I wanna hit one of these things with a baseball bat! I fixed the flat with a plug in Guthrie but simply could not find an air hose - had 3 quarters, not 4. Destroyed the tire simply driving all over town looking for air ... Now a new tire. The air we breathe and some idiots charge for it :(

Always sad seeing a fellow co-worker being let go (or fired). Seems like every little thing ends something nice - such as your income. Glad it wasn't me ... Just helped clean his desk and pack up his "box". learned to always have a financial "cushion" just in case with 9/11 being the eye opener. Remember a job is a privilege. Yes ... a privilege!

Thus is when car rental blows donkey ass ... Why? When I rent a car I swipe me credit card and in 5 minutes I'm in the car and on my way ... BUT this fucker in front of me took 55 minutes to do the same thing I would do in 5 minutes. Also there are SIX positions and only ONE open. What would happen if there were 15 people in front of me? Exactly! How about some kiosks? So people like me who know HOW to rent a car could be at my office now...

Snow sun shower? With a surface temperature of 15-20 deg F or so, and -25 F at 10,000 feet up ... You get cold convective showers (small cumulonimbus) with brief heavy snow squalls interrupted by sunshine and strong winds.

UNLESS I do everything right! But skydiving is a fun sport, and we try not to think of that, and we trust the professionals who pack our parachutes!

Much better news on the cover of this mornings newspaper! Opening up a country almost forbidden to most travelers in the USA. Bring on some hurricane chasing? In a yank tank (classic car) maybe? Looks like the place will need some serious upgrades and, of course, a fresh coat of paint first!

Once again ... Some "rats" in my apartment stole stuff here in Florida. This time much more subtle ... some shaving supplies and toiletries (placed in THIS box) went missing after the bathroom was remodeled when I was in Chicago. To ALL of those who STEAL THINGS ... Lilapsophilia ... It's a real word meaning you like storms (tornadoes and hurricanes in particular). The opposite is Lilapsophobia (fear of such).Astraphilia means you like thunder and lightning (an astraphile). If you are scared of thunder, then that's astraphobia. So I guess if someone calls me a "lilapsophile" I should take that as a compliment.

In addition to a fiber diet ... Metamucil works wonders. Just $10 at Walmart it lasts a month and pays for itself in toilet paper saved.Ever had one of those craps where you wipe yer butt 100 times and there's still chit on the paper? You know, where a big log is "pinched" 3/4 of the way through (as Chris Rock put it)! With a daily regimen of one spoonful of Metamucil, you'll get a clean 'break' every morning! Gone are the days of wiping and wiping and saying "aww chit" after you waste an entire roll of toilet paper! And you'll be healthier and feel like a new man (or woman) after a good clean dump!

Skyvan jump aircraft being worked on after a day of skydiving (Jan 25) as a problem with the fuel / throttle control developed.Look closely as the guy is all checking out to find the issue with a lit cigarette in his mouth! Luckily this uses Jet-A which is not explosive like avGas.

Here's my shot of a legendary blizzard. But I'm sorry to say this is NOT the one on Jan 27, 2015.This was taken in February (around the 7th) of 1978 on Long Island in New York. Thus storm dropped 3 feet of snow (over 30 inches) and had sustained winds of 86 MPH, with gusts to 111 MPH. Thundersnow was present with rates at 4 inches per hour. The picture is my dad trying to uncover his buried car (a Cadillac) with 5 to 6 foot snow drifts. Despite no school for a week as a kid, this was taken less hyped than 3" of snow in Atlanta would cause now.
Posted: Jan 27, 2015, 2:26 PM
Blizzard conditions this morning in portions of the Chicago area. About a foot of snow before it's all done later today. I guess we'll beat NYC's totals from the last storm.

Icy cold morning here NW of Chicago. About 7 deg F in the wake of the major winter storm with cold clear Canadian air and NW winds in place. It was tough digging out this morning. Here at work, no school for the kids!

Seems like a "heat wave" today in Chicago at it was near 50 degrees. Roads all over are jammed with people going out on Saturday night. I don't blame them as its a nice night here. Then after church I was boxed in by some fire trucks with a supposed hi rise fire in downtown!

Jeez ... My expertise in IT pays off last night!Download a version of odin (for flashing ROM on Samsung Android devices) and run the installer for version 3.10.x on my laptop. The installer hangs saying "please wait while we install your program" and right away (knowing something was not right), I killed it with task manager.Sure enough, these weird executables were running in "processes" with names like "1zamg1.exe", "vuupc.com", "cosd64.exe", and such. I killed those and they kept "re spawning" (kill them and they restart by themselves).I booted into save mode (after writing down these names) and deleted them via a file search.Booted again into normal mode (ofcourse with wifi OFF), and scheduled a boot time scan, rebooted again (with wifi OFF), and the drive was clean. Then removed all the garbage / rogue security programs in my "installed" (that I KNOW I didnt download) programs (things like "stormwatch", "coupon caddy", etc), plus deleting these physically in the "windows" and "program files" dirs (using shift delete), and scanned again. My laptop was saved (simply from catching this on time). Oh, and I reported this website posing as an official Samsung Odin support page with links to MS and Google as malware.I hope whoever writes this crap - Such as THIS GUY (hacker George Hotz) - Gets caught and goes to a federal prison, drops the soap, and his ass is "torn apart")!

OK ... Can anyone explain to me why "orphan" socks appear after a load of laundry?Did a load last night and CAREFULLY made sure what went into the washer ALL came out, transferring them to the dryer. Making sure NOTHING was dropped on the floor, nothing left clinging inside the washer or dryer.Still, low and behold ... ONE sock and the other no where to be found! Check the floor, check the machines, even spent an hour going through every pocket and sleeve / pant (to rule out the possibility of the other sock wedged in there) ... Nothing. I really do think the other sock either disintegrates, slips through a pipe or vent, or vanishes through a self-created rift in the space time continuum - Never to be seen again!Any thoughts?

Samsung has been flawless until just recently. Now these messages are commonplace. I'm going to speak to the folks at Samsung at best buy this weekend in Florida (or else it's back to apple, and my customer appreciation for them will also "have stopped").First of all ... AT&T offered a 4.4.4 OTA (over the air) KitKat update to their OS that is 481 MB to download. Then after about an hour, the phone reboots and "tries" to install the update ... gets to 25% and says "update failed". You can try again in 24 hours (if you want to see the 25% failure again). Why won't AT&T stay the fuck out of the way ... and let Samsung handle it like they should! Eversince this update failed my phone has been whacky (icons vanish, SD card not found, crashing apps), oh my!And yeah, yeah, yeah ... Samsung haters out there have already said "told you so" ... one of them threw his phone and broke it - twice - because of this nonsense.

Heading to Florida this weekend. Lots of work to do down there, plus my dad's BDay (if he wants to even see me this time, if not, I'll leave the "aftercard" in his doorway). If I'm in a bad mood down there just ignore those posts. Just a lil "trouble in paradise". Back to Chicago March 3 to extended stay with more amenities.

I am ABSOLUTELY FED UP with fucking Android ever since the idiots at Best Buy upgraded my Galaxy S5 phone from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4. I have no idea what the hell these errors are (systemmui - WTF app is that) - YES I reset the phone (WITH battery out for several minutes) umpteen times and the same shit ...... Pandora "stopped working", then "gallery", then "text to speech engine", then I use the camera and my phone locks up and magically reboots - then the camera is fine but "touchwiz" and "travel wallpaper" stops working (these are not even in the app management screen) ...... "some other" app stopped working, a DIFFERENT app each time "stopped working", then exit (or reset phone) go back in and that SAME app works fine.I showed this IN ACTION to the IDIOTS at best buy Samsung "experience" center SECONDS after they updated the phone and they said to me "something I put on the phone" is causing the crashes. Never once did they address the problem. Then for 2 weeks it was perfectly stable. Rebooted once and no crashes nor problems - I was delighted, and cancelled the UPS to send the phone in for repairs ... And a week later it acted up again (see the image)!I will spend the extra $$$ and go back to iPhone. Fuck you, Samsung S5 / Android.BTW ... WTF is the "green squares" in these crashes too?

Crazy busy day packing tons of stuff into storage unit at my former Florida apartment. I was not alone, 15 other PODS were in my same complex. Glad the "rapid ascent" rent was not just me (obviously).
Posted: Apr 2, 2015, 7:53 PM
Absolutely painful night of SEVERE lower back pain and spasms after moving 99% of my stuff into the POD storage unit. Felt fine all day moving, went to sleep, no pain ... until 12 AM where each breath I took would trigger spasms keeping me awake - and literally on the verge of crying - until 7 am. Meanwhile ... Painkillers conveniently were sitting quietly 1300 miles away in Chicago. Screw moving...

Moving heavy stuff needs one big strong Italian guy like me to do it fast. But the key to a fast move is simply to NOT clutter up your house / apartment to begin with. Clutter makes me SICK.

Moderate to heavy turbulence experienced between Florida (Fort Lauderdale) and Chicago this morning. Changed altitudes several times as it was hard to find smooth air, especially over Kentucky / Ohio / Indiana. Most of it was CAT (no, not the cute furry animal), for Clear Air Turbulence. Plane shaking despite sky being crystal clear and deep blue.

So here's where I was chasing late in the day on June 11 (after softball sized hail a day earlier 25 miles from my place when I was NOT chasing). My bad chasing luck cleared a big hole all around me - Amazing ey? I guess I saved a lot of lives and property yesyerday (think positive)!Whoever didn't get Rochelle in IL on April 9 pretty much got ALL the others.Who cleared that other "hole" in Kansas? Must be another storm chaser there related to the Collura family, or someone who shook my hand last week, or something. Lol.

Interesting view of the circulation center of tropical storm Bill off the central Texas Gulf Coast. No one on spotter network is near the center.I am not chasing this. It's not a hurticsne, just 50 to 60 MPH gusts mainly in the intense bands east (right side) of the center. Dry air intrusion is occurring on the west (left) side.

This was May 11, 2010 in Oklahoma. Picture brought tears to my eyes because I was multi tasking (as many chasers do) with a camera taking this picture and phone on speaker in the other hand ... with my wonderful mom calling to see how I was doing right at that moment.I recall her saying "after you get back from chasing this week, you're coming over Saturday, right? I'll make you you're 'favorite' ... tuna-tenner sandwiches!" ... When I was a kid I always called tuna salad that. Don't recall why.Mom's are such wonderful people and have such great memories. Almost every time I see an LP Supercell now I think of that moment ... my "favorite" ... sigh.

