Back home in Florida after chasing hurricane Irene on Saturday in NC ... Working on chase log and it will be available in a day or so.

Ahh, dead calm winds, drizzle, inside ragged eye of Irene and waiting for waters to recede. Warm in here - In the warm core ;-) Near Smyrna, NC on Highway 70 N of Cape Lookout.

Currently sitting in the dark just east of Beufort, NC getting pounded with outer portions of Irene's eyewall. Too dark for pictures, eagerly waiting eye passage near sunrise.

Currently en-route for Cat-2 intercept (Ike 2008's massive core size) of Hurricane Irene with prelimilary target near Morehead city. Should be a morning landfall there, then across the Palmico sound and into the NE USA (but weakening after hitting NC). The surge and waves will be MUCH larger than "typical" cat-2 storms. Updates to come...

Just booked tickets for North Carolina and for Saturday hurricane intercept. Wish me luck. Waves even in S Florida are HUGE, with waves sweeping over a seawall and observed injuring at least 5 people in Boynton Beach during the afternoon of 8-25. Hurricane surf is NOTHING to mess with!

Watching Irene and it now appears NC is in the cross-hairs. A weekend hurricane chase - Gotta love it!

Watching tropical storm "Irene" ... This one should be interesting.

Weekend here ... Let's see, TS Harvey moving into the mangroves of Belize, and a trough off the SE US ... No tropical threats for some time (still). I'll jump out of an airplane and visit parents Saturday, and see some folks at my church Sunday.

Tropics quiet for now (heck, anything would miss the US anyway so it's a good thing). Posted a few severe storm pictures from years past over the FL Everglades. Work busy this week, but certainly not boring!

Weekend here ... Tropics still ONLY an interest to "Fish n' Ships". When I see the easterly flow back, and planes departing EAST out of FLL ... Then I'll look and see what's "brewing" to the east.

Tropics not active as of Mid August. Big east-coast trough will "protect" for the next couple of weeks (yes, WEEKS). I always called a persistant trough (like 2009 and 2010) a "vaccinating" trough (or, more so the "condom" trough) ... Basically the SE US is immune to Cape Verde systems as long as it is "in place" - Planes taking off WEST out of FLL airport = No canes for a while ;-(

Geez ... Aweful dream last night - Joplin, MO on May 22 as being the first on the scene. Jeff Pitrowski had that ugly task. I was there after him. Storm chasing sometimes is not always "severe weather wonders" ... Sometimes it's REAL "terror and horror" that you do not have to go to the movies to see ;-(

Pretty good weekend then back to work. Emily was a wimpy storm and is gone. I re-posted my 2005 hurricane Wilma video after I discovered it was sitting on YouTube for many months without sound (duh) - proof your video edits!!!

Raining and dreary on the western fringes of TD Emily here in S Florida as of 7 PM. Got a great day of skydiving in plus a different view of the storm on it's western edges earlier in the day from SW of Lake Okeechobee!

Gonna try to get a skydive in before rains move in later this afternoon. Really nice in the subsidence west of Emily's remnants in the Bahamas.

Maybe the "remnants' of Emily will pull a '2009' on us here in FL (nothing to really chase, but still ruin the weekend)?

The "date scenario" analogy I hinted on came to fruition. Emily is suddenly gone. Two words: C*ck Tease.

TS Emily still out there, most likely now appearing to track east of the US. Remember, take a hurricane track forecast 96+ hours out as a "date with a beautiful woman for NEXT MONTH" ... Do you think it will happen? Exactly, didn't think so - LOTS can (and will) change. Remember the "cone of ERROR" is called so for a reason.
