If it was May 22, 2008 then that was near Grinnell kansas just north of I-70. Kinda creepy how we can recognize a storm date and location just by a picture of it :)

Jeez ... living in California would have solved a lot of missed chases (even W Pacific). I remember considering the Odile chase in Cabo myself a couple months back. Tickets at last minute from Chicago (or FL) were at least $1K with 2 stops! LA to Cabo (probably JoshMorgerman ' s flight) would have been around $300 non stop. Now watch I'll move to California and the Atlantic would blow up like 04 / 05 :P

Sad when people get angry and break things. Workers and engineers work so hard to make something, then someone gets angry and chunks it at the wall, breaking it. As for me, being an avid storm chaser, seeing tornadoes and hurricanes level / destroy entire towns and communities (most recently PILGER, NEBRASKA) - SO, seeing someone lose their temper and break something is - well - just plain depressing :(

Not sure if related (possibly) was the perfect storm going on just offshore of the Eastern seaboard. With such a powerful Canadian air mass pushing up against a powerful ocean hybrid storm (subtropical) .. 80 to 100 mph winds prevailed over a 1000 mile fetch producing extreme waves and surges! West Palm Beach in Florida had 30+ foot destructive waves that shattered seawalls and flooded the area under near perfect clear skies there. Ofcourse the Andrea Gail fishing vessel was lost off Massachusetts in waves 100 feet high.

Gotta love flying SWA out of FL ... Maybe 25 pre-boarders (those are the "wheelchair" guests - A lot of them), then about 50 screaming kids between A and B groups ("family" boarding). So that means my B9 position 'should' be a middle seat way in the back - But actually still got window in row 2 in front! ... SWA is the better airline ... Imagine if this was Delta or American? Or - Even worse, how 'bout Spirit? :)

Yeah Doug Kiesling ... Sorry to say it's looking more and more like a direct hit. Yeah its a small target but as Murphey's law has it ... it tends to get hit more often than Florida and the Gulf combined. I think I really dropped the ball on this one.

Our buddy Jim Edds is the only one there. WHY now? Next week would be so much better ... I'm gonna throwup.

Mine was back in 2012 and was done with an oversized cap and my dentist cut corners ... if $1500 was cutting corners. The temp cap after the RC was good but the permanent cap never felt right, but was bearable.

In late 2013 I was told that it needs to redone and would cost $2500, then $1500 six months after that, and my insurance does *NOT* cover it (not a surprise).

So what did I do? Just left it alone and used sensodyne. When it falls out 5 years from now is when I'll drop $4000 on it...

We have the chance to STOP THIS in its tracks NOW but too many idiots have their heads up their asses to act correctly. Hurricane Gonzalo looking like a very close call for Bermuda on Friday afternoon. Models trending more and more west with a potential miss to the island to the west.

I'm hoping for that just because rushing in from CA then to FL with Bermuda in between will be a nightmare of changing tickets and reservations, not to mention a costly gamble (with high bust potential).

Don't want to not go and miss such a great storm, but at the same time I don't want to go and the storm is "look and can't touch" and just out if reach. This sport stinks in a sense!

It kinda sucks in that sense, Jason Foster. Tiger Direct is your best bet but you find lots of stuff online then they don't carry it in the store. But obviously thought it was such a "good" idea they now do it on anything returned (not just cameras) ... say cheese :(

I have chronic post nasal drip. Luckily the one I had here in chicago lasted only a, day or two and had no cough. Hope you feel better Jason Foster! Remember that the Zicam stuff ONLY works at the very first signs of a cold. I sometimes take it even if my throat is dry and scratchy ... long before it's a raging sore throat - just to be safe!

Still a job well done, Josh Morgerman! Busts can and do happen ... I've had my share of them. Yes it's tough but that's chasing! Each time we go out we are rolling dice. Sometimes were lucky, many times nature deals us a short hand! I remember Rina in the Yucatan few years back!

Hey Allen Cherulnik ... I beleive it's because they are in California and flights like this are not that crazy expensive. I'm not chasing this but checked for the fun of it and a flight from chicago to Atlanta is actually MORE than a flight out of LA to Japan!!! Plus these folks (especially Josh Morgerman) seem to have this Asian / Pacific chasing pretty much dialed in. I really enjoy following these threads and chase reports! Jealous? Heck yeah! Amazed? Even more so ... Keep up the great work!

I remember a flight where I was at the window ... taking pictures of storms. Then the old lady on the middle seat asked me to close the shade because the lightning scared her. I halted and told her "this really means A LOT to me" .. And for some strange reason, she seemed to understand. It was on a flight to New York on a Boeing 727 .. Remember those?

Hey Marko ... This is a tricky call for Okinawa as thats a possible starting point ... But right now this storm is just Nutz! Probably (with night time diurnal max due to cooling of cloud tops fostering heat Flux from warm ocean below - kind of like storms on Jupiter) undergoing more intensification . .. 175 mph sustained winds with higher gusts is basically an EF4 tornado 40 miles or more wide!!! Hope you guys get an intercept on this one. Almost tempted to go myself ... but probably won't hit any land like THAT (fortunately)...

Tokyo should be fine with the substantial buildings there. There may be some surge if the wind funnels the water into the bay (venturi effect). But the storm will be taking a glancing approach (not coming straight in as if it moved NW into Tokyo, it's moving NE at that point), so surges will be minimal, especially if the storm is farther out and they get the weaker left side. Similar track in many ways to Arthur this year (July) on the Atlantic (yes there was a storm near 85-90 kts / 100 mph there in 2014) in NC, but Japan in this case with the NE motion (probably with the cyclone core farther out relative to land as with Arthur).

I remember a very interesting explanation on how those rocks move. They need a thin sheet of ice that's mobile over a half inch or so of water, which turns the desert sand into slippery mud. Wind pushes the ice sheet, which pushes the rock across the slimy bottom. The end result when it dries back up is the (moved) rock with the trail. I love earth science!
