That's almost unheard of in the IT world. Did you get through 9/11 job slump too? Very lucky indeed.

I'm happy with my contract job here in Chicagoland that was supposed to be 3 months and I've been here for almost 21 months!

You'll be surprised.

Good for you. Smoking killed my best friend in 2007 (diabetic) then my mom in 2013.

And the $$$ saved (cigs are NOT cheap) probably funded a good chunk if not all of your storm chasing funds in a years time as well.

Pack a day (at $5 a pack) is $1825 a year saved. This is OK, in IL it's $11 a pack, in NY it's $18 ... ouch!

Note: Medical bills / ins premiums can add a lil more to this cost.

Just couldn't get something like this in the Gulf of Mexico?

That's too much of a tall order I guess.

But in reality, El Niño simply DISPLACES weather patterns ... causing storms to form in places that normally don't get them (and NOT in places they normally do).

Did that to the rental back in 2008 and on my way to OKC to exchange it at the Alamo there some local cop nails me with $150 ticket for driving it with cracks in the windshield.

I told him I have to deal with over $5000 in damages and he just said: "Well now it's $5150 ... Fix the window BEFORE you drive it next time..."

So what did they do with that "state of emergency" for Florida? Laugh ... it's funny!

Meanwhile the weather up here in Chicago is reflecting that same mood with cloudy and dreary weather up here ... Summer is not forever and a skydive would have been nice.

The storm surge was generated over the gulf and already began its push towards land while the storm was cat-5 with 160 MPH winds and higher.

As the storm weakened a bit, all this water already set in motion came ashore. Like a freight train with all that mass, it doesn't stop right away (akin to Katrina's surge).

Chris Collura replied to Matt Williams's comment.

I saw the 8 am reposition and really don't get that, outside of the NHC folks probably confused trying to find the LLC, if one even exists.

On visible satellite I saw two outflow boundaries from thunderstorms that Linda mimicked banding in low levels but in the loop they are moving away not rotating in (arcus outflow lines / gust fronts).

Nothing like that on the Atlantic for a long time.

Posted: Aug 29, 2015, 6:27 AM

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's photo.

I cannot see any center anymore looping the visible satellite. Plus the NHC 8 AM position has the storm over northern coast of eastern Cuba with forecast track going SW then NW (???) ... what's left of it probably will move into Brownsville TX. Lol.

BTW the west track is because the storm is highly sheared and the weak LLC is shallow and steered by the easterly trade winds below 850 mb, not the general 700 to 500 mb flow as with a vertically stacked system.

Hey Danilo Grkovich ... Highest was 90 MPH in Frances in 2004 that I was standing in. I crouched down and I was sliding on my shoes across the pavement as if someone was pushing me on ice. Usually my feet are knocked out from under me past 80 to 85 mph. At 120 mph you're lifted and carried through the air (terminal velocity in free fall equivalent). I've never stood in winds over 80 to 90 mph. You just can't do it without a harness or something. Plus this is VERY dangerous.

Posted: Aug 28, 2015, 8:59 AM

Move over, Erika and go back in time 10 years ago (Aug 29) when the USA used to get hit with major hurricanes......This is the arrival of hurricane forced winds during the morning of August 29, 2005 between Biloxi / Gulfport, MS. The winds here are MINIMAL hurricane forced (70 - 80 MPH), far less than the soon to arrive eyewall and tidal surge, allowing one to stand in the winds as long as there is no "upwind" debris. The helmet and goggles are a MUST. Note the effects on my body!

If in the Gulf it's barely a TS (high storm relative shear). Carolinas a hurricane (moving N with SW flow aloft = lower storm relative shear). FL is the land of NO and will probably dissippate over Hispaniola before it reaches there :(

I'm not expecting much now. This was a worst case scenario for survival of a storm that's been fighting shear for 4 days and now should meet its maker and demise over Hispaniola and it's 9,000 foot terrain. What a waste of a name. I'll take the Pacific anytime over this lame Atlantic stuff...

That was more of a media and stereotypical "circus" in my opinion.

Looking at the IR channel of Erika yiu would think she's well organized. Even looping it you see rotation in the high altitude cloud tops! But don't be fooled. Looking at the visible satellite channel to the right, we see the typical "its not 2004-05" pattern with an exposed low level center creeping out from under the high cloud tops (especially if you loop it).The line and "x's" connect the upper rotation gyres of the high level clouds. The low level center (LLC) has been de-coupled as NW winds aloft blow off the convection to the SE, including the upper "gyre".Three things can happen. The center can reform under the high cloud canopy (unlikely), or convection can pulsatingly reform around the LLC and the process can repeat maintaining a weak storm until the shear weakens, or three, the shear strengthens and Erika degenerates entirely.A TUTT low (tropical upper tropospheric trough) over Cuba is producing the strong NW flow aloft over Erika.

When I worked in the pizza delivery business back in the late 80's / early 90's I was paid $2 an hour with tips being the major source of income.

If someone ever stiffed any of us, we would note that address and if they ordered again we would tag a $2 or $3 delivery fee on their bill.

