Hey Roger Hill ... awesome. It almost appears a third tornado (or at least a satellite around the left "twin") may have been present in your picture. A hill prevented me from confirming that in my shot!

I was getting messages (like chris dont shoot your eye out) with my spotter network icon dead center in the eye. Visually the eye was foggy. Spend 5 hours on it before heading back east into the 85 mph eyewall.

So I see a Spanish version of my name making my "shame for a tropical system" in the atlantic! All that hype and postings the past week for ???? ... Probable just scared the hell out of a lot of people and utterly disappointed a few more (hurricane chasers). Cristobal is for the fishes and not much. In the Eastern Pacific ... Now that's something to be reckoned with. Maria is nearly a category 5 hurricane at sea as well as two other tropical systems all interacting! Welcome back to the mid to late 80's (less the mullets)!

Posted: Aug 22, 2014, 8:18 PM

Definitely the B path .. Path A is the BAM model and assumes a shallow weak cyclone, steered by the low level flow (< 850 mb). The other models are more governed by the mid level flow to 700 mb.

Hey Rich Hamek, the Shawnee tornado was yet a final tornado that developed ahead of the Chikasha storm. This was an intense "drill bit" type tornado that crossed I40. It hit the back of a semi truck flipping it and disintegrating the trailer. The driver was injured but OK as his cab was tossed into a ditch but otherwise intact. The tornado rapidly weakened and sheet metal from the truck torn apart rained down and clanking for a few minutes more. It was insane. Just Bill Hark and I were there.

El Nino inhibits storms in the Atlantic due to strong winds aloft / subtropical jet stream over that area (basically outflow from convection. In east Pacific). In the east pacific itself, shear remains light and warmer SSTs enhance hurricane development (like Pauline in 1997).

In hurricane Frances in 2004 in and south of Fort Pierce, FL the eye was 60 miles wide and moving at a little over 5 MPH with 105 MPH winds around it. It lasted 8 hours. Slept in it as well!

What happens WHEN (likely given the trends) it shears apart, hits the mountains in Hispaniola, or recurves?

Yup ... lots of people scared (and a few chasers disappointed - again) ... And even worse - a real threat (although not imminent) would NOT be taken seriously (cry wolf)!

We are clearly back in 1986 as far as patterns go. If I see that storm threatening Florida next week ... Then I'll be down there earlier. If not ... not a surprise.

I remember one day we had to leave to "beat weather" after a 90 minute delay. We were taxiing and next in line for takeoff when some "jerk" got up to get something for his kid from the overhead bin. They stopped for 2 to 3 minutes, as per FAA rules, to recheck everyone's seatbelts. 2 other planes passed us and took off ... That was it ... the storm got closer and we were denied takeoff. THREE hours after that ... we were airborne ... plus I git a whole unscheduled "sleep over" on the floor of Atlanta airport after missing connections. I was back in my work at 3 pm instead of 8 am because of someone who would not just SIT DOWN and STFU!

It's because the temperature is in the 90's and the dewpoint is in the 80's. Tampa is hotter than Miami due to lack of stronger seabreeze. Sweat doesn't evaporate well either in that high humidity so it doesn't cool much.

Posted: Aug 19, 2014, 12:29 PM

Shit ... the thunderstorms are 45 mins away. They'll have you back on the plane 5 minutes before they close the ramp for lightning ... like I said 10 mins to start ... 10 hour delay total :(

Hey Lori Ferguson ... My YouTube version was just "my piece" of the footage. I made a sampler from the DVD "Charley director's cut" that I had up for years and it directed me to a sales page if anyone wanted a copy (when each of us 6 people involved still had the DVDs to sell). It was also a 10 minute clip with footage from our group of six at the time (2004). Since then we all went independent. Last year in 2012 I was "threatened" by one of them to remove the video (my account was almost suspended for it) plus a "DMCA", whatever that is. So I removed it that same day and put mine up instead. Low and behold, several searches revealed clips from the same DVD as well as from the same video I had to take down ... Posted by some "kids" as well. Hopefully they were CC'd on my threatening "take it down or else..." messages too (?)

Unfortunately I was forced to take a short "sampler" video down due to a "copyright infringement" claim a couple years back ... So to really see it, you'll have to see the DVD we made on it.

My full chase log (with my version of the video / some from the DVD) for this storm is also below...

