Chris Collura updated his status.

This is my video (and full chase log) of hurricane Michael affecting coastal NW Florida east of Panama City / Springfield and north of Mexico Beach / Tyndall Air Force Base on October 10, 2018 in Bay County.

The video shows the violent category 4 (or even 5) winds with catastrophic damage as well as the calm eye as hurricane Michael struck the area, making landfall near Mexico Beach.

The video shows the inner eyewall and winds gusting well over 150 MPH with catastrophic damage as well as a view of the calm and clear eye, second half, and aftermath.

The footage also includes the traffic and closures as I-10 is cleared of debris well inland the following day on October 11.

iCyclone Quite a challenge though. I remember chasing like that in the early 90s. No wifi nor access to mobile radar data. Just used a map and the coordinate fixes (NOAA weather radio) with a pencil and was quite successful getting in the eye. Sometimes we all have to revert back to this. Good work.

Dalton Do Not only Apple. As some car parts are different as well as camera gear. But I believe (and honor) interchangeable parts. I see many aircraft and specialized equipment (including rides at Six Flags or fairs) that use hydraulic machinery or gear parts from truck / automotive common suppliers. Called "off the shelf" parts, it makes repairs and maintenance MUCH cheaper and quicker turn around time getting the parts quickly (wait for days, not months, to get a part from a heavy equipment supplier than custom made up at Huss or Intamin).

But I'm not going to argue with anyone who is comfortable with Apple products.

Dalton Do Because we dont like when companies design a product in an awkward manner. Just allow room for two cables when engineering the product. I had a terrible experience with the older iPhone back in the day, which worked perfectly with a costly Bose system I had. When I got the upgraded iPhone 5 the connector was the same but didnt work. Planned obsolescence at its finest, and at the customers expense. Sorry but that's the way geeks are.

Dave Lewison Its micro USB basically a half a mm above the HDMI port. The 120v cord goes directly into the box. The power supply is inside it.

Posted: Oct 26, 2018, 11:27 AM

Chris Collura replied to Dalton Do's comment.

Yeah Dalton Do, I do agree that Apple caters to customer service and ease of setup for less IT savvy folks.

However, many of us are down right fed up with having to purchase additional cables and put up with proprietary stuff.

My co worker eventually got that box hooked up. The fix was what Dave Lewison commented on using a slimmer cable. After about 3 trips to different stores we found one (Apple ofcourse) ... Spending $49 on it too - And he had 3 HDMI cables laying around doing nothing (the ones that didnt fit).

At the end of the day I can tell he is not a happy customer.

Had the port been just a millimeter higher (or better yet, in a better place on the Apple TV box) none of this BS would have happened. I'm sorry I'm an engineer and see these things.

But yeah, we hooked it up and it WORKED. Its Apple. Forcing you to BUY...

Posted: Oct 26, 2018, 8:12 AM

Chris Collura replied to Dave Lewison's comment.

I tried a few of them. Probably the thinnest and slimmest of both cables would work. Just none available ... Sucks when you have to run out and buy stuff only to try it and it dont fit.

Had they designed the ports with better spacing, cables would fit and apple would stop losing customers.

Awesome footage. I noticed that one last violent "ring" of wind at the "boundary" of the eye. I noticed it in other hurricanes too. So it's probably anatomically the same in the hurricane / typhoon inner core flow (?) ... Just more pronounced in Michael.

Imagine in Yutu in Saipan Tainan how that "last burst" of wind was (cringe)?

Structures themselves look pretty robust (like in Puerto Rico). But the trees look like winter (defoliated) and palms / vegetation shredded.

Posted: Oct 25, 2018, 8:27 AM

Chris Collura replied to Isïtolo Sîale's comment.

iCyclone And most importantly the "question of the day" is "how strong will it be?" ... This storm (Yutu, soon to be named Rosita by PAGASA) explosively intensified in a short time before approaching Saipan - AND JTWC reported 20 knots of shear on it. Still it bombed.

Same with hurricane Michael. Went from a tropical storm to nearly a category 5 storm in 36 hours, despite moderate shear and low ocean heat content in the gulf of Mexico (upper airflow helped Michael bomb out).

For those reading this a "bomb cyclone" is any storm with more than 1 mb per hour pressure drop.

Finally there was Florence in NC ... But the opposite, expected a category 4, but was a 1 when it came in.

The point is the most challenging forecast is the intensity, not so much the track.

