Wound up having a pretty good weekend here in Chicago to pass the time with good weather although I didn't get to go to Florida. This morning I woke up very sad (with that Monday feeling) but I'm OK now. 4 days till Friday.

Sitting here in Chicago suburbs at hotel today. Bored and not much to do. Slept late, even skydive place closed. Hopefully head to city later for soup or something with friend of mine.

Well ... My monthly (and birthday) trip to Florida was moved to Oct 17 or so. I would rebook one flight, then that one gets cancelled, then try another and same thing. Even the skydive place was shut down. I got so tired of changing / re arranging hotels, flights, and car rentals that I just said "Fuggit" and decided to cancel everything and get refunds. I'll rebook later after this is resolved ... This was all because of arson and fire at ATC for Chicago air traffic on 9/26. Oct 9 I have to go to California so the week after I'll go to Florida.

Funny as you mentioned Lori Ferguson and Katt Alvarez ... I've seen impatient ppl park there and get the $250 ticket when the lot was packed and ppl parked there because across the street they get towed. Sounds more like a conspiracy ... oh my.

Hey Katt Alvarez ... I've been visiting that motel on and off since 2006. Same lot always empty and many blue spaces. I wonder if that place was a former hospital?

Seriously? That many disabled parking spots on the BACKSIDE of this motel in Chicago, 1000 feet away from the front and office?

My record was 11 g's for about a second in an extra 300 aerobatic plane going straight down at 220 knots and leveling out hard pull to level flight! That made my eyes slanted for a bit .. and I probably weighed as much as a small car during that time :/

I wasn't there as I came out that year on May 22 with Jeff Gammons and Dave Cornwell when we started chasing out there. I see a lot of familiar faces. I believe that was a down time between activity in E Oklahoma / Arkansas and south Texas supercells on May 24. After that I was solo and tagging along with Amos M and Eric Nguyen for may 26 and 27 including the derecho. Flew back to FL on May 28. It was a short gig for me that year cuz of a new job.

Hey guys don't feel too bad. I was "guiding" a group of newbie chasers who left one vehicle in eastern side of Wichita to avoid hail. I had 2 ride alongs and needed to take them back due to their commitments. When I was done ... had I been solo ... I could have blasted for the "finale" into oklahoma fairly easily. The consolation was that rope tornado as well as the more wider and terrifying EF2 cycle SW of Wichita.

I also believe the ERC just completed as it made landfall leaving a much wider core flow but 10 to 15 mph weaker with the inner pinhole / small eye going away at that point. Something the best computer models cannot forecast. Very complex process.

Hey Aaron / Greg ... Sometimes the service is to blame but each phone may use a slightly different protocol ... sort of like one system using 802.11b and another 802.11g in a similar sense. This CAN cause different devices to behave differently on the SAME carrier.

Basically you need to GO with whatever WORKS best for YOU. Doesn't matter if it's the phone or carrier. In my case I had a horrible dead zone on my iPhone 4s at my office, but not on my S5, with the same AT&T plan. Either it's the internal antenna or some subtle difference in the air mode it uses. My iPad never worked at my friends wifi in California, yet his worked same iPad. Yet my iPad worked on everyone else's wifi. Yet after hours of messing around we never figured it out. After selling / trading my iPad for Samsung tablet, I connected there fine. So there's gotta be something device specific. Sorry Eric Treece.

The $14.5k amount is absurd. I sure hope rent there is not 1500 a month! Doing the math, that's about $279 a week, or $6.97 per hour (below min wage if 40 hour week, so I'm assuming that is for part time). $19k a year is about $365 a week or full time $9.13 an hour. These salaries are actually considered LOW INCOME in many places. Yes ... if you live in Scottsbluff, and your rent is $200 a month, you'd be OK. Just won't be able to afford a plane ticket or big trip. Rentals there are still $500 to $700 a month average on rent.com so this is not good. Sticking to IT ... And waiting for another hurricane Charley where some made $14.5k in a couple of weeks :(

