knots out of the SSW right over where that storm might be (shear!). Maybe a hybrid system.

Posted: Sep 29, 2015, 2:22 PM

Chris Collura updated his status.

Watching tropical storm (soon to be hurricane) Joaquin wrapping up east of the Bahamas. Drifting slowly WSW at the time ... But expected to make that all too often "hard right" out to sea.

Right now I just don't see this getting near the Atlantic Coast at higher lattitudes. Heck it's 55 deg here in Chicago during the afternoon (strong cold front and trough blasting eastward that should foster a recurving system).

Right now (besides high surf), I just see lots of people panicking. When we see something like what we saw off the coast of Taiwan a few days back ... Then we can start the engines on the hype train.

The church should teach love, not hate.

These "baptist" churches have gone overboard with this.

And an EF5 won't come. That would be too quick (and a delight for chasers).

Usually bad karma comes in the form of a very slow and painful event ... like a disease. Boring, sick ppl, sad, u can't chase "it", and painful.

Because I had a claim on it with pictures and diagrams. Then my ex g/f, looking for a receipt (while I was away working in Lakeland), told the insurance company when we were on the phone, that I was a storm chaser.

The company then thought all the stolen equipment was for business, and an investigation ensued.

Then later ... not knowing how "serious" the investigation was ... I stuck with the fact that it was for personal camera equipment. I had no idea what was coming.

One of the facts was that one of the cameras stolen was uses in the hurricane Charley stuff ... a $200 camera along with all the other stuff.

My ex g/f hated storm chasing and spilled the beans to them - perhaps spitefully - And it appeared to work.

On May 10, 2005 ... an investigator came to my job (when I was working in Lakeland). I was expecting a check finally ... instead he threw down printouts of my web pages and ppl I chase with, as well as the site for the Charley DVDs. He told me he filed a fraud report, that's when I got a lawywr, and he handled the rest, and no charges were filed (except what I owed on my CC, lol).

I feel bad for anyone who has thousands of dollars in equipment stolen. It happened to someone I know recently and to me really bad back in 2005.

I see now we have "go fund me" and other charities to help. Back in 2005 those did not exist.

Even worse, in my case, I received absolutely NO SUPPORTS from my storm chasing "comrads" I worked with at the time. In fact ... I was actually laughed at by them.

Then my insurance didn't pay for the stuff. So ... basically ... every DIME to replace the gear - Plus legal fees to fight untrue fraud charges from my insurance company at the time - Was MY responsibility ... AND I paid it all off by MYSELF ... slowly but surely.

Fair and square.

I feel that these "charities" are being too lenient at giving ... Along with insurance companies being too unfair at paying / helping loyal customers ... It's just NOT fair.

I'm just not in the mood to help anyone after I was treated that way in 2005.

No one helped nor funded me ... even my insurance company "got me up the ass" really good (denied my claim after replacing all the stuff on the credit card).

And YES ... I hope Jeff gets some kind of help for what has happened.

People in my group even made fun of me when I was in this situation ... Joking about my bad luck :(

After denying my claim (homeowners) they wanted to get me for 3rd degree fraud .. THINKING I was trying to claim business equipment on homeowners - I had to get a lawyer (to "squash" the case), costing almost another $3,000 on top of the nearly $8,000 for what I had already replaced on my CC charges!

By that time some FN already snorted what he or she got for my stuff up their noses...

If there's no express line, I'm forced to wait with all the morons who take 35 mins - PER PERSON - to rent a car (no credit card, food stamps, etc - YES, DON'T laugh - I saw that in NC for hurricane Arthur last year)!

Now what happens when it's like that and you got 25 ppl in front of you?

So I'm not surprised at anything anymore. Put yourself in THEIR shoes: You just found a customer who's car quit. After towing and recomp, there's water in the fuel and it's $2,000 to fix the engine. Then you try to track that "last customer" and it's an address that don't exist :(

For most people it's a BLESSING.

With me traveling every other weekend and most likely busy this weekend helping with a move ... I'm glad I'm not missing much.

The tropics (ATL) have some disturbances in the far east Atlantic which are already moving NW (fish storms).

Not much of a "fall season" either in the midwest. The EPAC also is quiet despite a powerful El Niño.

Look to STRANGE PLACES (Italy, England, Long Island, NY) and you'll catch some tornadoes and waterspouts (by LUCK only)!

Heres a good one after my trip down south...

I drop off rental car and they ask for receipt. Ok ... I filled up 15 miles from the airport (for $2.29 otherwise it's $3.29 to avoid the gougerey) and was told I need a receipt LESS than 10 miles from airport.

Charged a gallon "gas fee" ($10 extra) for that stupid BS. Needle was way more than the "F" on the guage. I was told some stupid jackasses put WATER in the tank when returning vehicles ... So they started the receipt policy. WTF?

Not a big deal as I probably saved $5 in gas ... but the water in the fuel story ... now that's just WRONG! And it's not the car rental company's fault either ... It can cost $2K in repairs ... ALL of us pay for these jerks.

I'm not there just today ... Ofcourse ... glad I don't have to bang my head too hard (not a Sept 12, 2013 type event).

Then Florida gets 1/2 inch of rain from a highly sheared shower (when 2" normally fall in a day). And every government official down there will look like a complete A hole.

I remember all too well. The real kidney problems were in Denver in 2005 at the NSCC (now ChaserCon) with our whole group doing a Charley presentation. In the car during the trip to the mountains after that (I think we picked you up in Cheyenne and when you left you stayed near the airport an extra night before we flew back).

That's when you realized something was seriously wrong. Ironically, you were one in FOUR people I knew at the time suffering from renal failure. And more optimistically, you were the only one (out of those 4) who is still alive today. God bless...