If they asked why there was the small up charge we would say it was for fuel or increased costs instituting the extra fee.

One driver was fired for burning out of someone's driveway after getting $40 exact for a $39.95 bill and them saying "two 20 dollar bills ... all yours!"

Back in high school a buddy of mine pulled that crap by leaving 39 cents on a $50 bill, mostly in pennies. The kitchen was slow and the waitress tried hard to accommodate him and his g/f. Upon leaving we heard some waitress say "oh that was dirty" and low and behold on leaving she chases him down and throws the change back at his car, half of it clinking into the open window with her yelling "you cheap little son of a...."!

This was so stupid because this was clearly not the waitresses fault. Put yourself in her shoes.

Hey Dean N Lyn Chase ... the eye wobbles are slow to induce such relative pressure changes. Mini swirls and especially embedded eyewall mesocyclones that have pressure defects of 2 mb or more as they pass. They also can spin up or down the dynamic winds speeds by 50 mph or so!

I'm concerned about the up welling of cooler water since it's just staying over the same part of the ocean ... Which may induce more weakening.

It's really gotta start that anticipated motion to the N and NNE. Also it may cross the cool trail of the previous typhoon easy of Taiwan as well (from Soudelor) if that hasn't mixed (MLD) by now.

Hurricane Danny is in the tropical Atlantic and moving WNW with 105 MPH winds as of 11 AM EDT (Aug 21). This is a small storm with a "pinhole" eye making it very susceptible to intensity changes. This Saturday evening I head to FL for couple days for dental follow up on Monday early ... Then back to Chicago --Or maybe "stop over" in San Juan BEFORE going back to Chicago?Hummm ... Not sure given the intensity forecast, with dry air and shear forecasted to affect the storm by Sunday early, bringing it near Puerto Rico as a weakening tropical storm by Tuesday early. Might not be worth it but who knows. This might be one of the only interesting Atlantic storms this year...

Suicide is horrible. It's a "permanent solution to a temporary problem". I just "thought" about it, and threatened it "screaming for help or attention".

My mom went through the phone book with me crying in the midst of it all (1987) and found someone to talk to, and she even paid for it.

I remember my dad walking out that day saying "you better shape up ... and stop doing that 'chasing tunnels' and focus on fixing this..." (lol, he said "tunnels" but meant "funnels" as in tornadoes, shows how open minded my dad was).

My mom told me that day "you'll always be my son ... and if HE (aka my Dad) has to GO, so be it!"

Posted: Aug 18, 2015, 8:05 AM

Chris Collura commented on Billy Wade's photo.

Yes indeed. It was called self abuse or even self inflicted injury in my case. Even anything requiring medical attention was out of pocket, most if not all insurance companies deny coverage for "self inflicted" injuries. So yes, the financial issues here don't help. In my case I was sexually abused as a kid by my baby sitter, who raped my autistic brother and told me "I'm too ugly to get it so he is...". That pain followed me for many years, through my teen years. It manifested itself in a horrible OCD where I always thought my hair was "uneven", as if it was a sickness. I would pull a out to make it "match" the other side. I was 16 / 17 at the time (1986 - 87). Psychotherapy helped identifying the underlying cause as the previous abuse (yeah LOCK THESE PPL UP IN GENERAL POPULATION for abusing kids sexually)!!!!! Anyway, it took a long time to get over this. I remember thinking of killing myself then a few times. My mom was very supportive of this ... my dad wanted to kick me out of the house (fighting violently with my mom over that, so I caused a lot of problems with their marriage ... all because of my hair). The only residual effects I have now is that I'm very bad at handling rejections and losing people I love. Especially when it's over something superficial, like my age or looks.

Unreal video by those "crazy redneck.funny guys"! They are EXTREMELY lucky the true core missed them ... by a few miles to say the least. I don't even want to imagine trying to drive through conditions like that.

Basically like they said that they are "in the clouds". The eyewall pretty much extends to ground (or sea) level in these storms. The clouds are the "fog" we may see, and possible condensation due to such a rapid pressure fall, or even dynamic pressure (from wind gust or mini swirl?). Just basically the eyewall clouds mixed with the rain drops. Akin to the "wall" of a wedge tornado. Go higher up and the rain drops get smaller, no debris, still clouds. Go higher, you get snow (freezing level), then the 60,000 foot cirrus tops

Come to think of it, given the freezing level at 15 or 16 thousand feet, about 75% of the hurricane (upper parts of it) is just ice and snowflakes :)

Yes ... 11 years since Hurricane Charley hit the FL west coast today (Aug 13) with 150 MPH winds.

Highly unlikely we will see any activity like that in the meantime (or probably the rest of 2015 in the Atlantic).

Meanwhile the Chicago Air and Water show is this weekend along the lakeshore. Weather should be good for the event both days (Aug 15 to 16).

Last year this event was cancelled due to low clouds and fog. I'm more excited about this event than posting any links to Charley video at this point!

5 volts across that distance is quite a ways (low voltage and high current) on 24 guage wire. Always use high / line 110v for the long runs like that. Even a small 24 guage wire at 110v would be enough, with the adapter and 5v run at the unit.