One of those years ... Remembering the 80's once again when most people in S Florida now don't know what a major hurricane is, with major complacency. A decade without a strike and a threat very unlikely this Atlantic season would do that.Meanwhile - Like the mullets of the 80's - The Pacific rages on with "fish" storm after storm. This is Dolores, with 135 MPH winds, churning in the E Pacific well west of Mexico. But look at the tiny island there (uninhabited Isla Socorro) ... Anyone wanna be on that island now?

Posted: Aug 2, 2015, 7:57 PM
Western Pacific is literally a "world away difference" between the West Pacific and Atlantic basins - Tropically that is. The Atlantic remains a joke and will do so for much of the season (strong positive ENSO / El Niño). The Pacific is where the tropical "violence" will be this year...
Posted: Aug 4, 2015, 6:45 AM
Watching Typhoon Soudelor approaching the E coast of Taiwan with winds from 110 to 120 MPH. Some chasers are out there in Hualien City in the storms path. In the graphic (annotated radar image) we can clearly see a powerful -- and very LARGE outer eyewall, surrounding a smaller eyewall struggling inside. This could very well be an aversion to a far stronger storm, and such internal tropical cyclone dynamics are poorly understood (eyewall replacement especially).
Posted: Aug 7, 2015, 9:32 AM
Another view of typhoon Soudelor approaching Taiwan. It appears air flowing down from the higher terrain is descending and drying (compression) from the mountains. I've seen this in Rita in 2005 from the mountains in Hispaniola when the storm was near Key West. Interesting is the dry "punch" creating a front-like feature south of the eyewall segment SE of the eye (open SW). @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and his group are entering that region in Hualien City. Taiwan is indeed an island ... but large enough (like Hispaniola) to disrupt an approaching storm.
Posted: Aug 7, 2015, 11:51 AM
Still even more bizarre ... Typhoon Soudelor looks like it has made landfall just north or near Hualien City. Look at how the inner eye completely vanished and deep convection replaced it (basically a thunderstorm spinning around like the hub of a wheel). The right side, including Su'ao is getting the maximum onshore flow. Mudslides and flash floods now are the biggest threats (highway 9 near river in Hualien City especially).

Hurricane Danny is in the tropical Atlantic and moving WNW with 105 MPH winds as of 11 AM EDT (Aug 21). This is a small storm with a "pinhole" eye making it very susceptible to intensity changes. This Saturday evening I head to FL for couple days for dental follow up on Monday early ... Then back to Chicago --Or maybe "stop over" in San Juan BEFORE going back to Chicago?Hummm ... Not sure given the intensity forecast, with dry air and shear forecasted to affect the storm by Sunday early, bringing it near Puerto Rico as a weakening tropical storm by Tuesday early. Might not be worth it but who knows. This might be one of the only interesting Atlantic storms this year...

Looking at the IR channel of Erika yiu would think she's well organized. Even looping it you see rotation in the high altitude cloud tops! But don't be fooled. Looking at the visible satellite channel to the right, we see the typical "its not 2004-05" pattern with an exposed low level center creeping out from under the high cloud tops (especially if you loop it).The line and "x's" connect the upper rotation gyres of the high level clouds. The low level center (LLC) has been de-coupled as NW winds aloft blow off the convection to the SE, including the upper "gyre".Three things can happen. The center can reform under the high cloud canopy (unlikely), or convection can pulsatingly reform around the LLC and the process can repeat maintaining a weak storm until the shear weakens, or three, the shear strengthens and Erika degenerates entirely.A TUTT low (tropical upper tropospheric trough) over Cuba is producing the strong NW flow aloft over Erika.
Posted: Aug 26, 2015, 11:16 AM
Move over, Erika and go back in time 10 years ago (Aug 29) when the USA used to get hit with major hurricanes......This is the arrival of hurricane forced winds during the morning of August 29, 2005 between Biloxi / Gulfport, MS. The winds here are MINIMAL hurricane forced (70 - 80 MPH), far less than the soon to arrive eyewall and tidal surge, allowing one to stand in the winds as long as there is no "upwind" debris. The helmet and goggles are a MUST. Note the effects on my body!

Microsoft never cold calls anyone like that. They are trying to lure you into gaining remote access to your computer to plant maleware or viruses on it. Or even worse, simply get your SS and / or CC number to buy software or charge you to remove the planted maleware they infected you with! This is a KNOWN scam and already a link for it on Microsoft's site under "www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx". Some interesting stuff going on here with hurricane Joaquin. The decreasing northerly shear as well as an explosive growth of "hot towers" (thunderstorms reaching over 60,000 feet, casting shadows on the top of the CDO) near the storm center. Good radial outflow in most quadrants as well.

With such a beautiful presentation and CONTINUED movement to the SW ... Whoever went to the central Bahamas to chase this made a lucky roll of the dice. On the other hand ... I'm sitting tight here in Chicago until I see a definite strike possibility on the Carolinas late weekend to next week (???). A new England chase will probably not bag a hurricane. The thing now is how sharp and WHEN will that N turn be?

The lack of a fall "mini" storm chasing season is quite understandable when you see this annotated H5 (500 mb flow) map. Be HAPPY we did not see this in May and June! A storm chasers nightmare. The good thing is that this blocking pattern should keep the central USA and parts of the Midwest warm and choke off any hurricane threats in the east Pacific and N Atlantic US coasts for at least a week.

OK ... With the Atlantic void of any threats ... My turn to post a lame "anniversary" type story - Actually not all that "lame"!Hurricane Wilma was raging on a path from the W Caribbean through Mexico and into Florida exactly a decade ago (10 years). Ironically this was the last time the United States had a landfall of a major hurricane - Yes TEN YEARS (sorry, global warming advicates)! With an intensity of almost 190 MPH (try to wrap your mind around that - winds sustained at over 3 miles a minute, with gusts probably over 250 MPH ... An EF5 tornado is 200 MPH and up)! With an eye 2.5 miles wide and central pressure of 882 mb ... basically sea level pressure defecit of about 1.9 PSI (12.7 instead of 14.7) ... about the same as being 4000 feet above sea level. What a sight to behold. Then the storm goes through eyewall replacement cycles, and winds up with a giant eye 40 miles across, hitting the Yucatan, then South Florida at 125 MPH causing 87 fatalities and almost 30 billion dollars in damages. Meanwhile, tropical storm Alpha, the first storm to use the Greek alphabet, is in the Bahamas. Here is the visible satellite image of Patricia off Mexico just after sunrise on Oct 23, 2015.This is the strongest tropical cyclone ever observed in the western hemisphere. Sustained winds at this time are 200 mph, with a central pressure of 882 mb ... and it's still intensifying.Basically this is a strong EF5 tornado ... same destruction possible (like Joplin, MO in May 2011) - But on a larger scale. Gusts can be 250 (or even 300) MPH in a storm like this! It's difficult to wrap your mind around this.Believe it or not, two chasers, @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and his chase partner Erik are trying to find a substantial structure to document the core of this thing coming in (near the red "X" in the picture). There's not many major towns in that part of Mexico, along a small 2 lane coastal road (highway 200). The storm will come in sunset or a bit after at the landfall point as a record breaking category 5 hurricane.I was ready to head out yesterday to chase this. I couldn't get the time off due to work (supervisor and coworker out). Maybe this is a good thing because if you don't carry a bomb shelter around with you - how can you even chase something like this?May God be with Josh and Erik over there. Quite frankly, these two are in grave danger and to be honest, if I was them I think I would stand down from this chase. It's not worth getting hurt. I'm concerned for their safety.
Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 7:13 AM
Hurricane Patricia just took a big wobble to the NE! If this continues, Manzanillo will get the core of this storm. Very bad.Hopefully that's where @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and Erik will be able to find something to hide under!
Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 10:01 AM
The terrifying jog to the NE was nothing more than a trochoidal loop (jog) so it appears Manzanillo, fortunately, won't get the small and devastating core of hurricane Patricia. The motion is more north now but may wobble again. It can come in anywhere from La Manzanilla and NW of there, but I doubt as far as Puerto Vallarta. The storm eye is also shrinking again, but a slight hint of shear is impinging on the west margins of the storm - but still far from affecting the storms core, since it's moving NNE to begin with. It's a matter of watching now ... landfall is only several hours away. I still hope @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and Erik there score somehow on this 100 year storm ... and not get hurt.
Posted: Oct 23, 2015, 12:28 PM
Here is the landfall area of hurricane Patricia narrowed down. The worst case scenario will be not only being on the right side of the eye in the inner eyewall, but on the beach end of a cove or bay where water can funnel into. La Manzanilla is like this and if they get the core winds it will be catastrophic. Fortunately there isn't much there and it's been evacuated. I hope @[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman] and his group will be OK.

Skydive today (probably on last real perfect day of fall). Head down through 10,000 feet (from just over 13,500) netted a true airspeed of 255 MPH (measured on Altitrak)! Maybe the gusts in hurricane Patricia at maximum intensity?

Taking a "knee" I guess. Not sure WTF happened as I don't remember banging my knee nor doing anything "rigorous" (since Sunday morning). Just like if someone whacked my knee cap with a hammer (but the pain is continuous, and almost un bearable). Woke up last night (Tue) and the pain kept me awake.Got tons of ice on it, taking Motrin, barely any swelling though. Not sure what the heck thus is (?).

Next week if it verifies... This is way out, so take this as a JOKE (it was originally an ad posted by Kohls saying 20% off but I couldn't resist taking the ad and altering it)!I could post comments on this post, but the little camera to the left wasn't there (screw FB and its bugs)! The moisture and instability will be lacking big time anyway.

Thats my funny face for you all!Absolutely excruciating pain in my left knee. Spent a few hours around midnight in the FTL ER and was put on strong pain killers and antibiotics. I had a flare-up of first time bursitis.Man this is painful stuff ... on par with being whacked on the knee cap with a hammer (without the pain afterwards going away).I don't care if the ER Co payment is $20 or $20,000. Relief from this is worth any price now!I hope everyone had a good Halloween. What a drama scene watching people all busted up and drunk walking (or being carried) in here.
Posted: Oct 31, 2015, 9:44 PM
The excruciating pain I have been having non stop Saturday (like someone striking my knee with a hammer) is a bit better (on antibiotics and strong pain killers) after spending Halloween night in the ER (ofcourse it happens when I cannot see my doctor there in S Florida). I was even given crutches.I was finally able to put two and two together and remember WTF I did (pulled leg, banged it, etc) ... I remember last week doing some exercise in the hotel and I was on my knees and put my knee down on a sharp object (screw) in the carpet. I bled a little, cussed a bit (NYC in me), and shrugged it off. What happened was that bacteria infected my bursa (fluid filled sac below my knee cap) through that cut and flared last night (sat). This is extremely painful and I never EVER ever wanna get this again.