This is a view of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Station from along Interstate 15 near Nipton, California (San Bernardino County). It at the base of Clark Mountain which is close to Primm, Nevada. The planned output is near 377 megawatts and has been completed / commissioned in 2014. Thousands of sun-tracking mirrors, called heliostats, focus the sunlight on each of 3 "receiver" units atop towers. The concentrated light cases the tower receivers to get extremely hot, heating water inside them to high-pressure steam, turning a turbo-generator and generating electricity. The glare from the white-hot tower receivers can be seen for many miles and appear as giant light bulbs.Place: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & EventsAddress: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & Events

Under-exposed view of one of the receivers atop the tower during operation, glowing white hot. Excess steam is venting from the top (the actual steam turbines and generators are on the ground in a building next to the tower and not visible in this picture). Note the intense solar flux (concentrated sunlight Tyndall scattering in the air near the tower). The mirrors (heliostats) can be seen in the foreground and could be heard "clicking" every few seconds as they slowly move and keep the sun pointed at the receiver towers. There are three of these towers, with a total of 173,500 heliostat mirrors across the facility.Place: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & EventsAddress: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & Events

This is the "Roton" or Rotary Rocket that is on permanent display along a street corner in the Mojave Air and Space Port. The ATV (atmospheric test vehicle) of this prototype proved to be unsuccessful, with a helicopter rotor being at the top of the vehicle. The intent of the project was to use a helicopter mode to reach high altitude, then retract the blades and transition to rocket powered flight. When returning and back in the atmosphere, the vehicle would switch back to helicopter mode and land. This concept was abandoned due to lack of funding.Place: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & EventsAddress: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & Events

The iconic beam of the Luxor Hotel and Casino shining into the night sky in late October 2018. The beam comes from a 50 foot lamp-house at the top the pyramid with 39 7,000 watt Xenon lights totaling 273 kilowatts and producing a beam visible for 275 miles (pilots flying over Los Angeles during a clear night can see the beam). How about their electric bill? Well, if all 39 lights are lit (after 2008 they use half to save energy), it costs $51 an hour just to keep the lights on and the lamp room becomes hot enough to bake a cake (300 deg F)!Place: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & EventsAddress: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & Events

The Hoover Dam itself is over 726 feet high and is also used to generate electricity with an output of over 2,000 megawatts. The dam began operating in 1936 (taking nearly 6 years to build). Lake Mead, created by the dam, spans up to 247 square miles, with a maximum depth of 590 feet.Place: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & EventsAddress: Various Places (Europe, USA, Central America, Etc) & Events

South is the island of Tinian is an old airbase / bombing range in the north and a low lying village of San Jose on the southern tip.

The crappy thing is this is like a large and violent tornado hitting Tinian, the southern part of Madera / Saipan. And at NIGHT. Most of the storm core will pass before sunrise local time so documenting this would be almost impossible for anyone there.

Pray for those locals on there. This is not something that you see hitting land at this intensity.

Scary thing is the ball is weighted to fall at higher terminal velocity. In this case, since the jumpers are head down, they (and the ball) are hurtling towards earth at 150 to 180 MPH (instead of 120 if they were belly flying).

If they dont recover that ball by the time they open their chutes, and it gets "dropped" ... The ball will continue to earth at about 160 MPH. And it will HIT HARD, and can even kill.

Jessica Weeks In a vacuum, yes. In the atmosphere air resistance causes falling objects to reach terminal velocity. A feather has a low terminal velocity. A cannon ball much higher.

Its 160 MPH category 5 (but with pressure 5 mb higher than Michael last week) ... Meaning it's a very small hurricane. Nailing the landfall in this area will be tricky as the storm will come ashore in an area without many towns along the coast.

I'm hoping for a daytime landfall (late afternoon it looks like). Maybe you'll be a few miles inland like El Rosario or Villa Union (Highway 15).

Interesting sight off I 15 near the California / Nevada border is what looks like 3 giant light bulbs ... This is the Ivanpah Solar Generating station. Thousands of mirrors focus sunlight on each of 3 central receivers - Heating them nearly white hot. This creates steam to create a turbine.Unfortunately this seemingly "green and renewable" energy station has been known to instantly fry birds in mid air if they fly into the concentrated sunlight! More subtle the used land is endangering desert tortoises.

In some other countries (esp SE Asia) people "squat" and don't "sit" on commodes built lower or into the floor (Turkish toilets). But on a "sit down" (Western) toilet, some folks are trying to stand on the rims and squat, causing a dangerous slip and fall risk ... Or the bowl / floor can also be "soiled" by those with poor aim.

