TRANSONIC SHOCK-WAVE ON TOP OF BOEING 737 WING

(Click HERE If No Video Displayed Above)

This is a video clip of a shock-wave that develops atop a super-critical airfoil (on a Boeing 737-800 in mid-flight from Miami to Denver in February 2022). The sunlight overhead is refracted by the normal shock-wave atop the wing in what is known as the Schlieren effect. The plane itself is not exceeding the speed of sound, however, as air relative to the plane at altitude (40,000 feet at Mach 0.76) moves over the upper part of the wing, a small portion of that air becomes supersonic.

The video requires at least a DSL connection and the latest FLASH Media Plugin for best results. This video is hosted to and linked to the YOUTUBE site (you can visit them at www.youtube.com). Click on the "play" icon in the video above if it does not start automatically.