Walking by the TV at the lobby in my extended stay hotel here in the Chicago suburbs and I hear the words "supercell" and "tornado" and there I am on TV as they are showing "caught on camera". One of the guys in the lobby is like "hey, that's you? Awesome!" ... I took this quick shot of the TV!

This is what makes meteorology such an awesome topic. Check out the full on near blizzard conditions in the NW Chicago suburbs with a foot of snow. Yet, meanwhile (in the inset), and a mere 15 miles due east, NO SNOW and strong winds whipping up waves on Lake Michigan north of Chicago! This goes to show how localized and narrow a snow swath can be!

This was a hospital bill for an ER visit for a severely inflamed knee. They did NOTHING ... But to get pain killers and antibiotics, you gotta see a doctor. The minute clinic at Walgreens could have done all this for $40. But when does this happen? Yup on a holiday and Saturday night when nothing else is open.F-ck you, Murphey. This was a visit just for a prescription - For medicines costing no more than $30. Also note how much my super expensive insurance paid :)

Way ... way - WAY too early in the day for this BS! I empathize with anyone seeing all this RED. Glad it ain't me!NO, this is 2:15 PM, not 6 PM (11/25). 3 people in my office left for airport 3 hours before flight and all three MISSED them. This is why I chose to stay put and NOT travel to Florida until Saturday (my family there was smart and did the same thing). For anyone traveling be patient, expect a hellish commute, and most importantly stay SAFE and have a good Thanksgiving holiday.

Much better today as knee seems to have been just sore from working over the weekend on some cabling and NOT because of the feared bursitis.I think spending $834 THEN $355 back in the ER (it happened on a weekend at night when my primary care as well as all the non ER clinics were closed) in October just to get $20 in meds was enough. I kept them just in case, hehehe! And yes my $825 a quarter (and rising) health insurance is more active than the "skin folds on the Michelin man" ... But did they pay a penny? No.So yes ... The medicines were $20. The "PERMISSION" to be allowed to get them was $1189 :)Picture: I'm jealous. Canada, you lucky bastards! Lol...

Tornado "TWIN" Thursday. This was Quinter, KS on 5/23 in 2008!This was a satellite tornado rotating around the wedge to the far left.

Here's to my "first tornado" Friday ... A long time ago from the very first entry in any of my chase logs at age 16.An F0 to F1 tornado touches down in Pompano Beach, Florida on January 5, 1987. This is my first tornado picture showing the funnel on the rear side of an HP supercell storm. Note the clear slot in the upper-left side of this picture associated with the RFD. This tornado blew down a light pole and uprooted some trees.

Here's a good one for stovepipe Saturday. This was on September 16, 2006. The tornado just crossed I-90 and was about 1/2 a mile to our north. This was near Canistota, SD west of Sioux Falls. I was with @[724566193:2048:Verne Carlson] and his sons.

Here's my entry for meso-Monday! May 29, 2008 near Tipton / Beloit, Kansas. This is a frame grab from HD video. It's NOT HDR. What you see here is what you saw there (with less justice)! Yes there even a multivortex tornado under this monster. This went on to produce an EF-3 wedge near Jewell, Kansas with a sympathetic anticyclonic thin tornado on the south side if the massive RFD, which directly affected the TWISTEX group I was chasing with!

Posted: Dec 28, 2015, 6:05 PM
Where's David and his slingshot when you need him? Winter storm "Goliath" killed most travel out of Chicago (Midway in this picture) starting 12/28 with even the hard-to-find rebooked flights severely delayed or cancelled! What an EFFing mess!

It's winter and it's COLD. I normally struggle with red and crusty areas with dry and flaking skin in such weather, and nothing (expensive creams) seemed to work. But this stuff, pure coconut oil, put on my skin once in the morning (after over a year of skin creams not working) cleared it in 3 days. Another remedy the big companies don't want you to know about!

The first named storm of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season?Yes! Forming on Jan 12 and churning in the east Atlantic basin as of Jan 14 making this one if the earliest systems (since Epsilon in a similar area from December 2005 to Jan 2006)!Meanwhile, the central Pacific basin also complimented with the formation of Pali well south of Hawaii. Weather can occur in the STRANGEST places and times and certainly does NOT follow rules!

Our attitude (positive or negative) is a powerful thing that can make or break our lives and anything in it. After my last trip and comments from best friend of mine here ... I realized how lucky I am to have what I got. The grass may "appear" greener on the other side but may not be that way when you get there!Like aviation ... Attitude (position / orientation of an aircraft, or skydiver) is a prominent driving force in the outcome of the flight. Look at what happens to my free fall VELOCITY (measured) just from a subtle change in my attitude!Think of that same affect with you're attitude around Co workers, friends, and family ... a little thing that can make a big difference.

Humm... why am I not surprised?
Posted: Feb 2, 2016, 2:38 PM
This is a perfect example of the importance of doppler radar! To the left (reflectivity), a tornadic supercell appears as just a blob of heavy rain moving from east central Mississippi into Alabama (SW of Tuscaloosa). But when you look at the same cell to the right (velocity), there's no mistake seeing the (gate to gate) velocity signature of a strong tornado! The red dots are storm chasers.
Posted: Feb 2, 2016, 2:48 PM
It appears Carrollton, Alabama had the debris signature pass right over them. I hope the storm has cycled down. More mesocyclones have also formed to the SW in a training line of supercells with the most violent lead storm heading just west of Tuscaloosa after passing over Carrollton. Take cover now!
Posted: Feb 2, 2016, 3:07 PM
Just in case you're wondering ... I am not chasing this as its well to my south. Reform, AL appears next to be potentially hit... take cover now!Anyway ... keep a close eye out if you are living (or chasing) near west central Alabama!Note the "training" mesocyclones in a SW to NE oriented line!

Again ... Tornadoes in my home town area in south FL (don't worry - hang on I'm coming - I'll be there this Saturday night to make it all go away) and in the deep south yesterday.Tornado season is in these areas in February, especially with strong El Niño energizing the subtropical jet stream.Late March to late June the Midwest and central USA should see tornadoes. In the picture, the April 9 Rochelle tornado in IL (2015) and ground scar (inset) viewed from an aircraft a couple days later.Always have a tornado plan!

Not chasing this one but this was pretty much my virtual target the past 3 days (not wanting anything to do with the deciduous jungles of the main E OK / Western AR targets). For those who went to SW Iowa and NW Missouri for storm chasing today (Wed 3/23) ... You chose wisely :)
Posted: Mar 23, 2016, 11:47 AM
So for those who chased yesterday (3/23), it appears it was indeed an over hyped winter chase. Meh.I highlighted Iowa in there because that's the state where something like this usually happens :(

The pain sure doesn't match the "visuals". Trimmed my nails (without professional Vietnamese help) last week (after I quit biting them after the New Year) and a little split formed in one of them.I removed the split and it was OK a few days then it became an ingrown nail and infected. You don't know it's there UNTIL you brush you're finger against something or bump it (like grabbing keys or such) ... THEN it's EXCRUCIATING pain! This morning I gently bumped my hand while brushing my teeth and got to see all the "stars" in one shot ... I think I even saw Jupiter and all its natural satellites too :-(

Came across this graphic from the US Air Force (I think). It's illustrated from the 60s space race era showing what would happen if you bailed out of high speed (such as an X15 or such) at extremely high altitude and hypersonic speed (~7,500 MPH). Basically from Boston to New York City in 3 minutes during the first "phase" of youre "skydive" due to the "throw" of the aircraft. What is not considered is that the heating would probably bake you long before you reach 150,000 feet :/

Back in Chicago after great storm chase trip. 4 tornadoes THEN I see a few FEET of snow in Denver! Low and behold it's 80 degrees in Chicago. Spring weather rocks! Also grateful I'm not flying out of Chicago with a TSA line snaking out into the street!

Looks like I'll be seriously eyeing up what may be a potentially major severe weather outbreak during the early to mid week starting Tuesday, April 26. For storm chasers this may be a good thing (if this verifies, the chase areas I'll be working on are outlined in the diagram). On the other hand, if a severe weather outbreak does occur, there is the potential for loss of life and property. Let's hope that IF we get tornadoes, cities / towns are missed by them. Right now the jet stream "energy" for this system is currently crossing the central Pacific ocean at this time ... doing nothing more than providing a strong tail wind for Asia / USA eastbound flights!

One fine day ... maybe a year (or more) ago ... These lanes were closed. Totally unsolicited and without notice.Notice no work being done, just narrow "bottle neck" jamming traffic for two miles in each direction! Chicago's great, but when it comes to construction management, they suck :/

High over the Chicago suburbs passes two planes, one possibly a 777 ... Nice contrails!X marks the spot ... I love the smell of Chem-trails in the afternoon!

Storm chasers on a supercell storm surely can be like flies on, well, you know!
Posted: Apr 24, 2016, 4:43 PM
Starting the long journey out to Kansas late this afternoon and evening. Obviously Tuesday (4/26) should be an interesting day. SPC is precluding a high risk at this time because the tornadic supercells will be "scattered", good for chasing (since storms won't fire everywhere and the storms you are on not producing).Let's hope this won't be a terrible Tuesday event. Stay safe for those chasing this setup. Anyone not chasing needs to have a tornado / disaster plan in place!

Straight out of bed and to the laptop to forecast in Kansas at hotel now. You just can wake up instantly when there's a risk of severe weather!

In this image ... Both the visible satellite and radar image (base reflectivity) is shown for the violent tornadic supercell that occurred north of Sulphur, Oklahoma during the afternoon of May 9.The impressive radar presentation (right image) of this storm shows an extremely powerful mesocyclone (velocity is the upper-right inset, and correlation-coefficient in the lower-right inset - Prominently showing the grey-blue "debris" ball) as this storm was producing a potentially violent wedge tornado. The satellite image to the left shows the supercells in Oklahoma firing along the dryline (annotated), including the one in the radar images (circled). Impressive to say the least!

Not sure why and where this comes from ... But in a humorous sense I'll post it...Basically it's literally HALF the cost of an airfare from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale (SW Airlines) to fly half way around the world from Los Angeles to Tokyo (American Airlines)...Can anyone explain that?

