And the "Old Skool" term itself did't come to be until around the late 90s anyway, mainly with Millenials referring to years back. Seeing this is heart breaking, and some people would actually be suckered into spending that kind of money. That's whats sad. Always do your homework or you'll get into big trouble in your "old school" ;)

Colt Forney Yeah that was me years back (~1992) with my long hair... in a Cessna 152 doing a zero G pushover :)

And unlike in mainland California, no 2+ hour long traffic jams and 50,000 people taking selfies standing in there.

Doug Kiesling Yeah I can imagine that. Probably some of our old rivals or something.

Jack Corso Oh my God I was literally spouting every cuss word I learned in NY middle school like a sailor.

Last week I was so frustrated I just turned around. Google maps showed green then within seconds everyone stopped. And I checked again and saw solid RED on Google maps the entire 20 mile stretch.

Of course, like spring break ruining travel plans, what I was doing (going to Elsinore skydive place) was totally unrelated to what the other 50,000 people on that same road were (poppy viewing).

Then there is Murphys law ... Where do you think the traffic jam ended? Yup ... Right at MY EXIT.

At least I got to see an older Asian lady plow right into someone as everyone stopped short at the "leading edge" of that traffic jam. Probably looked at her phone for 0.5 seconds.

Another accident (not causing the traffic jam) had emergency crews extracting someone from a vehicle as well (jaws of life and all). Rolled down my window and heard the paramedic saying "you're gonna be alright" ... Saw the same orange flowers in her hair too.

Chris Collura commented on Lisa Beal's post.

What the heck is that?

Posted: Mar 26, 2019, 3:59 PM

Chris Collura commented on Doug Kiesling's post.

That live streaming was causing nothing but hassles from accidents to $900+ monthly bills on our data plans anyways.

Posted: Mar 26, 2019, 3:52 PM

Chris Collura replied to his own comment.

Jack Corso And completely jamming a major interstate. Even missed the best part of the storm thanks to that. How about emergency vehicles or other far more important things?

Out here (California) there is a rare so called "super bloom" of poppy flowers in the mountains. Thousands of people stop along I-15 out here to look at the flowers. Dont get me wrong, its pretty, but when a 20 mile drive takes 100+ minutes instead of 15 it becomes a serious issue.

And people died because of it ... Mainly ambulances trying to rush victims (mainly heart attacks) to the ER where they probably would have made it. They died (while enroute) because it took 20 minutes to go the 2 mile route to the hospital. All because of jackasses looking at fkowers.

Posted: Mar 26, 2019, 3:50 PM

Chris Collura replied to Jack Corso's comment.

Jack Corso Yeah. I think if you eat something in California you'll get cancer.

Chris Collura commented on Skip Talbot's post.

Plus the possibility that some media outlets who put crew out in the field may also have little or no "storm chasing" experience.

Basically a lead forecaster (at the studio) tells them "go here and wait for further instructions" and they basically have no self guidance or decisions.

We also see this alot with chasing hurricanes. Many media chasers are out there when they shouldn't be.

Chris Collura commented on Stormtrack's photo.

The 4 miles wide circulation was probably aloft or not at tornado speeds out to that width.

El Reno was 2.6 miles wide with tornadic winds / subvortices all AT the ground.

Also, the Pilger twin tornadoes in June 2016 merged into a circulation that was 4.25 miles across (by DOWs) BUT not at ground level.

Jason Foster, now when I chase I am trying to keep the vehicle low key. Yeah there's the hail guards which can be unstowed and attached, but the only light that flashes is a small amber light in the back and some camera / antenna mounts.

Nothing that is unneeded. In other words only use what is needed for that type of chase.

Having extra lights, sirens, huge decals will only land you with lots of attention - most of which isnt wanted (violations with law / codes, people following you, even people potentially stealing equipment).

Chris Collura commented on Stephen Skelly's post.

Yeah, Stephen Skelly, Chicago has taken a dump socially over the past few years. I worked up there in the last good part of the NW suburbs but now if I go there I'm confronted by money grubbing / shady people even there and no longer feel safe. It's even sadder as I physically saw the people in general change and become hostile from 2014 to 2016. Down right creepy if you ask me.

Doug Kiesling and I saw those in the hurricane surf just before Hurricane Michael came in last October. Most waves came as huge swells from the south but this weird waves from the east almost sideways before the brunt of the surge.

Posted: Mar 4, 2019, 9:19 AM

Chris Collura commented on Randy Dean Hicks's post.

If I was in FL now I most likely would NOT have chased this. The fast motions, visibility, and terrain aren't good chasing in that region. Plus even picking the right storm there would still be hard to see the tornado. Coming across that town destroyed would be absolutely heart breaking.

Dave Lewison Its from an extremely successful young chaser who is on nearly every setup and tornado with such. Looks like he swerved into the lane briefly. Frighteningly, It happens to many of us, including myself once in a blue moon. That's all I got to say.

Posted: Mar 4, 2019, 8:56 AM

Chris Collura commented on Colt Forney's post.

I always try to stop. I did so in 2010 in Yazoo MS (EF4) and Fairdale, IL in 2015 (EF4+). But dont attempt to help if you aren't trained in such work and wont put yourself in a deadly situation as well (entering unstable structures, power lines down, etc). Jason Persoff highlighted this in detail at ChaserCon multiple times.

The point is if you CAN stop, and do so / help safely, do it. There really isn't any "distance" limit.

In Yazoo MS in 2010 I stopped and helped clear the roads and assisted some folks there. I know Reed Timmer was there too assisting people that day.