It's been nearly 9 years since any major hurricane (cat-3 at or above 111 MPH) hit the USA (Wilma in 2005 but Ike in 2008 "almost" counted)! 10 years ago today on Aug 13 myself and a group of chasers were in the core of strong cat-4 hurricane Charley in Punta Gorda (Florida). Again the tropics remain quiet in the Atlantic ...

... Seems like each year I post these "remember when" posts and nothing major happens! For anyone suffering from tropical chase withdrawals ... The link(s) below may help...

Hey Mona Lowenthal Krimsky ... The aforementioned "buddy" died in 2007 from diabetes at age 42. So not much for him to learn about I guess. As for my health insurance, Dave Lewison ... they (blue cross of FL ... Not crappy insurance) DO cover those things but after something like 2,500 lifetime out of pocket is first met. You would think money problems would make depression worse, so that sure is sad. As for me ... had mild depression after my mom passed last year and while in Florida struggling there before Jan 2014. Seems like a change in location, a few major tornado intercepts, and hurricane chasing helped that quite a bit :)

Depressed people are not "crazy". They need help ... But some people treat them the SAME way as NOT helping a person needing CPR (just because it's a "mental" illness). My health insurance even has a clause on it saying "mental health services are NOT covered". Yet a buddy of mine blared out a comment "Well, that's because 'crazy' people shouldn't get benefits and just NOT act that way ... It's easy!" ... WTF?

... Does this tell us something?

It's a "stigma" that troubled people have to deal with ... It's total effing BS ... And most of all ... It's just cruel and unfair.

I'm almost to the point where these "extraordinary" people are just special "spirits" who come here in human form to spread joy and inspiration ... then leave early when God (or something) decides their "mission" is done here. Look at big inventors (Hughes, Tesla, Edison, etc) ... They were not "normal" people and also suffered from mental / social hardship ... But left us with very good things (an angel in a way).

Memorial ash-spreading (ash plume visible in top of image) from a deceased skydiver who perished in a ultra-light plane crash (non skydiving related) at Skydive Chicago (Aug 9, 2014). The cremated remains were dispersed from his wife doing a tandem jump. In this picture, the break-away and opening of the big way can be seen with the ash plume above the jumpers (over a mile above Skydive Chicago).

Hey Joshua ... the forward right quadrant is usually the worst winds. This is for the northern hemisphete. The convection is most intense (convective chimney) and storm motion adds to the storm winds. So if a storm is moving west the winds are worst on the North and NW side, but on the S and SE side if moving east. In the S hemisphere, it's the forward left quadrant (clockwise rotation).

I thought a potentiometer was a variable resistor and not a weather instrument as mentioned in the movie mounted on the Titus. The chasers were pretty typical and the school scene as well as the two teens trapped in water was a creepy reminder of Moore on 5/20 last year. Interesting the setting was june 16 and there were twin tornadoes almost exactly like Pilger, NE on that same dare in the movie.

Awesome ... Movie did have some very typical chaser moments ... Twin tornadoes almost exactly like Pilger on june 16 ... same date in movie too lol. But a "potentiometer" is not a weather instrument you mount on a chase vehicle.

Interesting radar (reflectivity) out of the big Island of Hawaii early on 8/8 as Iselle makes landfall as a strong tropical storm. Note the heavy rains but the high terrain causes no radar coverage west and NW of the radar site. I wonder how the 14,000 foot volcanic summits are affected by this?

Hey Greg ... take a look at one of my "ranting" posts from the afternoon of Aug 1. Three lanes on the I90 toll road at 2 PM with construction forcing 3 lanes into 1 ... And a two hour wait (all paid for by the IL toll way)! Had 3:35 flight to catch, left at 1 PM ... Got to airport at 3:45 (normally takes 45 mins) ... My flight was delayed (luckily) to 4:30 so I still made it. Like on my post ... Do construction at NIGHT!

Hey Greg ... I90 in Chicago is a toll road and it has most construction done DURING rush hour! Horrible paying to be stuck in traffic. The skyway is on the south side, never been on it, but it does not accept toll transponders the same way as the other toll ways. I guess it also being owned by a foreign company makes sense ... I wonder if it's the same one as the 407?

Julio might bump a little north due to the influence of Iselle. The Fujiwara effect in a sense. This may spare Hilo in a sense if the LEFT side of Julio passes by. Iselle will affect Hilo as well, but not as a hurricane.