Long trip - AND week chasing ahead!Left Chicago late this morning and working my way SW for the first chase target areas. Picture : Passing Saint Louis :)

It's 1:30 AM at my hotel here in Wichita and the adrenaline is only starting to wear off now. So I'll sleep soon. What a day (5/24) to remember! Started with an awesome chaser convergence more fun than ChaserCon in many ways AND the trip north into Mineola and Dodge City, Kansas for tornado INSANITY. Witnessing this cyclic supercell go from a CU field through its many tornadoes, all the way to the end if it's life cycle puts this near the number one chase slot in all my chasing career. Congrats to everyone's great work out there!

Transformation of the "Red Wagon" Ford Escape from a chase vehicle back to an SUV is complete. Over 10,000 miles logged this year and at least 20 tornadoes! Outside of dings, one would never imagine the hail grills were on there just a few hours ago. Most likely this vehicle is done chasing.

Summer is here as well as a potential tornado then derecho type event for Wednesday. Well see...
Posted: Jun 20, 2016, 9:11 AM
Northern Illinois looks to be potentially a violent setup for Wednesday (June 22). It is still unclear what will be the severe weather details, which can be anything from tornadoes to damaging winds and hail. SPC is putting a moderate risk on day 2 with a 45 percent (hatched for significant) chance of severe weather 25 miles of a point.
Posted: Jun 21, 2016, 6:48 AM
Hail grills are back on the vehicle using a more temporary mounting. Might need them tomorrow in Illinois!

This morning (really early) ... I figured I could do the Pitts Special jump and be into work late morning. Boy was that a flop. They had at least 9 people waiting there since 7 AM and they're STILL waiting for the first load (Heather was the first in line for the manifest, Casey was number 2, I would have been 9).After hearing "It's delayed a bit and will be here within the hour..." (heard this 3 or 4 times since 8 AM) I just left and headed to work at 10:30 AM. The last "BS claim" was the plane will come at 12:45 PM. At work you can check online and it's still waiting at 2 pm, meaning these dumb morons (at West TN skydiving providing the Pitts) still couldn't get the plane there to Skydive CSC.Broken promises and failed dates... The "delayed a bit" was a nice touch guys.

Just incredible. The iCyclone group (@[1274967078:2048:Josh Morgerman]) is on this storm and it's going to be quite interesting to see his updates from near Taitung City.

I have just about had it with the way people have gotten here lately in this country. Un F'cking believable. Rude, insensitive, treat our friends, co workers, and family like shit. Shootings (don't go there). Come on guys... grow up !!!I'm worried because I'm seeing these changes happening in a very short period of time (2 to 3 years at most). Everyone's looking at looks, age, and money when dating. I seem to be the only one left who says "please" and "thank you". I say good morning at work in the morning and hear nothing back. You gotta worry about our safety. Ugly.I try to wake up every morning so happy I'm here another day, all happy and excited. Then I see the news on the TV in the lobby. Say "Good morning, Frank" ... And hear ......... (nothing). Good mood stops there.I noticed some cities had this "pattern" first. Miami seemed to be like this since the late 90s. California got like this in the past 3 to 5 years. Chicago had a welcoming and nice crowd, but that ended in 2015 or so. Places like Toronto is still ok, as well as few and far places in the USA, like Wichita or Amarillo. I've heard comments from Canadians saying the USA is headed towards a new civil war.Even personally. Here I do my job, make up missed time, always polite. Go over in details with my boss here, and he gives me a tone if he has to repeat something I already agree with him on. Says good morning only to the full time people here. Nasty. Today he mad an ass out of me in front of a bunch of people. I got so miffed with him today I had to take a walk. I was close to breaking something. Not me.Like a dark tunnel with no light at the end. What the F'ck is this country getting itself into???

The TV in the lobby in my hotel here (after hearing a loud crash and someone say "I'm sick of the USA and it's gun violence" earlier)! As for me, at least now there's no news to spoil my day in the morning?

Basically you have two types of people (suffering from a problem with their life, health, etc) that handle their limited time left in two ways...1). Drag everyone around them down to the same miserable mental state (preferably lower) as they are using guilt, anger, and just being down right rude. You'll lose whatever friends you have, die alone (and faster), and no one will miss you.2). Try to live day by day, enjoying that time with the friends and family you love. Making them love you more (and when your gone leaving good memories). Also, such good energy may actually make you live longer!I've personally (and unfortunately) seen #1 above. Doctor told him he had 5 to 10 years, but he lived only 2, and the death was slow and agonizing. I also seen #2, and after being told six months to live, she lived 4 more years with a quick and peaceful passage at the end.

Just a heads up on an app called "Personal Capital". It's a seemingly cool app showing a dashboard of your bank and investment monies all in one "glance". A friend showed it to me last month and I tried it. It seemed really handy...Until...BEWARE because this app SHARES your personal information - I know because I soon started getting sales calls and emails from people nagging me to put money in stocks. I mean sometimes a half dozen calls a day!Even scarier was that these sales calls or emails would have my balances and even bank accounts in them! Do NOT give this out - EVER!I removed the app and deleted my account for it. The calls continued for a while until I declined them and they dwindled down. Still getting spam though ... Just be CAREFUL of these things.Would you want strangers to see what you have in your bank / portfolio? ...Exactly.

Looking more like a tilted TCU tower in western Oklahoma during a moderate risk on May 22, no, this is over the south Florida coastal waters on September 22 ... High bulk shear values tilt the updraft in a similar manner, and basically kill off any hurricane potential in the state.

Well ... AND NOBODY went (sure with airfares there at LEAST $1,100) ... Bermuda is poised to get a DIRECT hit DAYTIME major hurricane (Nicole) around noon tomorrow AST!This will be the first major hurricane since Fabian in 2003. The absurdly high airfares discouraged me from going ... But maybe I should have (being the only one there and make $$$ back off footage)! The Sargasso Sea, Murphey's Law, and teenie weenie Bermuda? Oh well...
Posted: Oct 12, 2016, 2:40 PM
Go to store and the only f'cking item YOU NEED ain't there?Go to the wide expanses of the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic basin and the only f'cking island a MAJOR hurricane will hit is Bermuda? Go screw off, Murphey.
Posted: Oct 12, 2016, 6:21 PM
I think I would consider this a pretty DIRECT hit.
Posted: Oct 13, 2016, 8:38 AM
Notice that on the satellite, the eye is displaced far northeast of where the radar image is at that time. This is the start of some shear and tilting of the vertical structure of the core region of the hurricane. If you were inside the eye in Bermuda, most likely you would not see a "stadium" effect. Just lighter winds and brightening of the sky. Also note in the radar image that Bermuda is on the left side of the eye and the eyewall is open to the south and west.

Looks like the eye has passed and winds have shifted 180 degrees. Nice data log from Bermuda weather service! Also notice the warm core effect (80 deg in eye with lightest winds and 963 mb) :)

Aha haha ... That's all, folks :-)Bermuda radar and AWOS down after 93 mph gust from NW at 1:19 PM AST. Data resumed for AWOS at 1:55 but no radar.

Screw this election circus. I'm not logging onto Facebook until election day. That's a promise.Check "www.sky-chaser.com" for updates in the highly unlikely event there's storms being chased.See you all next month! Good luck. God bless...

Warning! If you get a link on FB or message with 5 free AMC movie tickets ... Just ignore it!There's a fake thing going around where you have to take a quick survey, share a hash tag on FB, and "step 2" where you have to share the movie link with 15 or more friends (in order to retrieve your free tickets).Step 2 does the 15+ shares, ofcourse, but you cannot get past that step (says "verifying" and gets stuck).I apologize about this as I accidentally tried step 2 and it looks like I made about 15 people quite upset. And "95th anniversary"? Maybe they should wait another 5 years?Don't follow this link!

Heading westbound on I 395 in Miami and the entire eastbound lanes there (as well as part of I 95) are filled with Clinton / Trump protesters.Stay AWAY from this area. YES ... That's ALL PEOPLE on the opposite side of a MAJOR interstate. No cars. Is this the USA or a 3rd world country?Rediculous.

#wedgewednesday Here's my pick ... North of Bowdle, South Dakota (at least EF4) on May 22, 2010!
Posted: Nov 16, 2016, 7:48 AM
The last official chase day for 2016 was Oct 7 in Kansas. That's it. That was our fall season. Winter is coming and folks up north will be facing a cold (but dry winter) thanks to La Niña. Spring 2017 will be pretty active come the April to June time frame. I'm up for some clear air turbulence (CAT)...
Posted: Nov 17, 2016, 10:29 AM
#wedgewednesday Wedge Wednesday ... So I'll make it a "Bennington day"!May 28, 2013 (near Bennington, KS).

Damn I miss the 4 seasons and Chicago. This is early winter in S Florida :(Rain every weekend. No outside activities, and accidents (people in S Florida never learned to drive in drizzle). 2009 !!!!

One second left ... Miami Dolphins kick winning field goal for 26-23 win over the Aruzona Cardinals!Football at its finest!

I see my mom in my dream last night. She tells me she's "going away" but takes her hand and puts it in the middle of my chest saying "I'll ALWAYS be here".Besides waking up crying uncontrollably like a baby, I know she just "visited" me from heaven in my dreams.

Did you just love the 80s? Who remembers CineMax? Art of Noise?Awesome era!
Posted: Dec 18, 2016, 2:59 PM
Jeez ... What a weather geek I am.I happen to wake up early looking at the surface obs (with 83 deg F in S Florida - sorry) and I see -5 deg F west of Chicago, IL.So I message an ex co-worker of mine (before she goes to work) there to boil a pot of water and toss it into the air outside their house and send me pics of it.Thanks for doing it! Now I'll see how the waves are at the beach :)

It's always quite scary when the IR satellite (colorizing only the high altitude clouds as colder) reports similar colors on the ground - In the absence of high clouds!
Posted: Dec 19, 2016, 8:56 AM
For anyone in South Florida: Plan on indoor activities for the most part. While it's clear and cold up north, South Florida really hasn't got a shot of cool air. Instead, the Canadian high pressure slides east instead of SE, causing these cold fronts to STALL over south FL and only cause dreary and wet weather - Taking a week or more to clear out!Looks like skydiving WON'T happen until well into the new year... 2009 / 2010 anyone?
Posted: Dec 22, 2016, 8:27 AM
And THAT'S how the Miami Dolphins LOSE a football game :(

Tornado "Triple Tuesday" ... Well almost at least!Feast your eyes on the Pilger "twins" with a possible third satellite to the far left trying to form.Note the devastated farmstead in the foreground - June 16, 2014 in Nebraska. The view is to the north of 275.

