Chasercon ice-breaker dinner at Famous Dave's BBQ restaurant near Stapleton. It's going to be a busy day most of tomorrow. Nice to see the storm chasers who made it out!

Chris Collura commented on Bill Hark's post.

I bet if this was a decade or two ago the coronavirus would have been just "another severe winter cold", after all, that's basically what it is.

Chris Collura commented on Doug Kiesling's post.

See you there too Doug Kiesling, and George Kourounis, it's an honor to see you there too!

Lori Ferguson It weird, I checked it again (SW airlines site) and its down to $65. But I got it taken care of. Weird.

Marie A Schappacher Exactly. The elderly and those with weak systems are at risk, just like any other cold or flu.

Chris Collura added a new photo.

Hard Rock cafe and casino, viewed from departing 737 aircraft on Jan 27, 2020 heading west out of FLL enroute to Denver. The main hotel building is a huge guitar, signature to Hard Rock. FAA regulations prevented a guitar "handle", so high intensity light beams shine skyward instead, very much like the Luxor pyramid hotel in Las Vegas by night.

Jason Foster Yup. Events totally unrelated to what I have to do. I call it the "Spring Break effect" :(

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 3:50 PM

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Matt Ashworth Ofcourse not all of them. I honor the ones who got their manners and mindset in order - And a common thread to those are those who had good parents.

Also living in CA the past year exposed me to some rude people, so ofcourse where you are makes a difference. Here in Denver people are generally nice and well mannered, regardless of age.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 3:48 PM

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Skip Talbot My first sentence is "people in general". I see the rudeness all the time. I am always polite and nice, but it seems to not work.

Skip I hope you are right about this.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 3:44 PM

Chris Collura replied to Bill Hark's comment.

Bill Hark I actually got a car there, but booked it over a month ago for $150. But going with just using my dads since he is away.

I always check and usually see deals come up last minute or within a week of the trip.

Last trip I had a car reservation for $200, then a few days before I checked it and it was $80, just cancelled it and booked the cheaper one. Done that a few times.

This is a big rant since this time the prices just exploded upwards.

Chris Collura commented on Neva Andersen's post.

Dont scare Doug Kiesling from coming to Chasercon.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 3:40 PM

Chris Collura replied to Jean Hilliard Barnes's comment.

The coronavirus is more like that of a common cold (just a really bad cold). Flu vaccines are totally different and wont affect it. Even worse, like the common cold (rhinovirus is a subset of coronaviruses), there is no treatment, no vaccine, and no cure. So your immune system is the only way to survive it.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 3:40 PM

Chris Collura replied to Dave Hansen's comment.

Dave Hansen more people are killed by the flu and common cold complications.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 12:23 PM

Chris Collura replied to Jason Foster's comment.

Jason Foster Its been high since November probably from the tourist season. But last year these were $12 a day. I found out that anything under $65 a day (1980s prices) is rare over the past few months.

I used to book air first, then the car, now it's the other way around. It's more than FOUR TIMES the flight.

Compact car for 3 days: $660.
Airfare (r/t): $149.
Using my dads car: Priceless.

Note: This is 2/8 to 2/10. Way after the stupid super bowl.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 12:22 PM

Chris Collura replied to John Planco's comment.

John Planco Its been like that for months. Last year in Dec and Jan I rented cars in FLL for $12 a day.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 12:05 PM

Getting sick of this shit. I'm only down there (FLL) for 3 days next week. Never seen rental cars like this. Gouging at its finest.

Posted: Jan 30, 2020, 7:43 AM

Chris Collura commented on William T. Reid's post.

I wonder if he just climbed? These low clouds and fog are often a thin "marine" layer no more 2000 feet thick. He probably could have climbed above them and diverted somewhere else, and would again be in contact with ATC and radar vectored if needed. This is so tragic and maybe a result of bad decisions and loss of situational awareness.

Doug Kiesling Yeah that was at the Radisson that year (2006, when people not at that convention thought people were stealing hurricane chasing video). It was near the Cherry Creek reservoir. One chaser ran cables from his generator in his truck for the equipment when the power went out. Fort Morgan was -19 deg F that night.

I hate the city scene, never any parking, and if you do find parking its expensive. Also just too many crowds of stuck up people I'm not a fan of.

Yeah, the farthest I'll go is the outer suburbs to spend time in. A rural setting is my favorite.

Chris Collura commented on Skip Talbot's post.

That's so cool. Wildlife is everywhere out there and would take over / occupy anything man made you put out there.

ChaserCon is this weekend, too bad you'll not be making it. I'm wondering if this will be the last ChaserCon (?).

Ofcourse I have the convenience of just driving 15 minutes or so to ChaserCon!

Chris Collura commented on Erik Toth's post.

The bottom of these lakes lies a super saturated solution of carbonic water (aka seltzer / soda pop). Pressures keep it at bay, until it is perturbed (landslide, earthquake, flood entering lake), like shaking up soda bottle and opening it.

Carbon dioxide is highly toxic and will asphyxiate anyone in low areas (it's about twice as heavy as air).

Its a bad way to go too, not just passing out, due to carbonic acidosis of the blood, like being held underwater and you are "craving" for air. There is spasms and convulsions and its painful.

Jamie D. Elliott-Smith You got lucky. FLL and LAX all had deals in the 20s a day, but the cheapest I see from now until 3 or 4 months out are like rates from the 1980s, at least $60 and up per day.

Russell Schmehl Yes. It's not SW. My point was after landing a great deal on SW (as I love them and always fly them) or any airline then get screwed with the car.

Elizabeth Summers Sroka Nothing to do with SW for car rentals. They're high across the boards due to gouging.

Chris Collura commented on Southwest Airlines's post.

Airfares are cheap UNTIL you book and committ to them, then try to book a rental car. The air ticket can literally be 1/5 of the cost of the car rental, which can exceed $100 a day for an "economy" car. No thanks.

Brett Castro I think that process is called "regalation", the similar way applying pressure to ice below freezing melts it, like making a snowball. Lowering the air pressure causes water vapor to condense. Physics at its finest.

It is quite interesting how oil heat hung on up there. I remember you explained that in another post due to the infrastructure. I guess if it works, keep it, and keep the jobs too. In the Midwest and Chicago I only see natural gas, rarely heating oil.

I actually refrained from taking too many pain killers, they simply postpone the recovery, not shorten it. I just take a sleep aid as that seemed to help. Fortunate it was a short work week.
