Very emotional day for me ... Trying to settle family differences (hard with my dad) and it's very hard with my mom's absence. Also not forgetting 3 heroes who lost their lives chasing last year today (5/31). I'll be back in the alley later this coming week to chase as well.

Headed to south FL ... Taking break from 2 day drive to slight risks. Returning monday early to Chicago maybe to see some storms in IA / IL after I get back. I'm sure there will be good tornadoes this weekend since the Italian jinxola is far from the alley :)

At age 5 I was abused by my baby sitter and mentally hurt by her. Yes I'll be open about this. The damage this did lasted my entire life, affecting relationships, jobs, amongst picking my way through severe depression and anger - for many years. If I saw this man DOING something like that ... I would have KILLED him and I'd be the one in jail saying worth it :(

I'm sure your at least happy to return to special family members!!! It was nice seeing you out there too. I opted to also NOT chase sat / sun this weekend either as a tough call. Just very far out there and I HAVE TO work Monday. June is otherwise flexible for me. Looks like my biggest "effup" this year was April 27 when I left W MO / E KS and missed tornadoes 20 miles from my original target as I got suckered into arkansas. That mistake will haunt me until I see a good tornado - In other words - For a LONG time.

Once again ... 2009 rears it's ugly El Nino head. Torn away from storm chasing this weekend due to me having to be back at my job monday to fill in for some folks who are out, and of course driving to Montana and back by then is unrealistic in a sense ... I opted to get a trip back to family in Florida instead this weekend. Yes there will be tornadoes and I'll miss them ... but what could I do. After next week I'm free most of June anyway if I need to. Good luck to all who head out and remember Tim and his group - It's been a year already.

I have to be at my office here for few days Monday June 2 so I cannot go. I'm free rest of june after that but not excited about this year. Opted to be in FL for weekend with family. Goid luck to you folks.

Very tough decisions beginning now. I am supposed to be in florida this weekend but now models are showing storm activity out west those days. Should I bump the trip to next weekend and chase? Or just grin and miss tornadoes while on the end of the nation's prick?

Still here in Chicago this week and working - Happy I did not chase far SW Texas. Looks like severe weather way up in Canada thus week. Still waiting to see what June holds for us. Very far cry from a year ago when today (5/28) I was chasing one of the finest tornadoes in my life near Bennington, KS. Most likely in FL this weekend if no activity worth chasing. Let's see...

I was out from Chicago may 18 and was supposed to be out to june 2 ... but cut my return short to may 23 ... glad I saw what I at least saw! The activity in far SW TX was declined cuz I knew tornadoes were very unlikely there due to a weakening upper low sagging into Mexico. I CAN chase early to mid June if needed, but I'm all dressed up (chicagoeans look at hail guards like I'm nuts) and no where to go. But that's where Murphys law and flexibility have to be mixed. Actually Friday I snatched up a ticket to visit folks in Florida for next weekend!

Storm chasing has been put on hold and back to work this week after Memorial day weekend. Pattern is marginal (today 5/24 being the last decent day chasing near El Paso Texas as upper low weakens). After that, it's a week+ long ridge and quiet pattern. Let's see if I can head back out come June.

With much deliberation and a highly flexible schedule, I see the marginal setups down in the arroyos and SW USA was not worth it for me to try and chase those couple of days ... So I am currently packing up and headed back to Chicago to work this week. The 500 MB forecasts ... NO I won't say anything. Plan on visiting lots of national parks after Sunday and I am sure many folks will be cutting their trips short. It's been a fun past week at least.

Done chasing for today ... Saw the tornadoes around Denver International Airport and points eastward but rain wrap and contrast was bad. At least I have a non-zero tornado count. Pretty much ONE good chance at tornadoes today (May 21) in NE Colorado. After that, the dreaded pattern of cutoff low jailed to the SW USA and building "R" in the plains begins. Possibly Friday / Saturday I will head back to Chicago, cutting my trip to June 1 short (heading out if necessary later). Good luck to all who chase today and possibly tomorrow (Thursday)! Let's step back in time ... To 1988 to 1989 (over 25 years ago) ... And take a look at what electronics we had back then. Also look at the prices - Wow! Remember back then $200 was like $400 now (in today's USD)!

Posted: May 16, 2014, 2:34 PM

Chris Collura commented on Dave Lewison's post.

Hey Patrick Kerrin ... that's really crappy for you. Jack Thunderhead Corso, I believe 1988 was the worst ever. I fortunately was not actively chasing then. In 2006 it was the may from hell ... but Sept 16 2006 made up for all of it in SD!

Planning on heading out to tornado alley by early next week. I am liking the trough coming off the Pacific and the (thankfully non-death) ridge breaking down by then. My chase window is until early june ... just need the activity! My vehicle now has all the windows hail guarded as well as the mirrors. Gonna need that for Colorado up slope!

Not really so marginal. I'm headed out starting this Sunday until at least June 5 or so. It's easier when you are in chicago instead of the tip of S Florida. Also ... last weekends setup wasn't even forecasted until a day or so!

As you all probably know ... I'm in FL this weekend taking care of stuff / family. I WAS in Iowa Thursday, took half day off work ... Nothing really happened. I see yesterday (Sat) there were tornadoes and today (Sun) theres a moderate risk in Iowa CLOSER than the areas I pounded mileage in on Thursday ... Don't worry - I'm not there (my presence jinxs these things) ... You folks out there for a weekend chase should catch a LOT of tornadoes. Chasing can really get piss-offy! Have fun who goes out today ... Next week is the 'ridge' ;(

I've seen 62 thousand feet on June 7 2007 in Wisconsin (produced 5.5" hail)! Even more interesting was the 65 dbz reflectivity was to 57 thousand on that storm! Yes it gets up there! The highest I've seen was 67 thousand in FL and 72 thousand. Imagine the rock hard storm top with a midnight blue dark sky and curved earth view?

Heading out west from Chicago no later than 10 AM wrapping up stuff in the office. Should be in the IA / MN target area by about 2 to 3 pm. Then an all night er driving back to Chicago and fly to Florida Friday evening. That moderate risk today is too seductive to ignore!

Katt Alvarez ... don't say that. Hopefully just a few days. Thank god I'm not locked into a committed vacation. I can WORK through a, ridge if I needed to. Or even chase a few days and come back to Chicago after, then head back out with more activity. It's unlikely I'll have the entire 3 week time block busy with continuous chasing.

Looks like some ridgeing will keep the central USA quiet until late next week / next weekend. So departure may be pushed after the 15th for the plains chase trip. Meanwhile it's looking very interesting several hours drive away from me tomorrow May 8 in IA / MN. Let's see. NE Colorado would have been nice today as well. This weekend I'll be in Florida.