Let's put it this way ... The hail guards for my new Jeep.Wrangler are on the "drawing board". Spring 2017 is coming!
Posted: Jan 31, 2017, 6:17 PM
Hail guards coming along ... Slowly but surely.
Posted: Feb 1, 2017, 11:45 AM
Wedge Wednesday! I'm throwing in the Rochelle, Illinois EF-4 from April 9, 2015!What a beast that was (unfortunately 2 people in Fairdale were killed) and a restaurant (Grubsteakers) destroyed with part of its sign carried 80 miles away to south of Milwaukee in less than minutes!
Posted: Feb 1, 2017, 3:13 PM
Side hail guards for driver and passenger windows done and looking great. Just wrapping up front windshield hail guard that will protect the hood and Jeep window. These all will be painted matte black.
Posted: Feb 3, 2017, 2:03 PM
Anyone know what kind of insect this is? I'm assuming it's a brown marmorated stink bug?
Posted: Feb 6, 2017, 7:31 PM
Anyone in Madisonville needs to take cover NOW!Confirmed wedge tornado bearing down on that part of Louisiana!
Posted: Feb 7, 2017, 8:54 AM
Always tip based on the quality of the service. But AT LEAST tip :)
Posted: Feb 9, 2017, 5:48 PM
The hardest part with the Jeep hail guards was getting the rear window guard done. This was because the wiper still has to operate, yet making sure the rear door opens and spare tire / brake light also swings out. So far so good!
Posted: Feb 12, 2017, 12:30 PM
When that feeling of accomplishment comes over you ... Sigh.Outside of any minor adjustments, the hail guards are done and ready for the upcoming chase season. Goes into storage in the meantime!
Posted: Feb 13, 2017, 3:22 PM
Hail guards done. Fits Jeep pretty good. Takes a mere 10 to 15 minutes to take them off. Packed away until April to June time frame :)

Denver ChaserCon bound! In the meantime longing for completion of the new SW Airlines terminal at FLL.Even on slow times, the bar's jammed, and no where to sit (you stand until you sit on your plane). Certainly no where to charge devices, and long lines to piss or sh't :/

Over Gulf of Mexico headed to Denver. Who wants to be on this little island with a tall rum drink, paper umbrella, and a category 5 hurricane bearing down on you?

Picked up the "Storm Assist 2016" DVD at ChaserCon and hands down this has got to be one of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time! The way this has been put together will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Awesome music composition, time lapses, tornado footage that will give you the chills, and aftermath that would make you cry --It's all there!Hats off to @[22012908:2048:Skip Talbot] and his group putting this absolutely incredible documentary together and keep doing in helping raise money for such a good cause!

Okay... Another project to get my Jeep ready to chase. Let's see where I can put this winch and winch plate that just arrived!
Posted: Feb 23, 2017, 1:01 PM
One of the final touches ... Got the 9,500 lb winch installed and working on the Jeep. That feeling of accomplishment is wonderful after pulling off the bumper and getting the winch plate on, then the winch itself. Ready for storm chasing and assistance to anyone needing debris cleared or pulling out of ditches.
Posted: Feb 26, 2017, 12:05 PM
Tornadic supercell headed right for Joliet and I-55 / I-80 area right at rush hour! This storm has a confirmed large and destructive tornado with it - Take cover if your in the path!Yes, that's a debris ball forming on the southern tip of that storm!

Smoking is by far the most revolting and disgusting habit around (outside of doing illegal drugs)...1). Killed my best friend in 2007.2). Killed my mother in 2013.3). No one is comfortable visiting me at my dad's place (because of the "residual" smell)!4). I have permanent allergies growing up in a smoke filled house.I hope smokers kick their habits and LIVE! Clean air for you, me, and our kids.

While contemplating storm chasing some of these early setups ... Once again ... The high cost of airline travel (during Spring Break) might make this a little difficult! This picture I attached shows what it costs to go from Florida to the "not so exotic" destination like Kansas City from say March 10th to the 14th, just for fun, on SW (as well as many other carriers similar) in the left image --Ouch!But take a look at the right image ... YES, Florida to Tokyo (Japan) for the SAME days - literally to fly to the other side of the planet - Is nearly $300 CHEAPER than to some small midwestern city in the central USA (!?!)
Posted: Mar 6, 2017, 7:20 AM
Interesting ... But it would be kinda funny seeing the reaction when someone hangs their clothes on this and activates the fire sprinkler system!

I am absolutely FED UP with links claiming "get a free product" from anyone (at first assuming it's a gift) so they can get free perks and if I'm dumb enough to sign up I have to "committ" to a long term contract!I had that BS a year ago with free movies that turned out to be bogus, and more recently someone saying I got (up to $70) free food with something like "Blue Apron". Yet when I catch the deal as spam and inform the person it's fake, they take it personally! Money and friendships, ESPECIALLY on Facebook, does NOT mix. Wake up and realize that nothing is for free and that there's a fine print for a reason! No free food and no free movies - There just isn't any!Anyone remember those music clubs in the 80s? You know, where you buy a cassette or 8 track for a penny or dollar, then you're locked into a $50+ a month "club" for at least a year? Don't get scrooged (or unintentionally un-friended) - Think!

Tornado warned storm passing Pompano Beach, Florida... Most likely rain wrapped.
Posted: Mar 13, 2017, 10:38 PM
Less restrictive cold air intake (K&N type filter) done on Jeep. This should add 2 to 3 MPG and you could feel a gain in power and response right off the bat.

Supercell storm just west of Amarillo, TX :)

Chaser advice ... STAY the F'CK OUT of Dallas!!!!They close the interstates at night and you sit for an hour with a rolling roadblock on 35 E :(

Heading up to Oklahoma City area to get into position for tomorrow's setup. But first I'll stop and get some ribs off I-35!

Sky over Chickasha, Oklahoma. This is the pre-storm elevated convection from upper wave lead impulse. Small hail falling to pea sized. A sign of things to come later.

Currently just west of Davis, OK with cumulus turkey towers struggling against weakening cap. Won't be too long now.

Tuesday March 28 was a chase day with frustration and excitement as I was able to work my way from the failed target area near Matador (Texas) southward to Haskell County for a beautiful stovepipe tornado! That aside, what caused MOST of today's frustration was hearing that storm chasers were killed in their line of work (due to a car accident). I've never intercepted a tornado while both laughing and crying at the same time. God bless those who lost their lives. Good night.
Posted: Mar 28, 2017, 11:49 PM
This "appetizer" chase trip from March 23rd through the 30th is just about completed with some severe storms (including this low topped LP supercell) observed in the Arklatex area on the 29th.Always keep our fallen comrades in our hearts regardless. I almost wanted to not chase today, but I did. That's what those 3 (Corbin , Kelly and Randy) would have done and wanted. Good night and God bless.

I should say that I was "going downhill quite FAST"!
Posted: Apr 1, 2017, 9:44 AM
Tornadic supercell with debris ball is just west of Woodworth, LA and headed towards Alexandria! This is serious ... Take cover if you're in the path of this storm!!!
Posted: Apr 2, 2017, 12:06 PM
It's NOT over guys ... Another prominent debris signiture passing west of Jena, Louisiana. This time there ARE more big chasers on it - Including @[1639197394:2048:Jeff Piotrowski]!
Posted: Apr 2, 2017, 2:15 PM
The focus should NOT be only on the HP storm (circled in blue) ... IF I was chasing this event, I would try to focus on the more discrete storms popping up to the south ... Those are what you should be chasing!I am not liking the SW winds though (instead of S or SE) in that region.
Posted: Apr 5, 2017, 1:38 PM
Probably the "Storm o' the Day" shaping up in east central Alabama well west of the Georgia-junkfest near I-20. Whoever stayed put to the west chose wisely (had I gone this area would have been my main target)!
Posted: Apr 5, 2017, 2:01 PM
This cell is just about to cross the AL / GA border near Ranburne and will be taking aim on Atlanta in about 30 minutes from now. This is very bad (let's hope it's just hail when it reaches the population areas in NW Georgia).
Posted: Apr 5, 2017, 2:45 PM
Guys ... Be careful out there!
Posted: Apr 5, 2017, 3:01 PM
The powerful supercell taking aim on the Atlanta area looks like it went HP and has weakened quite a bit into a line segment. But till don't let your guard down until it passes.A tornado WAS reported, but not from that storm, but one farther southwest earlier (circled) by Jenni Hughes, who looked like the only chaser on it!

Thoughts on today's (4/5) high risk with AM storms and veered (SW) flow...

So what's scarier ... Skydiving or seeing THIS on the hangar floor at the skydive place?Anyone know what kind of spider this is?
Posted: Apr 8, 2017, 12:47 PM
Ok guys ... I hear a lot of talk on comparing today's low end slight risk to April 9, 2011 in Iowa ... So let's pull the SPC outlook from the archives for "20110409" for let's say 1630z......Humm, now THAT DAY I would have definitely chased if I was not working. Today is a little bit less "ominous" :/

In position for tomorrow's enhanced risk. Meanwhile looking at some LP leftovers before elevated hailers develop later farther north.

Posted: Apr 27, 2017, 10:49 AM
Woke up this morning to THIS as per SPC 13z......I'm not sure what happened, and I'm also sure about 200 other chasers near me (the "X") are also wondering what happened. This is why you DON'T HYPE stuff a week in advance. Good luck to anyone near S IL or W Kentucky today with your chain saws. OR ... Maybe the 2% around most of us won't be anything to laugh about later?

Tail end supercell near Odell, Texas.

Mean looking mesocyclone near Tulsa earlier today (May 11). It's a shame it kept getting undercut by outflow (70+ MPH winds and hail exceeding 2" in there). My Jeep's hood looks, well, a bit different :)

When truck drivers just DON'T CARE?This is the same BS @[1441644905:2048:Eric Treece] posted before. Why do they do this? Do they even care when they finally go back to the right and see dozens left finally "freed to go" flipping them off to their left?

No tornadoes today ... And for quite a WHILE (unfortunately).Like a dead hurricane season ... Let's rub it in with anniversary posts!

Headed back out to chase soon. Flew back to Chicago from Florida this morning. Nice overshooting top at high altitude over north central Florida.