As the tropical Atlantic continues its fishy nature of wasting names ... The eastern pacific remains very active with hurricane Odile taking a direct hit on Cabo San Lucas (with Josh Morgerman there with his icyclone group) in a dangerous night time landfall (9/14). I myself was close to going there too but the night time landfall did not justify the $975 airfares with 2 stops ... If this pattern continues - Us hurricane chasers should be in S California and NOT S Florida :(

Probably buying a new one would actually SAVE money! NO ... You won't anything obvious like a loose screw or shorted wire. Most likely it's a bad chip or component on a PC micro board. We all remember cassette players ... they would jam and you HOPE it was a bad cassette. Put a new one in ... same problem!!! $350 later (in 1986's dollars) ... A new cassette deck was the solution :(

Hey Matt Sellers ... Mine is about the 10 to 12 hour option. The chicago to W Kansas is about 11 hours. Unfortunately for Dave Lewison ... A 108 hour drive each way is not an option. Ouch!

Posted: Sep 4, 2014, 7:21 AM

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's post.

Another thing is the "fly vs drive" options. Not applicable here but intetesting to put in perspective. For chasing this year ... it was not bad driving from chicago to the chase targets where a 1 hour flight last minute would be $1000 or more!

The "ferry" distance in fuel was like $75 to $100 each way (central or W kansas from chicago). When you consider driving across the country from NYC to SFO and back .. fuel alone can be $500 EACH way over 4 to 5 days based on 25 MPG average!

So a $500 r/t ticket would be HALF of the cost of driving, save 8-10 travel days, and probably another $75 a night in lodging less meals. Back in the 70's and 80's ... (where a $250 plane ticket was like $700 now based on CPI) and gas was $0.50 a gallon ... yes ... driving was cheaper.

Posted: Sep 4, 2014, 6:00 AM

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's post.

To be honest ... Airline prices skyrocketed the past few years ... Owing to fuel prices and - most importantly - extremely high demands. The higher demand is a recent issue.

For example ... back in 2008 - SW charged around $200 to $250 round trip from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale. This was average. During spring break, it was $400 or more. NOW the cheapest I ever saw was $350 in 2014. And YES ... I checked non SW and the other major carriers such as Delta and American were $100 MORE!

Spirit was comparable to SW ... But I would not recommend flying with that airline if you have ANY bags (they CHARGE for carry on)! Gone are the low prices ... There simply not there anymore.

Also ... I believe the reservations systems use a rather complicated system to try to fill every seat and take the availability to market it as such. It's quite possible that while the window seat you got was $350 , the person in the middle seat next to you spent $850!

Also based on demand is the DISTANCE you are flying. Usually the shorter flights to popular cities are very expensive. I've seen 1 hour flights from Atlanta to Miami at $1000 while LA to Tokyo was $800 for the same days!

Not what it appears to be ey?

For you Dave Lewison ... I would recommend Virgin America or Jet Blue for your trip since it's cross country. These carriers use airbus A310 series and have a 3500 mile range, so non stop is not a problem. SW uses 737 which have to stop at least once due to 2500 mile range ... You might want to consider that.

I've easily paid $100 more to avoid missing a connection. As Murphey has it, the connecting flight is usually on time ... the first one almost always will be delayed!

Save a life (namely yours) and even others. Most of all quitting smoking can save enough $$ to pay for a few chase expeditions as well!

The bug and crappy food CAN make you "feel" like hell ... Even after you "visited" Hell the past couple of expeditions you went on!!!!

Hey Jason Foster ... I looked up $14.50 for a pack in NY. Ouch! There's a friend of mine that has a buddy who smokes so much his car windows are brown! How he managed to live as long as he is old (around 50) is beyond me. His computer had to be repaired a few times because of the smoke and tar in his house. Ofcourse he's diabetic too ... You know how that goes ... His 2+ pack a day habit is like around $500 a month ... less the impending doom of medical problems (he doesn't have insurance either). Cigarettes KILLED both my mom (last year) and best friend from college (2007). And when I am around smokers the smoke always follows me no matter where I sit.