Still even more bizarre ... Typhoon Soudelor looks like it has made landfall just north or near Hualien City. Look at how the inner eye completely vanished and deep convection replaced it (basically a thunderstorm spinning around like the hub of a wheel). The right side, including Su'ao is getting the maximum onshore flow. Mudslides and flash floods now are the biggest threats (highway 9 near river in Hualien City especially).

Hey Doug Kiesling ... most of these Pacific / Asian islands have their population centers AWAY from the eastern faces (Hualien City being an exception in this case). Sounds like history taught them not to love the ocean like S Floridians do, ey?

Also downslope flow will erode an eyewall, evaporative cooling eyewall, stops wind vertical mixing. Well see.

Hey Danilo Grkovich ... Josh Morgerman just reported he's in nearly calm conditions. But I looked at the Taiwan radar and the pressure center appears NE of his group. Another view of typhoon Soudelor approaching Taiwan. It appears air flowing down from the higher terrain is descending and drying (compression) from the mountains. I've seen this in Rita in 2005 from the mountains in Hispaniola when the storm was near Key West. Interesting is the dry "punch" creating a front-like feature south of the eyewall segment SE of the eye (open SW). @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and his group are entering that region in Hualien City. Taiwan is indeed an island ... but large enough (like Hispaniola) to disrupt an approaching storm.

Watching Typhoon Soudelor approaching the E coast of Taiwan with winds from 110 to 120 MPH. Some chasers are out there in Hualien City in the storms path. In the graphic (annotated radar image) we can clearly see a powerful -- and very LARGE outer eyewall, surrounding a smaller eyewall struggling inside. This could very well be an aversion to a far stronger storm, and such internal tropical cyclone dynamics are poorly understood (eyewall replacement especially).

Posted: Aug 7, 2015, 9:17 AM

Chris Collura commented on iCyclone's photo.

You are getting pounded by the outer eyewall actually. I think this intense and large eyewall is what is choking the inner core flow somewhat. Damn ... if it had another 24 hours over water.

It had a blue ice bucket with a handle to release the cubes from the tray ... BTW, My mom threw this at my dad in an argument sometime in February 1982. He ducked and it hit the lamp instead.

The most exciting thing I've seen in this "hemisphere" in years. Gotta make the best of being 10,000 miles from any activity.

Not many SAFE options south of Hualien city, but on track this will still put you on the RFQ (forward right side) of the storm. You'll still get something! Hoping for a landfall after daybreak.

I was on there for the storm chasing and removed myself from all traces of it. There are other ways to stay in touch!

Should develop once it's away from any land and moves NE faster so SW flow aloft won't shred it.

I figured Hualien City and south of there. There's a highway (11) that runs down the coast and (9) a bit inland. 11 seems to be elevated in some spots. I'm more concerned about rockslides than the wind / surges itself. Highway 8 is along a riverbed between mountains. Scary. This 2 day wait probably seems like a week for you guys.

My dad gave me two things: Baldness and a jinx that "promised I'll never meet anyone nice in my life". Both came true. His dream of becoming a grandfather shattered is what he got right back in his face.

Hoping it comes ashore in a place that's prepared and at a good intensity. Don't wish for loss of life, but wish for a good chase (Hualien City maybe).

If I was to choose a city ... maybe Hualien City? Big port city, away from mudslide risks. Parking garages, etc!

Yeah ... Thanks God I work in IT. I'm not high priority going over there anyway (W Pacific) but it's on my bucket list 4 someday. If I was focusing on weather solely outside of chasing central USA I would be like a single 80 y/o guy in ICU dying of heart failure.

If I lived in S California I'll probably be ON JoshMorgerman's plane!

Certainly the place to be will be the Pacific ... especially Mexico in a month or two. Wishing them the best of luck.

Hopefully the weakening won't be so bad. I remember they busted hard last October out there when an island hop flight was cancelled and the storm weakened due to shear.

These folks like many chasers put a lot of time, money, and most importantly effort in what they do. Nothing crazy about it, just what passion does to us chasers.

Western Pacific is literally a "world away difference" between the West Pacific and Atlantic basins - Tropically that is. The Atlantic remains a joke and will do so for much of the season (strong positive ENSO / El Niño). The Pacific is where the tropical "violence" will be this year...

Ominous radar image with a marine supercell just offshore in lake Michigan while driving from Chicago to the suburbs and watching CONTINUOUS lightning to my NE. Was anyone on this storm before it went offshore? I see SW Iowa finally showed speculative chasers who was boss hundreds of miles outside any SPC tornado probs today as well!

We got it! Up at 7 AM and just landed at 7:30 to 8. So high you can see Mississippi River and Lake Michigan at the same time. Nearly 4 miles up. Minus -17 on the temp up there with a NW wind near 60 MPH.

Right on ... wake up at 5 AM ... Jump from at least 20,000 feet at 7 AM over Ottawa, IL ... Free fall 3.5 miles in 90 seconds in air -17 deg below zero ... Land just before 7:30. Time to have coffee and relax for a bit! Pics to come soon!