Long but interesting chase day on June 13 (Left North Platte, NE in the morning targeting east-central to SE SD by late afternoon ). Storms went up but we're HP supercells with a brief tornado observed southwest of Mitchell.Later in the day the storms lined out as expected, but not before this incredible view (of a hail core) southeast of Yankton, SD in NE Nebraska off SR 37! Those colors are real! This storm packed quarter sized hail and winds gusting near 80 mph, downing a tree and pieces off that tree slamming into my vehicle. The MCS caused frustration as my hotel that I booked online didn't have power in Sioux City. This is the fourth time in 2017 I lost a hotel reservation / couldn't check in because power was out. Anyone else had that issue tonight?

Whoever designed a bathroom like this (with a 3-4" step up) was either drunk or a complete moron.Perfectly designed to stub toes and even cause a dangerous fall (from tripping). Note the dents already in the step - probably from other broken toes...Vif!!!! ... "wait for it..." (signal reaches brain) "---OOOOUUUCCCHH!!!!"

Welcome to the ConeZone!Let's unsolicitedly just close a major highway and 'surprise' some folks :)

Pretty crazy chase day. Started out with the initiating supercells in east central Nebraska, rain wrapped tornado near Madison. Then watched two LP splits produce a funnel near Lincoln and get gobbled up by this massive MCS / progressive derecho! Powerlines fall down near Beatrice. Lightning so insane and the most frequent I ever seen in my life. Followed the MCS to north central Kansas! Whew!

With (false) hope the strong cap would break and take advantaged of the backed surface flow and better upper level support to the north - I rolled the dice and got a mild sunburn. One last nail (cap bust) in the coffin for chase 2017. Not a happy way to end the season (here in far NW Iowa) :(

Eating here at local bar in Chicago. Some folks have drinks and leave a tip. Out of towners kinda cheap?I ordered a $20 drink and left $5 ... Jeez.

Finished storm chasing for the Spring season 2017. Passing through Chicago now. In the midst of a 2,000+ mile drive back home to south Florida. Where on earth do I get the time (and patience) to drive 20,000+ miles (in a mere 2 months time) and cover 21 states? As Tim Samaras (RIP) would say - Driven by PASSION.

I saw 3 (yes THREE) people in this long line (waiting to pay for parking) get a parking ticket......Simply because they didn't have the payment from the pay machine ON their dashboard WHILE they were in this line.Where did human "common sense" go?

What's good about living in south Florida is that it's never hard to find your gate at any airport if you're flying there!

Looking at a cluster of storms east of Florida from an airplane at 39,000 feet. These are associated with tropical storm (now a depression) Emily interacting with a low pressure trough. The towering cumulonimbus in the image center is approaching 60,000 feet.

Once again ... As we enter August, it appears the hurricane season will be quite dry and quiet (for now at least)!"How dry I am, how dry I am. It's plain to see just why I am. No alcohol in my highball. And that is why so dry I am. Waiter, Waiter."
Posted: Aug 2, 2017, 8:12 AM
As people like iCyclone and Timmer score left and right with tropical systems - I'm sitting here preparing for ???? In the USA. Spending time at my dad's place and he pulls up in a bad mood, I say hi, silence and he murmurs how sick and tired he is working on my Jeep and cargo rack (for fuel cans). And for what?He asks me to leave, and now I'm looking for cheap apartments. My mom was proud of my chasing - But cigarettes and cancer ripped her from my life.Should I continue working on my vehicle for chasing? Or just move to Taiwan or something? Take the Atlantic (since 2006) and shove it...

Right now my eclipse "chase" appears to be heading to the NW side of Atlanta by Sunday afternoon. No problem booking any hotel there. Then on the 21st head north to the southern Appalachians in either Tennessee or Kentucky. Cloud cover may be an issue farther NW into places like S Illinois. Totality will be around 2:35 in my area. This is still flexible and subject to change. The picture is from the 2012 annular eclipse in New Mexico just before total annularity. This one will be a total eclipse (not annular) where the moon is closer and sun completely covered.
Posted: Aug 17, 2017, 10:05 AM
Heading north and in northern Atlanta for the night. Tomorrow is the eclipse to the northwest most likely in Tennessee. Heading there tomorrow!Meanwhile I spot possible waterspouts far to my east while passing through Fort Pierce. Enough to get quick cell shot from overpass (sorry for the blur).

Posted: Aug 21, 2017, 1:21 PM
Avoid some areas on 75 south out of Atlanta and near Macon. And it's NOT post eclipse related traffic. They're shoving 3 lanes into one in areas 10 miles apart (20-30 min delay per segment). All construction related.

Magical!
Posted: Aug 21, 2017, 10:35 PM
Sitting here in Aransas Pass and may adjust northward a bit to near Rockport if necessary. First contact with main eyewall is less than 30 miles away (~3 hours). This will be the first major hurricane to hit the USA in almost 12 years.

In eye now. Dead calm. Stars and milky way visible at times overhead with birds flying.

Passing through Houston and see this tornado warned TCMS (tropical cyclone mini-supercell) hanging near the city.
Posted: Aug 26, 2017, 2:53 PM
Green does NOT mean "go" in this case. This is the road to Houston Hobby Airport. Radar estimates of 42 inches of rain is just rediculous. Looks like I'll be here for the next few days :)
Posted: Aug 27, 2017, 7:41 AM
Looks like I'm stuck here until at least Wednesday. This flooding here is catastrophic and these pictures don't do it any justice because I'm in an area that is not "normally prone" to flooding. But this storm is NOT "normal" :/
Posted: Aug 27, 2017, 10:12 AM
Terrifying rushing water across Shepherd Drive with swollen streams and rivers west of Houston this evening. This was like class 5 rapids at times.
Posted: Aug 27, 2017, 11:09 PM
I'm evacuating to Dallas. The rain is bad again and I'm on my way up there to fly out of Dallas tomorrow morning. Houston is a VERY bad place to be in right now.
Posted: Aug 28, 2017, 2:09 PM
I'm safely evacuated to Dallas. Returning car there and flying out of there 8/29 in the morning. Water was rising again leaving Houston earlier so I decided to leave this evening (8/28).This was water literally spilling over the median barrier from left (southbound) to right (my northbound) lanes of I-45 north of Houston near Spring, Texas. Note to the left the water is over topping the median wall and jetting through the cracks.

Safely back in south Florida after chasing Harvey. Got a brief glimpse of the disorganized center of Harvey passing north of it en-route from Dallas to Fort Lauderdale (Florida) on a bumpy flight.

Panicking people already buying water and canned goods here in South Florida. Hype or not, wherever Irma hits at it's maximum intensity, it will be like a bomb hitting.
Posted: Sep 4, 2017, 8:47 PM
This is true hurricane perfection ... Irma at category 5 strength with sustained winds of 175 MPH with 220+ MPH gusts. Basically like an EF-5 tornado (a big one) if it hits the British Virgin Islands like this.If this continues to Florida like this it would make Andrew in 1992 look like a big fart. That buzz saw appearance is insane. Found a few parking garages in Key West too (if it comes to that).
Posted: Sep 5, 2017, 7:13 AM
Imagine what these people in the British Virgin Islands are dealing with now...
Posted: Sep 6, 2017, 9:16 AM
Just a tip and a word of caution. Social media can be very misleading - Especially with FB loading old or shuffling posts around.Be sure to double check and make sure posts are from.a reputable source and most importantly not "stale" (from days ago)! The threat from Irma is changing by the minute and many are panicking over an event that's still days away and may or may not happen in a given area! Make sure your information is the LATEST!
Posted: Sep 6, 2017, 9:45 AM
Eye shrinking... looks like an eyewall replacement cycle is beginning.
Posted: Sep 6, 2017, 3:30 PM
Just a word to the wise ... I'm basically ignoring any new friend requests like this. Yet I see many chasers I know on their friend lists ... Who are these people?I mean look the the profile FIRST before you accept SPAM AS friends. Doesn't take a rocket scientist seeing a fake make computer generated name with a woman in the pic!!!!Be careful with these spambots!

I don't think staying here (FL Keys) is a good idea during Irma. I hope he's just sight seeing?
Posted: Sep 8, 2017, 5:35 AM
First view of Irma herself as her margin creeps over the horizon looking ESE from South Florida.
Posted: Sep 8, 2017, 2:47 PM
Eye of Irma stalled and poised to start moving NNW off Cuban coast. Check out the double eyewall over water and with the night time diurnal max for intensification.I opted NOT to chase in Key West (for safety) and I'm currently holding position in the Naples area with north and south options to Fort Meyers or Marco Island, respectively.

Boarding plane in about an hour. So glad I ditched tomorrow's late day flight. Seeing the track and intensity forecast is a bit unnerving for me. This is not a "beachfront resort" hurricane. This is parking garage stuff. Sometimes I question my sanity.

Good night from San Juan. Tense front staff checking me in. And they have every right to be tense. I'm in cozy room on 5th floor. Not far (couple blocks) from the beach. Long flight and happy to get my rental car with full insurance and fuel options. Tomorrow I'll spec out few places. Right now getting much needed rest.
Posted: Sep 18, 2017, 11:27 PM
Checking some places out near Huracao. Coastal view basically into a gun barrel. Might back off to San Juan. This storm is too dangerous to chase. Pressure still falling and 175 mph after daybreak not sounding fun.

If you gonna get stuck somewhere ... Get stuck on a Caribbean island after a hurricane and drink some rum... Really!
Posted: Sep 21, 2017, 6:52 PM
Pretty much stuck here travel wise after some false hope yesterday thinking I was getting out on the 24th, and it was cancelled minutes after booking it.First of all, I'm in good shape here. I'm in a hotel with power, food, water, and such. And with a few great storm chasers who were nice enough to let me stay with them.Pretty much trying anything now to get back to Miami. American cancelled flights through the 27th yet @[1097081336:2048:Mike Theiss] made it back to Miami last night on American (???) ... So obviously things are weird.I got a flight back to Miami for the 25th, via a puddle jumper out of San Juan to St Thomas. If that goes, it's American from there to Charlotte then Miami. In the meantime I'll keep checking the airport for any unscheduled or standby flights. Meanwhile we have a room with Ocean view...

What is this? A pretty rock? A gemstone?Noh. It's a chunk of 3/4 inch plate glass that blew off parts of the hotel here in Puerto Rico during hurricane Maria.
Posted: Sep 23, 2017, 6:31 AM
I am in New York now. After leaving San Juan PR on a humanitarian flight. Tomorrow I'm Florida bound. Almost feel guilty. In this picture, looking eastward, hurricane Maria rears her ugly head over the horizon while flying over the NE Bahamas. The dark band of clouds is called the "bar" by hurricane hunters.
Posted: Sep 24, 2017, 7:02 PM
Hopefully THIS is the last we'll see of Maria, unraveling off the eastern USA!I'm safely back in South Florida :)
Posted: Sep 25, 2017, 2:44 PM
Currently working on my updates and chase logs for hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. I returned to the mainland USA on the 24th. The road to a long recovery starts.

