Dust devils are small vortices that develop in hot (and usually dry) environments where a strong vertical temperature gradient exists in a shallow heated layer above the ground. In this video, an intense dust devil is caught in Lake Elsinore, California on July 18, 2021. These are normally not dangerous (except to aircraft and skydivers when landing), but can do minor damage in rare cases. In this video, I actually drive into the vortex at close range in a small industrial area.