You're never going to get gusts that are close to maximum sustained winds mainly because these measurements are made over land and not at the ocean-air interface (open marine exposure) as well as many if not all the instruments failing in the peak wind areas before the max winds.

To the lower right side and bottom, the clouds denote warmer water outside the cold wake.

These are two images showing hurricane Michael. The left image shows a close up of the storm eye offshore on the 15:20z visible satellite image (around 10:20 AM CDT). The eyewall of the storm core, with cumulonimbus clouds 10-12 miles high, surrounds a visually clear and calm eye, and presents an appearance of a sports "stadium" or large "teacup" due to the late morning sun angle. The small "X" in the left image shows our general location where myself and my chase group was with (near Calloway, FL, which is east of Panama City). The right image is the base reflectivity NWS radar image at around 1 PM to 1:30 CDT out of Elgin Air Force Base. The clear eye of the storm has made landfall and is moving to the NNE. Around the eye is the red region indicating violent (wind swept and horizontal) rain. The red dots are storm chasers / Spotter Network positions. My location is the blow cross-hairs, and I am just inside the northwestern portion of the calm eye. My group and I measured barometric pressures as low as 923 mb inside that portion of the eye. The "light radar returns" inside the eye are not clouds, but most likely birds caught up in it.

This image is an enhanced infrared satellite image of hurricane Michael just about to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle just before noon central time (16:50z). The cloud tops are extremely cold, meaning they are tall and reach extreme altitudes (around 60,000 feet), where the temperatures are -80 C (well below -100 deg F) or lower. The clear eye can be seen just off Mexico Beach / Panama City at the time, which is nearly devoid of any clouds. At this point the storm was max'd out, with 155 MPH sustained winds (approaching category 5 strength) and a central pressure of 919 mb!

This image s a visible satellite image of hurricane Michael approaching the Florida Panhandle at about 10:20 AM CDT (15:20z). The storm is still rapidly intensifying with winds approaching 150 MPH at the time. The "stadium" effect makes the clear eye reminiscent as a "cup" due to the morning sun angle. Note the symmetry of the store core region (eyewall) and nearly perfect upper-level anticyclonic outflow in all quadrants.

This is a chase map for hurricane Michael for October 9 to 11, 2018. The storm track is denoted by the yellow swath in the main map graphic (mainly the hurricane core and eye) as well as the inset (path of eye) in the lower left. Blue paths indicate chase and driving paths, including the "ferry" to and from the main target area (the square in the main graphic in the Florida Panhandle). The main location where the storm core and eye passage was observed is denoted by the small "X" in the lower left target insert. In the lower center inset, the National Hurricane Center storm wind swaths and path is shown in a composite image. The orange and red areas denote the path of tropical storm and hurricane forced winds, respectively, stretching from the NW Caribbean off Central America to the US Carolinas. Brad Hudson Because of the actual gradient across the eye wall amongst other dynamics that are hard to explain.

Also a hurricane intensifying will show a low pressure but take a lag of time before the winds catch up (mass response / inertia). Kinda like a car accelerating as the gas pedal is pushed. The top speed don't occur instantly. It has to ramp up.

Had it stayed at 919 mb eventually the winds would pick up to Cat 5 threshold probably.

Even more impressive was the aircraft vortex message and 18 deg C at 10,000 feet in the eye ... Upper 60s F (instead of 30s) :/

In the eye I watched some clouds that clearly were sinking and evaporating in the central downdraft.

Took us a half a day (10 hours) just to leave Callaway and make it to I 10 late Thursday. Pictures dont do any justice. The destruction is exactly like a high end tornado (just thousands of times larger). Horrific.

Also the left side had an intense and HUGE hot convective tower within the northern and NE eyewall at time of landfall. Like how it defied intensity dynamics, this storm was strange in many ways scientifically.

By mid October I will be over this. Sorry. But I lost my mom on Sept 12, 2013 (oh my, that God aweful year (after El Reno at 6 PM in OK going forward). This time it was simple shopping for some stuff. And saw rubbing alcohol. Then reminded me of an absolutely wonderful thing my mom did back in the 80s when I was a kid and sick with the flu.She rubs me down reducing my 106 fever. Singing to me. Massaging my forehead. And I felt better within minutes. If you have a mom = thank her. I was so close to her until both cancer (and all the bad luck in 2013 after May 31) ripped her from my life. No one will ever replace her.Walked out of Walmart with tears rolling down my face. Running to car so no one sees a 49 year old crying like a baby. F'cking sucks.