While everyone focuses on drowning and wind damage ... The real dangers are the diseases lurking in the afternath.Last week I had a high fever and "one day" cold. Thinking that was the end of it right? Wrong.Found out today - after a week-long sore throat akin to swallowing a knife every time I swallowed - I was diagnosed with a pretty serious bacterial infection. I'm on antibiotics now.The culprit most likely the filth, raw sewage, and spray from Maria in Puerto Rico. Just a word to the wise. Be careful out there.

I got a little bored getting over a cold and made this handy little gadget. Using two end caps from 2 disposed tubes of toothpaste...Anyone ever had those empty "travel size" toothpastes and wanted to somehow "refill" them before a trip?...Well I took two end caps, drilled a hole through them, and put them end to end, sealing them in epoxy. Since most toothpastes have similar thread on the end caps!Heres how it works...1). Place one end on full (usually larger) tube of toothpaste. Tighten.2. Place the other end to the empty one you want to fill. Tighten.3. Squeeze the full tube so it fills the empty one.4. Remove and recap. No mess!

A much warmer version of a similar process to lake effect snow. A persistent band of training and localized showers coming ashore all day in S Florida near Miami. In this case, cool air (50 to 60 deg) is passing over the warmer Gulf Stream current (75 deg or so). Differential heating at its finest.

As you can see, I whittled down the last of my (untrue) cyber friends on here (no, not the cute lady sending me a request last week).Messaged many friends around new year with friendly "happy new year" or even birthday / holiday wishes. Some on here, some text or email. The real drop of the hammer was when most didn't respond (not even a lousey "thx") I just repeated the same message, once a day, UNTIL I got a reply. If I FINALLY got a bad response (like "don't ever msg me again"), those were unfriended, along with ones who never responded after 15 messages.Call it harassment, yeah, but if that's what it takes, so be it...

Crazy coastal / oceanic storm to form just off the NE USA over the weekend. Winds to hurricane forced gusts (not a tropical system = extratropical mid latitude cyclone). Check out that wind gradient (71 knot gusts off Cape Cod and less than 5 knots to the south) on the NAM fcst! Imagine being in a fishing boat in calm conditions then minutes later you're in 75 MPH winds and 40 foot seas?

Rapidly increasing surf here in the Florida east (Palm Beach) coast. Large waves will better the area, especially at high tide, despite the local weather being pleasant and otherwise a perfect beach day. Bomb cyclone continues well off of NE USA in the NW Atlantic.

IOTA ... 3 years ago today (4/9/2015) a violent tornado passed through Ogle county in northern Illinois passing by Rochelle and hitting Fairdale destroying the town and causing 2 deaths. In the image, looking north on Highway 251 in Rochelle, the supercell looks more like a storm in western Kansas, with amazing structure and the EF 4 wedge churning under it. The inset to the upper left is the dark ground scar taken a few days after from a PAC 750 skydive plane over-flying the area.

OMFG ... Haven't bit my nails in months but personal life and stresses with family started me again. This will be the last time. Ingrown nails are second in agony to some Iraqi torture methods. Let alone double ingrown nails. Ouch ouch ouch!Hurts so bad - As if by finger was hit with a hammer.I feel bad as someone just made a negative remark a couple weeks ago saying "some 'unemployed guy' who bites his nails" reminded him of me. Lovely.

Even from a family member now.If you cannot accept what I enjoy and start calling me 'stupid' or 'crazy' to the point you don't want to follow me - Then DON'T.Again ... If you see this message, you weren't "unfriended".And here's a picture you can go off on me about being a "crazy suicidal manic".Get a life ... I GOT mine.

Those hail guards sure came into good use on May 1 northeast of Hoisington KS on the earlier stages of the same supercell that neared Tescott later on. Looks like a GOOD SAVE for the windshield as one such "impactor" (3+ inches) dented the grill itself! Sure beats glass in my eyes and mouth!

A traffic jam almost a mile long causes by dozens of cars and trucks under an overpass! This is not only down right foolish, but the entire lanes on both sides were BLOCKED because of this! That's the long awaited enhanced risk everyone is talking about?Well screw that. I was planning on N/C South Dakota as a target area. Good luck to those who drove 1000 miles overnight and are chasing in central Canada :(Basically lack of data (if I'm in Canada) ... And north of I 80 = Hotels being $100 a night (instead of $50) and gas being $3 a gallon (oh and NOW $3.10 for credit) has me too discouraged.Time to go home...

Like @[1039237590:2048:Jack Corso] would say. The BOYZ stand 60,000 feet tall and proud and a mighty jet airliner is something they giggle at!This probably was the storm that produced the tornado in Rantoul, IL late in the day (June 26), or part of it.

I guess I should say I'm finished with active storm chasing operations in the central USA for the season (I was Chicago based and chasing setups when I was available from late April to June 25). So outside of quick chases, maybe Hawaii, and hurricane chasing, I'll be back to Florida by July 9. I thank my friends and temp job in Chicago as well for putting me up there!

Awesome time at the CSC Independence Skydiving event today and wishing everyone a happy and safe July 4th!The image is spherical (360 VR imagery) after exiting a Pitts Special aerobatic plane inverted over Rochelle, Illinois, and passing through a hole in the towering cumulus clouds. Cant tell which way is up or down? At that point it doesn't matter. Gravity and physics will do its job!
Posted: Jul 4, 2018, 7:10 PM
Headed out of Chicago a few days ago I was stuck in this mess for hours with traffic blocked and closed (Sat July 7). This is absolutely ridiculous because it's just people angered by Trump and his actions (protest over child & parent separation at borders).I was delayed but I'm sure more people missed things like flights or even worse medical or fire emergencies because of the interstate being blocked. Just more "solve nothing icing" on a very bitter cake.

While the talk of the town (weather wise) is near the Missouri Bootheel and Arksnsas areas ... People in north-central Illinois should pay attention to possible rotating storms near the warm front later this afternoon. The HRRR paints a decent supercell near the Rockford / Rochelle, IL area on a few runs. It's a 2% SPC tornado area and its 2018.

Well look at that ... NOAA Buoy 51002, 250 nm SW of the Big Island of Hawaii, is inside the nearly calm eye of category-4 hurricane Lane (less than 2 knots of wind and a pressure bottomed out near 28.25") ... Amazing.
Posted: Aug 23, 2018, 2:02 PM
Cool meteogram plot of winds and sea level pressure from NOAA Buoy 51002 yesterday that took the eye passage of hurricane Lane (about 250 nm SW of Hawaii's Big Island). Although they were saying 130 MPH sustained winds at the time, a peak gust around 94 knots (105 mph or so) on the front of the storm has me wondering. Interesting plot though.

Decided to just head home after what I thought was going to be an awesome Dolphins football game. It started out well, then the rains came. No big deal, right? WRONG!With this day and age and insurance and lawsuits running rampant ... Football now decided to do what airports do - Suspend game activity at the slightest hint of lightning within a 5 mile radius of the stadium. Ofcourse, in south Florida (especially during the summer) ... This can be somewhat of a problem. The first delay was almost 2 hours, the second hour of which was spent baking in 95 deg heat and direct sunlight. The lightning was 5 miles away, so that was what mattered. This first delay was called 10 minutes after a rogue bolt lit up the sky (a bit late on that?)......Playing resumed, and after a few great plays there it was again - The dreaded anvil blowoff from a storm 5 to 10 miles away. And the call to suspend play again (with the fans all yelling "uhhhhgggh" in unison like at an American Airlines gate in NYC La Guardia airport over a cancelled flight, no hotel offered, and no meal voucher).Just said screw it and left ... 5 minutes ago (and hours after leaving), I see the game still on hold, and a big red MCS creeping and training over where the stadium is. I guess I'll treat a football game the same way a flight on American Airlines to NY La Guardia airport or skydiving = Any rain of weather = DONT BOTHER !!!!!At least the anthem and the game itself (picture) was good. And - Most importantly - The Miami Dolphins WON!

Besides a potentially catastrophic hurricane threatening the eastern USA (that I'll be chasing)......Let's NOT forget what happened on Sept 11, 2001.I was in New York city a few days before the attacks. Have this mug I got as a souvenir.

We are pretty much the only ones at this hotel here. Let's see if Florence is not going to weaken too much before moving into this area late tomorrow night into early Friday. The storm appears to be expanding (like an ice skater extending her arms) which may lower the wind speeds, but make for a much larger storm. ... We'll see...

By mid October I will be over this. Sorry. But I lost my mom on Sept 12, 2013 (oh my, that God aweful year (after El Reno at 6 PM in OK going forward). This time it was simple shopping for some stuff. And saw rubbing alcohol. Then reminded me of an absolutely wonderful thing my mom did back in the 80s when I was a kid and sick with the flu.She rubs me down reducing my 106 fever. Singing to me. Massaging my forehead. And I felt better within minutes. If you have a mom = thank her. I was so close to her until both cancer (and all the bad luck in 2013 after May 31) ripped her from my life. No one will ever replace her.Walked out of Walmart with tears rolling down my face. Running to car so no one sees a 49 year old crying like a baby. F'cking sucks.

En route to Florida Panhandle (Staying in Tallahassee tonight) for starters.Passing Orlando now. Utility trucks also headed that way. Possible major hurricane making landfall tomorrow mid day. Gonna be interesting.

Hard to imagine by looking at the sky here in the western side of Tallahassee ... In 24 hours its gonna look a little, well, kinda 'different' ;)Primary target set to Panama City and a bit east of there early tomorrow morning.

Primary target area of Panama City, FL reached. I can imagine its gonna get bad here after lunch ... Should I bring an umbrella?
Posted: Oct 10, 2018, 5:01 AM
Letting everyone know I'm OK. Got calm eye of Michael earlier. Waiting for second half to wind down. Brief shot of eye and sun earlier with stadium effect. Un f'ckg real!
Posted: Oct 10, 2018, 12:00 PM
Currently working my way away from ground zero in the Florida Panhandle. High category hurricanes like Michael produce damage similar to a tornado - Just across a much larger area.
Posted: Oct 11, 2018, 7:48 AM
I was hoping to fly over the Panama City area (in this picture that area would be just right of the center along the top horizon) but we were too far south (en route to Dallas). This view, looking NNW 38,000 feet over the Gulf of Mexico, the cold "wake" of hurricane Michael causes subtle affects in the low level clouds - Nearly absent over the colder (upwelled) water in the wake of the hurricane. To the lower right side and bottom, the clouds denote warmer water outside the cold wake.

