Chris Collura commented on Lori Ferguson's post.

Yeah Lori Ferguson ... the real salt in a wound was that day I was watching something really good on the science channel and the TV just went blank. That was the moment the channel was pulled. I waited and nothing while all other channels worked. A week later I found out adding the science channel back would be only $50 more on the $122 a month I was already paying! Then a month later it rose to $138. I cancelled and kept just the Internet and get local HD from antenna. I went down to return the receiver and the line was into the street! Oh, and pull the plug and not the cord? No I just yanked it out by the receiver.

Chris Collura commented on Lori Ferguson's post.

Hey Katt Alvarez ... cable company yanked the channel. Problem solved.

Posted: Jul 30, 2014, 3:47 PM

Chris Collura commented on Lori Ferguson's post.

Don't get SyFy here ... yet I get 20 HBO and showtime stations at the hotel. I HATE cable TV ... I remember before I cancelled it last year my company kept pulling off channels (comcast). The SyFy and Science channels were the first to go. Then NatGeo was pulled ... even OLN ... which I was suckered into telling George Kourounis I would tape something for him only to later find out it was no longer there. I even see SyFy on the remote control guide (paper) here in my room ... But the flipping through the 50+ TV channels doesnt have it ... Proving it was pulled. Screw cable.

I saw these and was wondering if you were going out there?

These appear to be trapped ice melting and caving in ... and with a release of natural gas in an explosion. Would not want to be near one of these when they form!

Posted: Jul 30, 2014, 8:16 AM

Chris Collura commented on his own post.

Interesting Jerry Prsha ... I also remember a PCM box that would take audio, digitize it, and record it to VHS tape as a video signal. Then do the opposite playing back for CD quality sound at 16 bits.

Posted: Jul 30, 2014, 7:30 AM

Chris Collura commented on his own post.

Hey Jerry Prsha ... I remember back in the late 80's early 90's the 9 track data tapes. Fortunately still too young then to see the punch cards! My first job was doing backups and night operations on the 10.5" 9 track reels. At about 150 MB each (mega ... not giga) it usually took 4 to back up the system. Roughly 600 MB (two disk drives nearly full at 300 MB each with 14" platters). Those were the days of moving parts!

Posted: Jul 30, 2014, 7:04 AM

Chris Collura commented on his own post.

Yeah Jerry Prsha ... in that case a pencil was a bit useless. The funny thing is that I had hundreds of tapes, digitized all the audio to MP3 and its a total of 6.5 gb and fits on a single 8 gb thumb drive. Literally a book box of tapes. 500 CDs also digitized ... takes 9 gb MP3 at 128k. Also my old vhs and beta tapes were converted to video MPG along with jpg of family photos. All digital and backed up in several places ... mechanical stuff eat that!!!!

So how do you think the world will end? Based on current events it will not be something we storm chasers will indulge in (in our last moments) as I was hoping. No big flood, no planet wide swarm of tropical cyclones nor tornadoes ... just all of us dying a slow lingering death (probably from Ebola or the like)! Kinda boring ... I was planning on a killer chase vehicle ... disappointed it will be just "condoms and test tubes" :(

Heard a sad story about a buddie's wife yesterday who tried to commit suicide (years back) and still had the scars on her hands. I broke down hearing that. She's OK now thanks to my buddy helping her but one word to all ... Suicide is stupid and a "permanent solution to a temporary problem" !!! Anyone even thinking about it (or even wishing they die) must GET HELP now !!! Life is too precious. Also - Anyone (like by buddy) preventing someone doing that is nothing more than an angel.

They left the cabinet and put an opaque front on it just to "impress" people visiting our IT Datacenter! Back then if it was gigantic it was assumed to be weak!

Chicago yearly skydiving boogie coming up this weekend! I plan on jumping from over 20,000 feet early Saturday morning. Haven't done that in about 3 years after the drop zone in FL cancelled theirs thanks to the FAAs red tape. The only concern will be layering my clothes and trying to find gloves as it can be -25 F up there! Takes roughly 2 minutes to fall almost 4 miles.

There is science here too. The lower pressure (7500 feet equivalent) cabin altitude causes it! Its the lower pressure outside your body ... And you can push a toxic fart into the older cloth seats on some planes - especially American Airlines md-80 jets - Nobody notices (until either you get up and next one sits there and "reactivates" it) ... Try that on Southwest and it just bounces back right at you and is LOUD off their new nonporous seats! On a skydiving plane at 14,000' unpressurized ... oh boy!

Thanks Josh Morgerman ... Nice to have two guys covering both "basins" at the same time! I gotta get some westPAC under my belt too! That negative surge was eerie ... seeing the Pamlico sound with no water in it. Then after the wind shift it rapidly became a destructive positive surge! I am kinda regretting staying there and wondering how fast it switched ... maybe a bore (wall of water) pushing back in...

The guns are not the problem ... just a machine that accelerates lead and antimony to transonic speeds :) ... People with issues who HAVE guns are 99% of the problem! I doubt any law would help. People and their childhood abuse / agression and unattended mental illness is why this got so hopelessly bad...

I believe so Dave Lewison ... if not 240 definitely 120. It also has a sports or "golf" mode for a stroboscopic effect like a golfer swinging.

Guys ... I have had the NX70 since May and it's a really nice little camera. It comes with a boom mike that attaches with a handle with 2 XLR inputs for great wind noise suppression. Using the internal mike is not bad either ... the water and dust resistance has me sold on this and it worked great all throughout hurricane Arthur. The low light is also adjustable by setting the gain (up to 21 db) as well as a lower shutter (30 fps or so), and f as low as 1.8. There are also a 240 fps slow motion mode that acts when you release the button and keeps a 4 second window before and after. But I'm yet to play with that in detail...

Wow ... the howling you describe must be the storm wall interacting with the ocean air interface. I heard that over the ocean back in 2005 with 150 mph Dennis offshore ... wondering how you can still get a wind roar over water .. oh, cuz the water is NOT flat (50+ foot waves are disrupting the airflow just like hills would)!

Jeez .. OK catch my breath! I'm sitting on the plane returning to Chicago and putting my bag in overhead and WHOP!!!! "IT hits me ... WTF - Wheres my smaller bag?" ... In other words, the one with the new Sony NX70U amongst other cameras?

That's right Chris "you DONT have it"! I bolt back off the plane and run 1/4 mile back through concourse and to security. The TSA agent apparently saw me winded from running and was already handing it to me. I was back on the plane with a minute to spare! Hats off to TSA!

Either I'm getting old or hurricane chasing and it's excitement made me lose my brain for a bit! Found out the culprit was I got confused since there were no trays and took lots of stuff from the main bag, leaving the one with the csmera on it at the entrance to the x-ray ... what scares me is the 15 to 20 minute long brain fart from there to my seat on the plane ... Lol

Just about to leave chicago and headed to coastal NC by this evening. Arthurs radar presentation this morning is looking very nice and tonight I will not be surprised if it's a high and cat 1 borderline 2 over palmico sound. For now I'm targeting just south of kill devil hills and southward along 12. Final target to be refined tonight. Too bad it's coming in at night. It's what it is...

Watching this closely ... From a hurricane chasing standpoint ... there may be more cons on this than pros. I can make the trip but the possibility of a night storm and left side of it have me a bit discouraged. Still ... High surf and heavy rains will affect these areas. Complacency is the concern ... weak storms can still kill!