Got a chuckle seeing this in a pho (Vietnamese soup) restaurant during lunch out here in California. Yes ... In some other countries (esp SE Asia) people "squat" and don't "sit" on commodes built lower or into the floor (Turkish toilets). But on a "sit down" (Western) toilet, some folks are trying to stand on the rims and squat, causing a dangerous slip and fall risk ... Or the bowl / floor can also be "soiled" by those with poor aim.

Interesting sight off I 15 near the California / Nevada border is what looks like 3 giant light bulbs ... This is the Ivanpah Solar Generating station. Thousands of mirrors focus sunlight on each of 3 central receivers - Heating them nearly white hot. This creates steam to create a turbine.Unfortunately this seemingly "green and renewable" energy station has been known to instantly fry birds in mid air if they fly into the concentrated sunlight! More subtle the used land is endangering desert tortoises.

Down here in south Florida the roaches (like the Florida wood roach here) are huge (nearly 2 inches for this one) ... They are also called palmetto bugs (Eurycotis floridana). They can spray a foul smelling substance up to 3 feet when threatened, so I just decided to leave this one on the outside wall alone :)

After nearly 2 months off of FB ... I'm back for the new year of 2019.Wishing everyone a happy and safe new year 2019.The picture is some lightning illuminated severe storms off the FL west coast back in mid December during a connecting flight from Texas to S Florida.

Strong streaking of the high clouds over Palm Beach County in Florida as a powerful jet stream prevails at 175+ MPH overhead and to my north.Waiting on high clouds to rapidly push away as the moon rises higher into the sky and will move into the earth's shadow prior to midnight on the US east coast.

Interesting meso low streaming off Lake Superior. Most likely a polar low (PL). Akin to their tropical cousins (tropical cyclones) they are smaller but form when extremely cold air passes over "relatively" warmer waters. In some cases they develop an eye like feature - Very interesting indeed!https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_low

Oh my God I had such a laugh today screwng with one of those "lower your interest rate" fake / robo-calls. Instead of just hanging up, I just connected and kept them on the line! For 20 minutes!!! Giving my birthday with the day swapped, fake expiration date, replacing each number in my 16 digit credit card number with a "1" or "9", fake SS number, just playing along and wasting the Hindu (Indian) guy's 20+ minutes. Damn next time I'll record this and post it!!!Alas, after 20+ minutes, he says "You sure that's your CC number?" few times and I say "Oh, yeah, it sure is!" ... Then the India guy says "Go f'ck yourself and shove that card up your ass!" --Click!!! (...Dial Tone...)

Now since I'm basically UPWIND of the Central USA and Plains I need to keep an eye on the skies in California. Ofcourse no chasing there, but a trough (altocumulus castellanus) passing overhead there can denote severe weather east of the Rockies a few days later!

Why when I see people "indoor skydiving" in a 130 MPH vertical wind tunnel running around 1,600 HP I think of a "supercell updraft"?Wait ... More like 200 MPH and 1,600 Billion HP.

Not to be a worry wart but some GFS models flipping between trough and ridging around April 30 through May 8 - Basically the ONLY week I cannot chase this year (Apr 29 to May 7) with painful doctor / dentist appointments in S Florida that week amongst other unchangeable tasks. OR ... bump a bit north (I'm west of Wichita Falls TX now) and target this area in W / Central Oklahoma?Looks quite interesting if air can recover (HRRR showing this on multiple runs). I think I'll just hang around Oklahoma... I just got that "feeling" :)

Currently in the Moab desert area crossing Utah en route for southern California. But I'm thinking hurricanes (what? Not out here!) ... Maybe fly to gulf coast out of Las Vegas or LA for Barry this weekend. Well see ... In the meantime enjoy the view!
Posted: Jul 10, 2019, 1:21 PM
Wait, there's no bridge out to the Chandelur Islands off Louisiana! I guess it's nice for this storm spotter to have a boat and get some fishing in before soon to be Barry moved through!
Posted: Jul 11, 2019, 5:55 AM
Looking at the visible satellite of strong tropical storm Barry nearing landfall (early Saturday) this Friday (7/12) afternoon. The storm lacks any deep convection near the so called "exposed" center as northerly wind shear and dry air pushes the thunderstorms (circled) hundreds of miles south if the center (the "X"). The low clouds mark the circulation of the storm, but this is pretty much the strongest it will get (at or just below a minimal hurricane) wind wise. Had the shear been absent, this would undoubtedly been a major hurricane and of course I would be there. But it's not, so I'm not either! ✂️✂️✂️
Posted: Jul 12, 2019, 1:05 PM
Barry finally becomes the first hurricane of the Atlantic season RIGHT WHEN it is on the Louisiana coast with 75 mph winds. It wont remain a hurricane for long though since the storm is now over land.Plus based on the radar presentation, you would never imagine this is even such. The hurricane forced wind gusts are confined to a small area near the coast and right of the center.

WHY did FB remove the ability to choose from a gallery when posting a picture? They had that ability and removed it. WTF?I'm so damn frustrated. On messenger they removed the choose gallery option too. I understand you need to piss off the MSNBC / CNN freaks / Trump "bashers", but come on!!!

Oh that damn "line" (border) ey? You can see the hate of the human race from space! The crazy Americans who shouldn't own guns. And a president with his head up his ass all the while (comment 'all you want' as I rant)!God bless everyone. We will NEED IT.(Picture taken last year in a flight from LA to Florida overlying the US / Mexican border at high altitude. Look closely, how many cartels can YOU spot? How about some "dreamers" that will build your next home? Yeah. Alot. I know right?)

Gentlemen ... Spotters or not. This type of report is NOT severe weather! Also look about 25 miles to the SE of this person, a tornado hook and no one on it = Now if you were there I'm sure your spotter report would be more worth it.

I guess it's better early than never as an active storm (Dorian) is in the Atlantic basin nearing the Mona passage between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. This will be crucial on how it may effect FL (if at all) during the late weekend. I extended my stay here just in case (leaving next week instead of this week). Also, note that water shelves at the Walmart here in S Florida are already empty!

Cool rainbows looking east over southern Palm Beach County, FL as weather is quite nice west of Dorian.
Posted: Aug 31, 2019, 4:36 PM
The edge of catastrophic hurricane Dorian can be seen offshore of Boynton Inlet in Palm Beach, Florida as it's probably destroying Abaco 200 miles to the east. The reason why there are no waves is due to the blocking effects of the Bahama wave shadow. The folks in the Bahamas, as well as chasers there, need prayers.

Cool spider crawling for the past few days at my hotel bathroom in Denver. Guess I have a new friend here to take care of any ants.

When you are visiting a gas station near the Palmer Divide In Colorado at 6,000 feet MSL. They sell oxygen just like beer and cigarettes!

You know the rude attitude of some people never ceases to amaze me. My New Years resolution is not taking any crap from anyone pulling their negative attitude over me, and just yelling and screaming at them, telling them what they did wrong, until the 10th time they tell me to back-off. No more mister "too nice" guy.

Flying never gets old. From high above it all looks like a big happy earth - Sigh :)

Getting sick of this shit. I'm only down there (FLL) for 3 days next week. Never seen rental cars like this. Gouging at its finest.

Chasercon ice-breaker dinner at Famous Dave's BBQ restaurant near Stapleton. It's going to be a busy day most of tomorrow. Nice to see the storm chasers who made it out!

Ready for the 22nd annual storm chaser convention (ChaserCon) here east of Denver.

Beautiful sunset here at Chasercon!

Just want to thank host Roger Hill and everyone who attended the "last ChaserCon" in Denver this year after 22 wonderful years of this magnificent storm chaser event! Enough for a standing ovation to Roger and his wife Carolyn. Well done!

Nearly a 60 degree temperature drop here in the Denver area in less than 24 hours. That's one heck of a cold front for you! Temperatures on Sunday were in the upper 70s, Today, in the upper teens with snow. That's the extremes of western weather!

As @[1039237590:2048:Jack Corso] would say, the "white invaderz" are tormenting the Denver area behind winter storm "Kade" :)

High above the snow storm in Denver ... Moon illuminates the clouds tops (photo un-retouched).

Street lights? Check out how bad light pollution could be, especially when you have a low cloud deck overhead and snow reflecting back all the city / street lighting. Centennial, CO at about 11 PM. Looks almost like daylight.

Daily funny: Went to a pet shop looking at baby parrot. Guy told me he can speak a few words already ($650). Told him "no thanks" = I already had a spelling bee at home.

One of those nights that can KILL someone (with a bad heart). Dashcam not working. Ok no big deal, just put another micro SD in it, right? No - Remember your $400 cassette deck eating tapes in 1989? Not the "tape", the SD card is fine. Dashcam needs to be replaced. In the process of TRYING to reformat the SD card (in adapter in my laptop), which took forever, it failed and somehow ruined the SD reader. F'cking lovely. Now the laptop card reader is ruined.Apparently the dashcam did something to both micro SD cards I put in it, and ruined them, and attempting to put them in the card reader in my $2k laptop fried that port!Like the 1989 $400 cassette deck ruining tapes so they also ruin other tape decks you put them in - In this case I have no mullet to tear out :/

Six Flags? No it's just the stock market :)Whoooo hoo!G Force: ...At higher accelerations, tunnel vision, then blackout occurs...

All good things come to an end. Beyond words about the stock market and covid-19. 12 people laid off thanks to a sudden merger where Etrade was bought by Morgan Stanley. Now is the time for all of us to stick together and put anger, and certainly, greed, on the back burner for now.

In the Arizona desert ... No one knows nor hears anything about covid-19 nor the stock market :)

Believe it or not, flying is the cleanest air (filtered 30 times and mixed with air at 40k feet) as long as you wipe down surfaces and not travel if your sick. Going coast to coast last minute (yes that's $113 round trip!) is just sick in itself (price wise)!

Guys ... BAD time to do "this" now ... VERY BAD time :/Beach traffic, jammed restaurants and bars, and NO parking ($25 for valet). And it's a weekday too. Let's celebrate Mardi Gras here too? Lol. Wow. Just wow...
